Devil We Know | Ashes of Discovery (Hellknights) | Ashes of Discovery (Desna)

Following the conclusion of the graduation ceremony, Guidance, the Starfinder Society’s compiled intelligence of Starfinder personalities, summons you all to the Lorespire Complex.

As the doors to the Lorespire Complex slide open, a green holographic image of a middle-aged human woman shimmers into view at the center of the room. “Greetings,” it says. “I am Guidance. Please use the cheek swabs in the open receptacle to provide a genetic sample for Starfinder Society identification purposes. If desired, you may place your hand on the glowing panel to receive a subdermal implant further marking you as a member of the Society.”

Devil We Know | Ashes of Discovery (Hellknights) | Ashes of Discovery (Desna)

Please indicate in your introductory post whether or not you accept the subdermal implant.

In a recording booth, a gnome with shock purple hair sits next to a robot clearly done up in a likeness of a gnome, complete with welded on metal spikey ‘hair.’

”Well, it’s happened again, you’ve waisted another perfectly good hour listening to ‘Ship Talk.’
The drone ‘laughs,’ as the gnome continues.
”And even though Triune itself regrets giving Gnomes drift communication technology whenever he hears US say it, this is NPR, New Pact-worlds Radio.”

The Gnome flicks a switch to begin the pre-recorded end-of-show credits as he and his drone take off their recording headphones and disengage from the audio gear.

“Another great episode,” says the gnome.

”Another? That would imply we had a previous good episode!”
The two start laughing
”Fine, another mediocre episode!” the gnome manages to get out between chortles.

Just then, a message appears on the gnome’s comlink.
”Oh, Starfinders want us, was that graduation thing today?”

”Of course it was, I tell ya, you’d loose your head if it wasn’t attached!” the drone chides him.
”What’re you talking about, your the one with the removable head!”
The two gaffaw as they head out of the recording booth and towards the lorespire complex.

When the two get there ZIP will take the implant. Zap will also try and take the implant, but being a drone, he cannot. He will look dismayed.

A pale and gaunt figure quietly enters the room. Although it is not immediately obvious, you quickly realise that he is a half-orc, although it is rare to have encountered one so emaciated. Nor one with skin that is almost ash white. Nonetheless, he carries himself straight and tall. Other than the artillery laser that he carries across his back, what catches your eye is the bright red and orange logo of a sword overlaid a pair of wings emblazoned on the armor of his right chest.

He turns to regard the gnome and the "gnome" briefly but goes up receptacle to deposit his cheek swab and accept the subdermal implant first. He then turns to introduce himself to the gnome in a hoarse and raspy voice.

"Greetings, my name is Hach Grakin, of the Knights of Golarion, newly appointed liaison to the Starfinder Society. You are here for the Commencement ceremony as well?"

The two look at each other before turning back to the half-orc. ”A knight of Golarion huh? How about that?” responds the gnome, a genuine sound of reverence in his voice.

”Well isn’t that something? Don’t get to meet one of them everyday, do you?” the drone chips in.

”And Hach Grakin, what a great name!” the gnome adds, responding to his drone. Then he seemingly remembers the person who started the conversation and turns back to the half-orc. ”Sorry! It’s a pleasure to meet you! I’m Magliozzi Cheetum, but I’m better known as Zip, this is my counterpart Zap, we host a radio show where we give out advice on how to repair vehicles, mostly ships.”

”Actually, after that latest lawsuit I don’t think we can legally call it ‘advice’ anymore!” the drone quips and both start laughing. It takes a second before the gnome sees a slight look of concern on the other Starfinder’s face.

”Oh, he’s just kidding, we’re actually certified ship mechanics, and we give out the best advice we can to keep people safe.”

”Yeah, we just give each other a hard time.”The drone assures the Knight.

The two quickly turn to the new Ysoki to change subject. ”Magliozzi Cheetum, but you can call us Zip and Zap, the Zappit brothers! We run a radio show called ‘Ship Talk,’ about ships, ship repair, and, uh, well that’s about it.”

As you assemble, you may recall some information regarding Absalom Station and recent happenings aboard it.

Culture (DC 5+):

Absalom Station is the cultural hub of the Pact Worlds. Races from every planet in the system, including those once prominent on lost Golarion, can be found on the station.

