A Pathfinder Society Scenario designed for level 1-2.

Almost all Pathfinders undergo extensive training for three or more years to learn the tricks of the trade, and their last test before graduating from the ranks of the initiates to the status of a full Pathfinder agent is the Confirmation, a special research project that involves considerable fieldwork and is designed to simulate the initiates' future work as a Pathfinder. Even the noteworthy field commissioned agents sometimes participate in such trials as a way to familiarize themselves with the Pathfinder Society’s rules and expectations. Although Confirmation is typically an individual affair, the society recently discovered a site on the Isle of Kortos that would be perfect for initiates but perhaps too dangerous to handle alone. Successfully uncovering this site’s secrets will not only contribute to the society’s body of knowledge but shape the exciting careers ahead for each of the prospective agents.

The invitation delivered last night was remarkably simple, especially given the importance of the occasion: “Start where it all began. Meet us at the Pig’s Paunch one hour before dawn.” The Pig’s Paunch is a run-down building with a faded sign of a large pig standing on its hind legs, arms folded above a corpulent belly. Inside, the air is thick with the scents of human sweat, stale tobacco, and leftover food. The sign over the door looks oddly like a certain fellow you know, Armstrong you believe his name was...

In the center of the room, surrounded by inebriates sleeping off their revelries, a familiar elven man stands high upon top of a large round table. “Welcome! Welcome, my students! Please, have a seat!” With that, Kreighton Shaine, the Pathfinder Society’s Master of Scrolls, nimbly drops down to sit cross-legged on the table before looking about the tavern with a sense of reverent wonder. “Can you believe it? It all started here years ago—well, over four hundred of them at least. Under this very roof the Pathfinder Society was born."

“But today! Today you will begin your Confirmation! Master Farabellus, Master Zey, and I all agree you each have shown your worth and dedication to the Society, so there’s no better time to see if you can handle becoming full field operatives. Allow me to introduce you to Janira Gavix,” he says as he motions for an excitable halfling woman to approach. She wears a large backpack and carries all manner of tools, pouches, and scroll cases around her waist. Shaine continues, saying, “Janira here will be going with you on your Confirmation. She was one of my brightest pupils and will no doubt be an invaluable resource on your journey, for she discovered the caves you are about to explore during her own Confirmation.”

Janira speaks up in an enthusiastic and cheerful voice, “Greetings, aspiring Pathfinders! Six months ago, while I was mapping cave entrances in the foothills of the Kortos Mounts, I witnessed a lone gillman entering a concealed cave. I thought little of it at the time, but I saw another one enter the cave again a month later as my Confirmation stretched on. A few days later, after I completed my assigned task, I entered the cave system, but was unable to find the gillmen.”

Master Shaine hops to his feet. “Initiates, for your Confirmation, you will travel to these caves to explore and document its many passages. Additionally, and most importantly, you are to learn what the gillmen are up to in there. Oh, and you need to come back alive as well.” With these parting words, the Master of Scrolls jumps off the table and strolls out of the building while humming to himself.

Greetings, Lady Janira, and fellow aspiring Pathfinders! I am Linux Bladerose, pride of Taldor and blade of Kurgess himself! I look forward to leading a group of initiates on this expedition and proving my worth amongst the Pathfinder ranks. I assume you have a copy of your map that will lead me to the cavern where these lowly gillmen are cowering in the depths. If you would be so kind as to provide it to me, along with any potions, weapons, or other artifacts that you believe may aid me in my victory, I will assemble the most worthy of the assembled to begin the quest laid before me!

<Linux glances around at the rest of the assembled Pathfinder hopefuls, proudly but not arrogantly, and extends his right arm towards Janira, expecting to receive a map and any other items offered.>

Janira doesn't mind waiting as only two of the five expected Pathfinders have shown up for their task. Master Shaine was obviously a little inebriated during his speech and failed to notice there were only two people listening as he gave his speech about their mission.

