"Are you sure that's entirely necessary? We just need to find out if we're actually going the right way. Plus, at the Grand Lodge, they mentioned divination spells weren't working up here. Seems like we're just in it for our own merits right now, Nagato."
The sands seemed to stretch on forever. Whatever secret held within the River of Sands, it was more well hidden than previously thought. All the desert seemed the same to Jacob.

DM Fnord |
With the effects of the oppressive heat momentarily abated, the party continues across the desert.
Without teleportation, and at the party's speed, it would be at least 4 days to cross the desert before reaching the foot of the Napsune Mountains.
The rest of the first day continues without incident. It is fortunate that the party is flying above the heat inversion layer, saving them from the confusion of mirages.
By the end of the day thirst has started to take its toll. Validk learned that his goblet of quenching was not working, nor any other spell that could conjure water. Fortunately Orsenn had filled several barrels with water back in Manaket.
Day two proceeds much as the first day. More areas of damaged dunes become evident as the party continues to fly across the desert. Now it can be seen that some areas are fresher than others as the disruptions show signs of overlapping and new dunes developing over older areas.
Late on the second day the party sees part of a dune collapse, followed a moment later by another dune. The collapsed dunes look like the phenomena they have seen before. Nothing is visible on the surface, and magical vision aids detect no aura's.
As the third dune collapses, the party can see where the next few dunes in front of the phenomena are most likely to be affected.

Jacob Radigan |

The sun beat down on them for days on end. The night, however, was a boon upon Jacob during the excursion. Jacob had no qualms about using another casting of Mage's Magnificent Mansion. However, the properties of the spell to bring out food and drink seemed to be blocked. This weighed heavily upon them, but at least the group had significant shelter. It seemed that he was alone in wanting to explore during the night and sleep during the day. Reasonable enough, he thought. Weather, no matter how bad, was not that great a reason for messing up with everyone's sleep schedule. Still, it would've been nice.
The next day, the group examined a strange phenomenon. The collapse of several dunes seemed... odd. Jacob never often stayed too close to deserts, but he was rather sure that sand dunes didn't necessarily start falling over at a moment's notice. Sand, unless being acted upon by an outside force, did not tend to move like that. He turned back to the group.
"Is anyone else noticing this? I think there might be something under the sands. Seems roughly the size of what caused that crater closer to town." He raised a hand, gesturing it not unlike an Alkenstar native would brandish a pistol. "Would anyone mind if I blasted it?"

Katja Silverscale |

As the day wore on, Katja found that the heat did little against her hearty constitution. Fortunately, she feels no hunger or thirst due to her ring of sustenance.

"That does seem about the right size. Let me take a look. If it is, I'll call out and you can have all the fun you want."
With a strong flap of her wings, Katja does a fly by to try and notice what the creature (or thing) is.

Nagato the Eternal |

Wanting to pull her weight, Mira alternates casting Mage's Magnificent Mansion with Jacob. Considering how little magic she typically spends beyond the spells she and Lady Nagato exchange, she does not find it too troubling. What does bother her is that some of her allies aren't protected from the heat like she and her mother.
Upon questioning Nagato about it, the Oldest Samsaran replies, "I suppose I can prepare Endure Elements tomorrow. Not to sound arrogant, but it's practically a cantrip for me these days."
After seeing Jacob and Katja sweating bullets throughout the next day, the Masked Monk offers to both of them, "Care for a dose of Endure Elements, you two?"
As Katja takes flight, Nagato watches the sand dunes crumble and begins to ponder the situation, "...I think whatever is collapsing the dunes is underground."
In case anyone is wonder, Nagato casts Life Bubble (which includes Endure Elements level protection in it) on herself and Mira daily after a mishap that ended up with the two of them nearly getting launched into space.

Jacob Radigan |

"I'm going to take that as a 'yes'. Let's see if we can get a bead on this thing from here."
With a flourish, Jacob casts Meteor Swarm upon what would appear to be the next dune to collapse. With his connection to the Dark Tapestry, opposed to the stars themselves, the ensuing explosion coats the area in cold instead of fire.

