Sorry I meant the ships would close to 60 feet not 60 yards, so there shouldn't be any range penalty. Too bad about the natural 1, anyone else plan to take a shot? Note you can help Zendara reload if you're not doing anything. Each full round action helping reduces the number of rounds needed by 1 (can fire once every round with enough helpers).

There are two ballistas forwards and aft. Each has two of the special grapple bolts (including magic rope) as well as a dozen regular bolts. If you miss, the rope has to be hauled in (kinda slow and using the command word would be dangerous since the bolt would get yanked back).

As they approached the enemy ship, Edwin touched the ballista he was operating and transferred as small amount of psychic energy to it. Then, at the range that Braenar had recommended, he fired.

Legacy Weapon to give the ballista a +1 enhancement bonus for one minute. Using 1/3 sudden insight uses.

I haven't added Edwin's size bonus for being small — not sure if that would apply. The +7 includes his dex modifier, but maybe that doesn't apply either?

Knowing full well that a fight was about to start Yukarii focused her mind and called forth her other self Yukaari. She was smart enough to know she may need a shield against harm if it came to boarding the other vessel. After that she cast a spell to protect herself mage armor and a spell to watch the condition of her allies and foes deathwatch then hunkered down behind what ever cover she could find just in time for the fight to start.

With its fans off the Dawntreader's motion was silent and the sudden rise smoothed out to a dead stop placing the two airships in close quarters with the Dawntreader a dozen feet lower. So focused were the enemy sailors on their tasks that none of them thought to look down over the rails, which was just as well because Zendara's first time aiming the bulky ballista didn't quite go according to plan.

Up close the weapon made a loud whiip-CRACK noise as the mechanism fired slamming the thumb wide string into the oddly hooked bolt. Aiming was tricky and her short sailed majestically past the bow of the enemy airship with a gently swoosh, hitting naught but air. Aided by Ferian and the others around her, she quickly made ready to shoot the other bolt.

Edwin don't think being small applies to siege weapons, if anything it makes them harder to use RAW which I'm handwaving for now.
Meanwhile Edwin was also battling with the other unwieldy ballista. His aim was a bit better but it kicked more than he expected ruining his aim, so after the crack of the bolt firing it glanced off with a hollow TOOONK leaving a gash in the paint.

By the time her weapon was reloaded Zendara had figured out where the sights where and she started humming a popular marching tune as she took careful aim at a timber that formed part of the hull. She squeezed the trigger leading to the same kick and whiip-CRACK noise followed by the swoosh of the rope and this time a loud hollow THUNK as the bolt bit home!

Yukarii cast several spells in preparation of battle to protect herself and to gain a supernatural understanding of living creature's status between life and death.

@Edwin I'm going to give you the chance to try again before I roll initiative.
@Ferian you can't see the huge ballista they're assembling yet, once the lines are drawn taught (probably during round 1) the ships will be dawn together and you can cast.

With the assistance of Yukarii and Xindyra, Edwin was able to rapidly reload and fire. This time, just like Zendara his aim was true and the bolt thunked deeply into the enemy ships lower castle, leaving the two airships connected by the ropes.

A cry of consternation erupts from the boat followed by the yell of an authoritarian voice, "TO ARMS WE'RE BEING BOARDED!"

Delaying until some at the rear ballista is ready to speak the command word. When he gets a response, he will shout out a count to three, and command his grapple ropes to contract.
Note that he should have already cast Mage Armor and Shield.

Then on his count she uses the command word to coordinate the ship grappling.

She continues to sing free action: inspire courage is still up and rallies her fellows to focus on the enemy lieutenant move action: freebooter's bane grants +1 bonus on weapon attack and damage rolls against the target (stacks with inspire).

EDIT: removing the attack since I didn't notice that saying the command word was a standard action till just now.

Ferian waits for his chance to try disabling the enemy ballista. Perhaps they could convince their foes to stand down if their siege weaponry was disabled.

He's not comfortable sending Zephyr into battle just yet, so Ferian has his heron continue to fly nearby.

I don't think Ferian will need to delay or anything since he's last of the group in initiative, but other than helping reload the ballistae if necessary, he'll wait to cast Warp Wood on the enemy ballista at his first opportunity. DC 16 Will Save.

Yukarii recognized what the enemy lieutenant had just cast and knew he would be serious trouble. She decided to further test his defenses as she focused her thoughts on a sharp burst of never-erring magic and sent a pair of bolts lancing across the space to slam into the enemy mage as she said to those nearby, "Their Lieutenant is a spell caster of some kind."

Yukarii whispers a word of power and a pair of silvery darts pulse out towards the Lieutenant before detonating in puffs of dust flecked with blood. The man bites back a vicious curse!