Janira addresses Linux's request, "I will be your map to the caverns as I will be assisting your directly during our adventure. However, it will fall upon all of you to map the caverns..." she says as she rummages through her pack and finds some extra paper and writing utensils to hand out to the group that has shown up so far. "As for equipment, it is part of the Confirmation to show that you are well-prepared as a Pathfinder should be, for any situation you might encounter." She looks to the door and makes sure that Master Shaine is long gone before opening her pack to pull out a few things. "But I'm always happy to share my equipment if any of you can find a use for it."

With that, she offers to let you guys have:

Potion of Barkskin
2x Potion of Cure Light Wounds
Scroll of Gust of Wind
Scroll of Identify
2x Alchemist Fire
2x Tanglefoot Bags
Smokestick
Holy Water
Thunderstone

Lucent stands up from his table in the corner, leaving a now-empty breakfast plate and ale tankard behind. Despite the uncouth appearance he presents with his unkempt hair and shaggy beard, the large grin across his weather-worn face reveals his genial nature.
He strolls up to the table where the other pathfinders have gathered, sweeping his dark purple shoulder-cloak behind him. "S'pose it couldn't hurt to hold to to yer extra fire bottle 'n tangle bag for ya, Janira. Just in case. And I believe ya have the wand I'd asked Master Zey for as well?"

<Lucent takes 1x Tanglefoot Bag and 1x Alchemist Fire, and trades 2PP for a Wand of Cure Light Wounds.>

Korvosan Sewers | | Abandoned Vault

Janira notices the extra fellow joining the rest at the table and perks up at his mention of the wand. "Ah yes, Master Shaine mentioned a seasoned Pathfinder coming along. On behalf of the Pathfinder Society, I want to thank you for your service and reward you with this Wand of Cure Light Wounds." She looks around at the fresh adventurers, knowing what inexperience looks like as she herself was once just like them. The halfling excitedly hopped up on to a stool and shouted among the inebriated, "Take note new Pathfinders! There are many rewards as you make your name in Absalom and become one of the Pathfinder's greatest. My name has not yet been sung by the bards, but I am sure that one day we will ALL be remembered for our deeds to the Society!"

Hmm? What? Oh look, now you've made me lose my place...

Raphael puts down the tome he was reading, entitled "How to be an Adventurer by Uther Pendragon" and gets to his feet, rising from his chair to join the group.

So you are to be my companions? Don't worry, I've been studying adventuring for some time. I've already defeated the Wild Ferret of the Village, and solved the Mystery of the Missing Flour... Raphael leans in conspiratorially It turns out the baker's wife was making pies on the side!

Raphael looks over the goods laid out before him Oh yes, these will do nicely. I'll take those scrolls, some alchemical fire is always useful, and a healing potion seems like a WISE investment.....because I'm a wizard you see?

Raphael pauses, waiting for laughter that never comes. Sorry, that one may have gone over your heads Raphael quickly realises he's talking to a dwarf and a halfling Not that there's anything bad about being short! I know many heroic individuals who have overcome being vertically challenged! Oh dear, oh dear... Raphael mutters to himself as he picks up the goods and scurries back to his books.

The door to the Pig’s Paunch opens as Eradan finally arrives at the establishment. He looks as though he has spent a few days in the wild, hair a bit of a mess and many days unshaven. He quickly spots the fellow Pathfinders and makes his way over.

"I never have gotten used to navigatin' these cities."

Seeing the Dwarf's ale low, Eradan orders 2 and raises his glass to the Dwarf.

"Aye, nothin' better than an ale before an adventure. So what trouble we be gettin' into?"

Korvosan Sewers | | Abandoned Vault

Janira goes over the details of Master Shaine's speech, making sure to emphasize that your Confirmation mission is to explore and document the many passages of the cavern, while passing out small parchments and writing utensils so you have the supplies to do so on hand. She also mentions that you are to find out what the gillmen are up to within the cavern and report back to the Pathfinder Society with your findings.