A result of 10+ allows you to view the spoiler below:

Spoiler:

People around the station are increasingly amenable to Starfinders. They respect both the dogged veteran field agents who were not lost in the Scoured Stars disaster and the new recruits, whose presence brings renewed hope. Stating one’s association with the Starfinder Society is likely to garner support from the locals of Absalom Station.

A result of 15+ allows you to also view the spoiler below:

Spoiler:

A host of starships, known locally as the Armada, orbits Absalom Station. Ships from the Armada are often starships that have taken advantage of the station’s Starstone core—a mystical device that allows for quick travel through the Drift back to Absalom Station. The ships of this fleet are increasingly at risk of bringing back undetected alien life, simply because the policing Stewards lack the numbers to search every orbiting ship.

Likewise, there are also opportunities to ask around, gathering information from the local, in order to learn even more about Absalom Station.

Diplomacy to Gather Information (DC 5+):

Everyone is excited about the upcoming junkrace. Apparently some nobody mouthed off to Ratrod, the reigning junkrace champion. People know that trash talking really gets under Ratrod’s fur and wonder whether there will be more harsh words exchanged before the race.

A result of 10+ allows you to view the spoiler below:

Spoiler:

The latest prerelease song from sugar-pop sensation Strawberry Machine Cake is about to be released. Unlike previous releases, the band is putting out a limited-edition physical copy prior to the concert when the released single and additional tracks are scheduled to debut and become available in digital form.

A result of 15+ also allows you to view the spoiler below:

Spoiler:

Word on the street is that a dangerous alien predator got loose somewhere in the Downlow district of the station. The creature is now contained in a warehouse, but not after it impaled a security officer with a harpoon-like natural projectile.

I believe that you each know the routine from having played this scenario before, so feel free to discuss here, in character, or in the Discussion thread, which faction leader you would like to see first and we will head there on Monday.

After the new Starfinder recruits have had an opportunity to comply with its request, Guidance waits for an apparent lull in the recruits' discussion, but makes no apparent effort to interject.

No response from Elina. Hopefully, she can join us soon. I know the player has GM'd this before, so in the meantime, I see no harm in getting things started.

The artificial intelligence continues, “It is our pleasure to officially welcome you into the Starfinder Society. Today is the commencement of your new role as a Starfinder field agent. It is our tradition, at the end of the graduation ceremony, for new graduates to present themselves to the heads of our most prominent factions and complete a task at those leaders’ behest. This allows the leaders of these groups to become familiar with all new Starfinder agents, and it provides a constant supply of agents for handling situations in our holdings on Absalom Station. While these tasks were formerly symbolic, the heavy loss of Starfinder agents in the Scoured Stars necessitates that these missions become something more. Please treat any tasks given with the gravity you would grant any other Starfinder assignment.”

The indicators on your armor displays, comm links, and datapads all quickly activate noting the arrival of incoming data. Upon review, you see that Guidance has sent information providing an overview of the factions to each of you.

[ooc]Information provided by Guidance, including pictures of the faction leaders, can also be viewed on Slides.

“Once you have completed a faction leader’s desired mission, that leader will signal this unit to indicate the mission is finished.” Guidance explains. “Once all missions are complete, you may return here to the Lorespire Complex to finish your Commencement and prepare for future missions with the Society."

At this point, the PCs can finalize their boon slots for the session and purchase any additional equipment prior to starting the missions. You may complete the missions in any order you see fit.

Also, let me know to which faction leader you all wish to head first.

You head to the office of the Acquisitives’ leader, Radaszam “The Dealmaker”. The vesk manages the deployment of the Acquisitives and his personal mercenary outfit, the Obsidian Spiders. He keeps a public-facing office for this purpose in the Nyori Palisades, a luxurious neighborhood located in Absalom Station’s transparent central dome.

The plain white doors of his office slide open to reveal a stark, dimly lit room. The chamber is bleak and expressionless in its emptiness—no vanities line its smooth black walls, and no signs of use mar its smooth black furniture. The only occupants of the suite are a bug-eyed tadpole wriggling in a glowing blue aquarium and a reptilian vesk seated behind an onyx desk.

The vesk gestures to a number of chairs in front of him, his features sharply illuminated by the light of his desk’s green holoscreen.

“The new graduates,” he greets, in a low and pleasant voice. “Good day. I am Radaszam, though since you are here, I should hope you already knew." The reptilian man lets out a snort that vaguely resembles a chuckle.

A picture of Radaszam can be found on the Slides.