Hunting bow in hand Prof Dexter takes a look at the Lieutenant sizing him up. She nods grimly before suddenly knocking an arrow, drawing and firing, hitting him in the shoulder!

In unison Edwin and Zendara whisper the command words and an eerie sqqquaAAASh-sqqquaAAASh noise thrums through they suddenly become taught. The ropes strain and sing as they take up many tonnes of load and the two airships start to come together. Slowly at first but they gain speed!

Dr Munroe cracks his fists as his eyes bore into the enemy sailors as he moves to the gunwale in preparation for boarding! He also did something involving martial flexibility.

Xindyra was waiting to help Edwin but there was little to do beyond gawp at the spectacle as the shortening ropes inexorably pulled the two vessels together.

Ferian focuses his energies upon the giant ballista, sending his mind into the fibre of the wood, willing it to run wild and to warp away from the unnaturally straight planed edges. A part of the great torsion arms suddenly buckles and twists, ruining the engine!.
So the ballista counts as huge which is equivalent to 8 small objects. RAW you can't warp all of it at lvl 3. However rule 0 means I'm gonna let this one through, it's not complete yet and you manage to bust a smaller but important part.

The two ships slam together with a sound like the biggest kettle drum and you're rocked on your feet. Technically I should make everyone roll dex checks but there's so many of you and it's late...

Cutlasses in hand the enemy sailors surge forwards, some leaping across to The Dawntreader, hoping to bring the battle to you!

The enemy lieutenant barks a word of power before vanishing!

Yukarii manged to keep her footing when the ships crashed together for boarding and saw the lieutenant disappear. "Their caster is invisible!" Focusing her mind Yukarii thrust it out at the nearest enemy. Her mind touched his and then she began to overload his mind with sensations.

As the ships slammed together, Xindrya was throwing a volatile cocktail she'd mixed together. It landed among the sailors detonating with a dull CRUMP and a gout of flame! Several of the men screamed in pain and surprise.

Had to look at an earlier version of the doc to see where green was standing. They where at the back next to Cyan & Yellow.

Yukarii shouted a warning about the invisible lieutenant before focusing on the mind of the sailor Xindrya's bomb and detonated upon. The air around the man's head started to shimmer and he screamed as blood trickled out of his ears, nose and eyes! The man swayed woozily on his feet and looked set to fall at the slightest provocation.

Grabbing two arrows from her quiver, Professor Dexter shot from the hip at the closest enemy. The first arrow went wide but the second one stuck him deep in the left shoulder causing him to grunt in surprise as he blinked at the arrow fletchings.

A whispered word of power caused Edwin's sabre to instantly frost over and for a chill mist to form around it. With almost casual grace he slashed at the neck of wounded man in front of him, ending him.

Zendara's bow tracked the closest enemy sailor, a man who was retrieving something hidden near the great ballista. He ducked unpredictably and her arrow slammed quivering into the floorboards behind him.

Dr Munroe stepped towards the nearest enemy, batted the man'd saber away with the flat of his hand before trying an experimental punch. The man rocked back but Munroe's other fist caught his head with a glancing blow which left blood trickling from his nose.

Xindrya steps lightly over the corpse felled by Edwin and thrusts at the back of sailor Dr Munroe had just punched. The brightly shining point of her rapier burst through the man's sternum and he gasped and clutched at it feebly before slumping to the floor still twitching.

Ferian concentrated as he intoned the words of a prayer to St. Christopher. With a soundless flash a terrible actinic light erupted amongst the enemy causing them to wail as the light seared their eyes and bodies! Oh wow, thats basically trivialised the combat at a stroke.

The sailors on the boat all produced hand crossbows, at least those not blinded and they both swivelled towards Farian and took aim! With a loud CLACK-CLACK the bow strings slammed into the bolts. The first took Ferian in the shoulder, the second narrowly missed his ear.

The blinded sailor on the enemy ship fumbled with the stopper of a silver hip flask which he downed in one gulp. Some of the sheets of burnt skin hanging off him suddenly went back to normal.

Thank you for your patience, everyone. Also, Zendara, I believe DM Fang had me cast Warp Wood at the start of the fight which he generously allowed to work, so... hopefully war-starting is off the table.

I'm pretty sure it won't be possible, but in the event Ferian can be pretty sure where the enemy lieutenant is standing, he'll cast Faerie Fire on that square.

With several of the enemy blinded, Ferian decides to ignore his wound for the moment and focus on incapacitating more of their opponents.

Backed into a corner, Ferian focuses on the most immediate threat and tries to paralyze the red enemy.

Yukarii moved up a bit and focused her mind on thoughts of magical bolts and the emotions of a successful hit on her opponents. A pair of magical bolts materialized and shot out at the remaining thug on their ship to slam into him with out error.