After taking a second to wet her whistle with some ale, she pulls out a large leather-bound journal and opens it on the table. “Before we set out, we should all get to know each other and review our plan. After all, the most important factors that determine whether an expedition will be a success are cooperation and preparation! I’ll go first!”

She clears her throat as she takes a heroic pose and stands as tall as she can, "I am Janira Gavix and I have been a Pathfinder for 4 years. I joined the Society right when I was of age, the eldest of seven siblings in a small dwelling out in Eastgate." She smiles to herself at the thought of her dad still working as a porter, riding around in his dog cart. She looks back at the adventurers and clears her head. "I have been studying under Master Shaine in the pursuit of knowledge and I am particularly fond of chronicling my adventures. I hope one day that I can become a well renowned Pathfinder Chronicler! But Master Shaine wasn't my only teacher; Masters Farabellus and Aram Zey have both been mentors to me as well, the former training me in the art of the whip and crossbow, while the latter has taught me a few spellcasting tricks."

With that, she pulls out a fresh page of parchment and begins writing down the names of the heroes going on their Confirmation. "And what about you all? What made you decide to join the Pathfinder Society?"

"I am Eradan, I grew up in the wilds, far north of here. I've spent much of my life exploring the wilds of the world. I'm a fresh recruit to the society, having joined only recently."

Eradan downs the last of his ale and grins.

"I joined the society for an opportunity to help those in need, to free them from their oppressors. Everyone should be allowed to choose their own destiny."

Eradan takes a seat after that and pulls out his pipe, taking a long drag from it.

Raphael steps forward and mumbles "My father.." He looks at the book clutched in his hands and steels himself. He begins again with confidence "My father was a great man, he was an adventurer, a leader, and a teacher. He gave knowledge freely, you may have read his "One hundred and one uses for a Bag of Holding", and he protected those who could not defend themselves. I never thought adventuring would be for me, I was always more interested in learning, but after... after he was murdered by unknown forces I swore to continue his legacy, and so here I am."

Raphael looks around at the group to see who will introduce themselves next, and his gaze falls on the remaining unclaimed goods that Janira left for the party

"Rule fourteen of "How to be an Adventurer" states to never leave goods on the table. I can't carry much, but..." Raphael looks around the group "Eradan, do you see anything you might find useful?"

Linux raises his mug up in a salute to those gathered, finishes off his remaining ale, slams the empty tankard onto the table, and strides to the door of the Pig's Paunch.

"Lady Janira, are you ready to show us the way to the lair of these elusive gillmen? We shall map their lair for thee and put an end to whatever nefarious plot that they may be plotting in the depths. I will bring glory to House Bladerose of Taldor, as did my father, Unix, before me. My family's name is well-known within the halls of the Pathfinder guilds, even though we are not among the richest houses of Taldor. We have refused to sell-out our services, like mercenaries, as have the likes of the House MacApple or House McRosoft. We believe that all men deserve an open source of freedom and wealth, and I intend to continue to honor that tradition! I fight for honor and glory for Kurgess, House Bladerose, and all the men and women of Taldor! Are you with me, men?!"

Without waiting for a response, Linux marches out of the inn, assuming that the remaining Pathfinder initiates and Janire will follow.

Giving Lucent and Matarn a chance to do intros. It's actually written in here to have you guys do it, to give you an idea of what a normal campaign is like for those that are new.

Janira shrugs as the Warpriest of Kurgess marches out of the room, ranting of freedom and wealth. "And this is precisely why I don't give out maps. Anywho! We'll find him when everyone is done introducing themselves, I'm sure he's just outside attempting to get more followers of Linux, and the Bladerose family."