“I trust you are aware of our Society’s traditions, so I will cut to the point." he says, his features suddenly seeming more fearsome and grim. "I have a minor situation that needs resolution. One of our members, a human named Laboni, had a rather public altercation with a junk scavenger from the Spike. You might be more familiar with the scavenger than I, actually; he is a ysoki who fancifully calls himself Ratrod. I am told he runs a popular racing competition that has, hmm, several hundreds of thousands of viewers on the station’s infosphere."

"For some reason," the vesk seems to sigh or perhaps hiss, "Laboni felt the need to tell him that any ‘real’ mechanic could easily beat the garbage that Ratrod and his associates slap together. Now that Ratrod has issued an infosphere-wide demand that she race him and prove it, Laboni doubts she can back that claim up."

“Embarrassing, isn’t it?" Radaszam flashes a brief, toothy nd painful-looking smile. "Not really the sort of troublemaker that suits our Society. Perhaps she would be better suited to the bottom of a trash compactor..."

After allowing his words to hang in the air for a few moments, he continues, "Well, we cannot afford to throw her out, not after so many Starfinders were lost in the Scoured Stars. Besides, we can’t let people think we are so weak that we can’t control our own members, or that we cannot stand up to a scrapyard junker."

"No," he says adamantly. "I would like you to assist Laboni in winning this race. Show our detractors that even the least of our Society is not someone to be trifled with.”

He pauses and looks at you with seemingly cold, reptilian eyes. "Is that all understood?"

"This one gets it." the vesk replies, pointing a scaly hand toward the technomancer. Surveying the recruits, Radaszam gives a satisfied nod. "You all look like you have sufficient expertise to put together a competitive junk racer." he says. "Except, maybe, for you, 'space knight'." The vesk now points his scaly finger at the half-orc. "Laboni's at the track down in Botscrap." Radaszam answer."I'll have the coordinates sent to your devices." The vesk then reaches into the draw of his desk and produces a series of badges--one for each of you--marking you as Laboni’s official pit crew.

"Don't delay." he suggests. "There is only so much time before the race and you need as much of it as you can to help with this race."

The vesk sits down in his chair and waves a hand to usher you out. As you leave, he calls out, "Know that the Starfinders’ reputation remains rather precarious at the moment. Any disciplinary issues can be settled after saving face."

Following the directions sent by Radaszam, you easily find the location of Ratrod’s racing circuit, a hollowed-out section of a mountain of spare parts in Botscrap. Signs in the area indicate that the track is specifically sanctioned by the ysoki-dominated Salvage Union that controls most of the yards.

When the you arrive at the competitors’ entrance, a small robot appears to inform you of the basic rules of the race: racers and their pit crews are to build and improve their vehicles from the available scrap around the racetrack. Vehicles built at previous junkraces can return. Racers can fire upon other competitors during the race, but firing into the audience is grounds for immediate disqualification; racer weapons must be nonlethal and may affect only opponents’ vehicles.

As you search for Laboni, you realize that she is pretty easy to find in the crowd due to her paisley clothes and bright white lab coat.

REVISED FOR IMPLICATION OF FOUR PLAYER ADJUSTMENT:
Now, here's what we need....

Prep phase!

Options: Everybody gets 6 actions

Improve Laboni’s Junkracer, 1 action: DC 14 Computers, Engineering, Perception, or Physical Science. Find junk in the scrapyard to add to the racer, or upgrade or fix what Laboni has found.

You can improve:

-The Engine
-The Steering System
-The Armor Plating
-The Shield System
-Install a energy based weapon
-Install a Kinetic based weapon
-Upgrade a previously installed weapon.

Investigate the enemy, combined with other action at penalty, or 1 Action: Scout opponents with a DC 13 Sense motives, or their racer with a DC 13 Engineering check.

Sabotage, 2 Actions: 1 action to attempt to stealth, 1 attempt at engineering to apply penalty to opponents racer.

Socializing, 1 action: gain personal information on each racer, and perhaps form alliances, Diplomacy check and attempt to convince.

Pictures of the five opponent racers, Ratrod, Lemgen, Velocity, Nyizin, and Orsis, can STILL be found on Slides!

Great, great start of a 3. . . (eye roll)

If DC 14 succeeds:
Well that oughta hold for now.

If DC 14 failes:
Ah, this thing is completely shot, we’ll need a new one.