Yukarii's magical bolts slam into the blinded sailor, dropping him like a sack of potatoes amidst a mine mist of blood from two gaping wounds in his chest.

Professor Dexter swivels to shoot at one of the blinded sailors on the other boat. The man bumps into things in his panic and her first arrow goes wide but the second one takes him in the throat and he falls down gurgling.

Edwin's arms suddenly grow like elastic bands until they're unnaturally long! Reaching over the edge of the ship his frost encrusted rapier bit deeply into the side of a sailor, causing the man to gasps in shock as his blood froze!

Still singing, Zendara takes aim at the man charging her and Ferian. With an arrow nocked, she levels her bow, pulls the string back to her ear and releases. The arrow tears into the man's chest and post halfway out of his back, he sinks to his knees with a look of profound shock on his face.

Xindyra's unstable concoction landed on the sailor and the vial smashed
covering him in a thick syrupy liquid. Nothing seemed to happen and the man sniggered before it suddenly exploded blowing half his clothes off. Fragments smashed painfully into the adjacent man however as fate would have it, most of them missed.

Backed into a corner, Ferian intones the words of a spell as the sneering sailor on the other ship levels a powerful crossbow. The mans eyes suddenly grow wide with fear as his movements suddenly stop as his limbs lock into place!

A disembodied word of command is heard near Xindyra followed by the crackle of invisible lightnings and then the Lieuentant appears, thrusting at Xindyra's exposed side! The rapier wreathed in crackling lightnings slips in under her belly and the charge of lightning sears her innards and discolors her skin!

Rapier with shocking grasp spellstrike: 1d20 + 7 + 3 ⇒ (8) + 7 + 3 = 18Damage: 1d6 + 3 + 3d6 ⇒ (5) + 3 + (6, 6, 3) = 23 <--- HIT due to being denied dexterity.
I assume Xindyra has a chain shirt (it doesn't say on your sheet) so the +3 to hit applies. Xindyra has AC 21 due to the mutagen but +4 of that is dex, so he hit but only just.

With the sudden appearance of the Lieuentant as he stabbed Xindrya and blasted her with magic Yukarii realized he companion needed aid. In order to buy them all some time she called out, "Yukaari! Distract them!" From inside of her burst forth the spectral figure that looked so much like herself. Yukaari was the idealized provocative version of herself that Yukarii kept hidden from the world. A result of her torment when she was younger, and the spectral being quickly approached the Lieuentant as she yelled at him, "If you want to show us how manly you are come and f!&# me you honorless swine!"

The Lieutenant clutched feebly at the arrow and stumbled back onto Edwin's frost encrusted blade which erupted out of his chest next to the arrow. The man stared at the bloodied sword with a look of horror before he slumped to the ground dead.

Zendara's carefully aimed arrow struck the paralyzed enemy crossbow man between the eyes, his head slammed back into the side of the ship and stuck there transfixed by the yard long arrow.

Dr Munroe's fist left an indentation three inches deep as he slammed it into the face of the man in front of him, with the sound of a hammer hitting fresh meat. The man's skull cracked open, dashing the contents on the floor after falling backwards from the blow.

Each sailor has masterwork chain mail, and a masterwork cutlass. There are four potions all the same: DC 16 to ID. The Lieutenant had a masterwork chain shirt and an enchanted rapier: DC 18 to identify. There's also 50g in loose coinage. None of them have any personal effects.

Edwin checked on the downed enemies, trying stabilize their wounds if he could.

Some of the ones Edwin struck took a mix of lethal and non-lethal damage, so most are likely still alive.

After tending to the wounded, he crossed over to the enemy ship and made sure that the ballista was disabled. He returned to the Dawntreader and reported, "They won't be starting a war today."

Zendara moves over to the other ship to make sure that the giant ballista is out of commission for good, echoing the concern of probably everyone else, but she had to see for herself. She checks to see what Red was trying to retrieve beside it, and then begins a search of the enemy ship to make sure they didn't miss anything.

Ferian recognizes one potion is a cure serious wounds. The other three come in identical bottles but he's not quite sure if they're the same. The rapier is a +1 weapon.

I know you said they didn't have personal items, but are there papers or anything else on the ship that help prove what went down here, or do we only have the prisoners? Also, you said earlier that red was trying to retrieve something by the ballista... was that significant, or just battle banter?

Just to add a bit to what Zendara said, if we're not pressed for time, we should probably search the ship thoroughly now, taking 20 if possible. They could have slipped up and left some clue they didn't intend to. I suppose we can let the city's authorities handle matters otherwise, but it would be nice to get something definitive.