Lucent scratched the back of his head.
"Why'd I join the Pathfinders? Well, uh... I guess that'd be 'cause those lovely priestesses recommended it!" he said with a grin. Lucent paused before realizing everyone was waiting for him to continue."Oh! The two clerics of Desna is what I mean. The ones who saved my life."
Realizing he now needed to go further back in his story, Lucent pulled the nearest chair over and took a seat. "Alright, so back some time ago, I was a mercenary. Not an assassin or anything, mind you, just a caravan guard. It was a good life, traveling to new places, getting paid to shoot would-be thieves... but one day... I didn't see them."
He licked his lips before continuing, and furrowed his brow as if straining to remember. "Something hit me in the head. A rock, I suppose. 'Bout knocked me out. Next thing I knew, my face was in the dirt and someone was screaming. They were just your average highway bandits. Shouldn't have been trouble... had they not gotten that jump on us. I tried to stab one them, still half dazed, and was repaid with his own knife in my gut."
Lucent shook his head and sighed, but when he looked up again, his wide grin was back. "The old me died that day. I dreamed I floating in the sky. A night sky with more stars than I'd ever seen before. And I heard her voice. Desna... She told me she'd bring me back, but in return, she asked something of me. No longer would I be a mercenary who guarded those with the most gold. No, no... now I seek out those who would prey on travelers. Those who cause the trouble. The source of the problem!"
As he spoke, Lucent got louder and more vehement, until he ended up slamming his fist on the table at the end of statement. Realizing he had started shouting, Lucent cleared his throat, calmed down, and continued: "So, uh, the clerics, right. A pair of beauties they were! Leia and Amidala were their names, clerics of Desna. Came upon our sacked caravan just in time to save my life. I traveled with them for a time and learned what they would teach me of Desna's scrolls. They told me if I wished to travel the path Desna had set before me, the Liberty's Edge of the Pathfinders would be my next destination. So, uh, yes, that'd be why I joined the Pathfinder Society."

Linux is grinning, offering encouraging words to the straining ruffian as they look to be in a deadlock. The defeated man sorely eyes Linux as he walks away, tenderly nursing his arm. Linux confidently strides towards the group as they enter the sun-filled street. ”Ah, so you’ve decided to join me at last. Linux turns to Janira, ”So which way to these caves of yours?”

Raphael - Knowledge History: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (7) + 9 = 16

Raphael seems to remember something about Gillmen; a book he read in the Grand Lodge's libraries, perhaps.

(DC 15+) Also known as the Low Azlanti, the gillmen are an amphibious humanoid race believed to be the last descendants of the Azlanti people.

Korvosan Sewers | | Abandoned Vault

Janira leads the group across the Cairnlands, talking about Master Shane's class on the history of Absalom as Raphael brings up his little tidbit of knowledge to the rest of the group concerning the gillmen. "Ah yes, the gillmen look just like any other human except for these long slits on there neck where their gills are. Very peculiar indeed. I didn't know much about them so that's intriguing that they may be the last descendants of the Azlanti." She points out more landmarks along the way such as distant mountains and siege towers, describing various battles that have taken place in the Cairnlands. You travel throughout the day until you reach the edge of the forest, surrounding the Kortos Mounts. "Just a little further into these woods and we'll be at the cave! But it's getting dark and we should make camp for the night." She looks around before darting off to find a secure location to camp, as the rest of the party is forced to wait due to not having any sort of directions from Master Shane or Janira.

You guys are camping for the night. If you need to regain spells, etc, go for it now, but I'm going to move us on ahead to the next day.

You all wake up and have a hearty breakfast before venturing further into the woods. The trees towering overhead begin to shield most of the sun and the vegetation beneath grows denser. Janira pauses a moment and pulls out an intricate silver compass emblazoned with the Pathfinder Society logo: the Glyph of the Open Road. "I received this wayfinder when I successfully completed my Confirmation. Should we be successful on our journey, you will get your own as well!" She flips open the device and holds it in front of her; the initials J.L. are engraved into the inside of the device's lid. "We're on the right path, we need to keep heading northwest past those large rocks up ahead."

Going to add a map soon. It should be linked near my name once I have it up, go ahead and position yourselves in the box, marching order.