I have played via PbP both ways. You've identified what I think are the pros/cons of each. I am fine with the party's consensus on how to proceed (either 1 action per "round" or post all actions at once).

The gnome concludes that the relativistic velocity joint is completely shot.

DC 16 for Engineering checks to improve the junk racer (The 4-player adjustment no longer applies).

The dark-haired lashunta, who looks unfairly good in black and gold, immediately notices the light blue Morlamaw with the sparkling feather boa. How could anyone miss her?

Elina, Will (DC 15): 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (15) + 1 = 16

"I have no interest in helping out your young Starfinder." Orsis says, stoically. "However, I like the flash in your boa, so here's a few tips: Never steer fully into the turn, treat your stabilizers like they're your grandparents, and always bet on the lashunta."

These tips can be used while remotely controlling Laboni’s vehicle, granting a +2 insight bonus to Piloting checks.

The beautiful android with silver hair and skin appears to have been self-modified to have both masculine and feminine attributes. They have decorated their clothing, eyelids, and lips with bright, colorful patterns.

"Racing is in my programming. It is true that my piloting skills are exceptional." they respond flatly with little hint of actual conceit. "I have yet, however, to win a single race. It would seem that my engineering skills are subpar. Though I long to drive something faster, I lack the expertise to make this happen. Accordingly, I find myself often lagging behind the other racers. Accepting the low probability of a victory, I have mostly continued with the races as a form entertainment, which allows me to shoot at other racers during the competition."

"If I were able to improve the speed of my junk racer--or find an ally that were to allow me to do so--that would indeed be, as you put it, 'sublime'." they suggest.

@ Elina - You believe that the party could persuade the android into an alliance if you were to improve the android’s junkracer speed (which requires a successful a Mechanics check).

Let me speak to my contacts darling. My people will call your people. Remember, as the greatest racer once said, "Gotta go fast!".

Can I mention how much I love Velocity's Portrait?

Elina speaks into a com and calls over to the team.

Darlings, if time permits, Velocity would LOVE it if you could perhaps find the time to help out with her racer? Hmmm? They say they might help PUT that fuzzy racer in his place... Last! Ohohohohoh!

She covers her mouth with a flipper as she continues on to LemGem.

Oh my!

She cries as she leans down, smiling at them.

First "Round" of Actions

The Zappit Brothers make a determination relativistic velocity joint is cracked beyond repair. Hach finds a replacement joint, but it too turns out to have a small fracture on it. The only joint that Deloran manages to locate among the junk is half-smoked.

Tschisk wisely replaces the Synestra-Heffel steering mechanisms with one better capable of handling high speeds.

The vehicle gains a +1 Piloting modifier.

Elina manages to sweet talk Orsis enough to get a few racing tips.
+2 insight bonus to Piloting checks

Second "Round" of Actions

Tschisk removes the resistance pulleys, but their absence does not appear to reduce the drag on the junkracer as he had hoped. Hach locates a discarded syringe.

Elina swoons over Velocity and believes that the Starfinders can win over their support with a little engineering advice. Deloran seals the deal when he replaces the flow modulation system on Velocity's junkracer. Velocity Alliance

Out of gratitude, Velocity assures Deloran that they will position themselves during the race to take second place if Laboni is in the lead and to direct their weapons against anyone in front of Laboni’s junkracer.

Still need the Zappit Brothers action for "Round" Two.

"Oooooh! Those are jamminnnnn'!" Lemgem, a blue-haired gnome covered in piercings, tattoos, and augmentations, responds with admiration of the Starfinder's tusks. "As for my mods, I'm glad your liken' them and all--but, I don't know. After seein' your tusks, I'm thinkin' that a pair of curved out, exhaust pipes would like suppah rad!"

A look of excitement covers her face, "Oh, yes! And then I could get a pair of dental extensions to match. Wouldn't that be somethin'? Awesome!" The gnomes pierced tongue wags approvingly.

Elina:
You conclude that Lemgem is obsessed with continual alterations to herself and her racer, to the point where her vehicle modifications skirt the bounds of common sense.

You believe that it wouldn't be too difficult to convince Lemgem to dangerously overclock her own machine in order to cause the vehicle’s engine to explode. (requires a Bluff check)

Alternatively, you think that the gnome may be open to offering tips or entering into alliance if you were spend some additional time laying on the admiration.
(requires a Diplomacy check)