Sadly, it was not charging so it did not have reduced reaction, allowing it to avoid the oncoming arrow and continue its approach as it charges the shield-ready dwarf.

The other hippogriff is dead so three of you will act and more than likely take it down since you can see it's about half dead already.

Eradan and Linux, if either of you hit AC 15, Matarn will kill it. It has 1 HP left. If you both hit and deal 10 damage, you'll kill it before Matarn gets a chance. Either way I'm pretty sure it's dead, so once I get a hit I'll start moving us on to the next area.

Linux stabs the hippogriff and kills it immediately as Matarn gets some revenge by bashing the creature's head into the ground as it lay still.

Having Christmas dinner at the parent's place. I'll use Janira to heal you guys up and move on to the next section when I get back.

Janira congratulates you all on your first battle.

Wand of CLW (CL 3rd) - 7 charges left: 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (5) + 3 = 8 healing for Matarn.

Janira encourages you all to grab your things and continue moving, as there may be more predators lurking around, or worse, the parents of those young hippogriffs you just murdered.

As you continue through the wilderness, there are a lot of worn trails, fallen objects in the path, overgrowth, and other various things getting in your way. Sadly, none of you were good enough at survival to reach the cave by dusk which puts you 3 hours behind schedule. Janira urges you to make camp for the night and you do.

Normally you get to choose to push onward or rest for the night, but there's a special thing that happens for people who have done this before, if they choose to rest, so we'll go with that option. The DC was 15, haha.

The next day, Janira wakes you all up and lets you prepare for the rest of the journey to the cave.

The dense forest opens to a wide clearing at the base of a sheer cliff. Thick vines cover the surface of the cliff stretching 30 feet overhead. “Here! The cave entrance is behind those vines,” Janira says with a broad smile as she walks to the cliff’s face. She pulls back several layers of vegetation to reveal a narrow crack in the cliff’s surface. “This is where I saw the gillmen enter.” As she motions toward the aperture, the surrounding woods come alive with the sound of small animals fleeing some unseen danger and a large creature crashing through the undergrowth. The halfling worriedly remarks, “Quick, take cover before whatever it is spots us!” As if she’d summoned the creature with her words, a massive horned monstrosity emerges from the trees. Standing eight feet tall on a pair of cloven hooves and wielding a tremendous axe, the bull-headed creature roars with unbridled anger when it spots the group.

Wisely assessing that a minotaur is beyond her charges’ capabilities, Janira screams, “A minotaur! There’s little chance we can stand against it. Take this bag,” she continues, pulling off her backpack, “and head deeper into the caves. Finish your mission. I’ll lead it away from the caves, lose it in the forest, and join you as soon as I can. Now go! GO!” She heaves her backpack into the cave, casts a spell, and darts off toward the minotaur before turning to lure it away.

Raphael takes one look at the imposing minotaur and decides to heed Janira's warning. Racing headlong into the caves he grabs the backpack as he goes. He entreats the party to follow him, his voice receding into the distance as he makes his escape.

"Gentlemen, may I remind you that discretion is often thought to be the better part of valor!"

Aye, you heard the lil lass. E'ryone inta the ca'e. Matarn with shield and warhammer ready waits by the entrance to make sure everyone enters the cave safely. She knows wha' she i' doin'. We shall see the lil lass again. In we go! Motioning to the rest of the party to follow Raphael's lead.

You reach the cave system and enter through a narrow keyhole tunnel. The cave is damp, so anything Acrobatics-related will be slightly more difficult. There are many petroglyphs lining the walls, mostly depicting marine animals or spiral shapes.

The narrow tunnel twists and turns for several hundred feet before slowly opening to a wider passage. A large hole spans the cave’s width and stretches ten feet down the path. At the bottom of the pit lies a small bundle of cloth.

Literally all of you can tell that the pit has been artificially created, as Raphael takes an extra second to add that it's at least a year old.

What kind of pit is it?!: 1d6 ⇒ 3

Raphael informs the party that it's a simple pit trap about 20 feet deep.