Nagato the Eternal |

"...Don't you think that's a bit excessive, Jacob?" Mira asks as the blonde ex-priestess watches her fellow sorcerer rain down a massive storm of fiery death upon their unsuspecting foe. "I mean-"
The Razmiran woman flinches as Nagato abruptly begins chanting in a blend of Thassilonian and Samsaran. The Masked Monk then claps her hands together, causing the very ground itself to quake below. All Mira can do is roll her eyes, huff, and massage her temples.
Earthquake Reflex DC 15: 8d6 ⇒ (3, 1, 2, 5, 6, 3, 6, 3) = 29
Everyone is flying, so what the heck? :D

Jacob Radigan |

Because the flying mage is an archetype so long rooted in how cool it is, that I'm 75% sure that Overland Flight was created mostly for flavor text. Besides, I'm pretty sure that if I mention Jacob flying, 95% of the time, it'll only be a few inches off the ground for effect.
"Well, seems like Nagato's got it right on the nose. Probably is excessive, but I don't know any spells that would be able to hit that thing except MAYBE this. Whatever that thing is down there, chances are we caught it's attention." Jacob examined the scene, smirking at his handiwork.
"Plus, at the very least, maybe it'll be cooler in the aftermath of those explosions."

DM Fnord |
HEADLINE READS:
Itching trigger fingers have the heroes blasting away at piles of sand!
Jacob had been flying up and down the dunes, maintaining only a few feet clearance above the hot sands. With a quick incantation, four flaming spheres fly from his had, quickly growing into flaming meteors that streak across the sand and plow into a collapsing dune.
A series of explosions from the meteor impacts blows sand up into the air where it rains back down for a few minutes.
In its wake the sand has been glazed, burned from the fires unleashed by Jacob. In the sun the glassed surfaces glint and twinkle with reflected light.
For these purposes I'm giving the sand a hardness of 2 (you're standing on it, and it compacts), with 2HP/inch. The first meteor could thus cause damage to a depth of 12 inches. All four taken together would blow a crater almost five feet deep.
And then Nagato's spell rumbles through the ground. An area several times the size of Jacob's meteor impact shakes and settles, collapsing all of the dunes in the area, leveling everything to a uniform height. Deep fissures try to open in the sand but the rumbling earthquake collapses them just as quickly. Large chunks of glazed sand remain, though now broken and jagged from the earthquake.

Katja Silverscale |

Perception: 1d20 + 48 ⇒ (19) + 48 = 67
"Hold up there Jacob!"
Flying over, Katja comes in and hovers 100' above the collapsed fissure. She takes care not to kick up any sand or debris.
From her vantage point, she examines the buried "thing" to see if any movement occurs. After a couple of mintues of no movement, she lands and attempts to dig it up. Not having any natural ability to dig, she just scoops the sand out of the way.

Jacob Radigan |

Even though he didn't see anything, Jake couldn't miss the fervor Katja put into unearthing whatever she observed. He did his best to help with a casting of Unseen Servant and Telekinesis. "What'd it look like? he asked while sifting through the sands. He did his best to keep wary for whatever caught the dragoness's attention.
Unseen Servant should be able to handle 20lbs of sand maximum at once. I'm not sure if a pile of sand counts as a single object for the purposes of Telekinesis, but I decided to use it anyway and err on the side of caution. If piles do count, the spell can move a maximum of 375lbs a round.

DM Fnord |
Earthquake collapses any fissures at the end of the spell effect, even if it didn't the sand would have collapsed into the fissure. Katja saw something that wasn't sand in the brief glance she got.
egads, gonna make me look stuff up... Home Depot sells a half cubic foot of sand that weighs 48 pounds. So lets call it 100 pounds per cubic foot.
I believe everyone can make a DC 12 engineering check and would know the following:
The object was seen 30' down. To excavate a 5' x 5' by 30' shaft, you would need to move 750 cubic feet of sand, or 75,000 pounds.
At 375 pounds per six seconds, it will take 200 rounds to excavate the shaft just with telekinesis. Unseen servant can increase this by 20 lbs a round (and I'm not even considering distance as the hole gets deeper).
Add in some fudge factor for the dragon helping and we can reduce that time factor.
I have two questions:
1) How big a shaft are you making? 5'x5' only works to the extent of Katja's reach, then she is too big.
2) How are you shoring up the sides of the shaft?
3) Any other ideas? :)

Nagato the Eternal |

"...Hey, Lady Nagato?" Mira asks as she and her surrogate mother watch Katja and Jacob vigorously try to part the sand.
"Yes, Mira?"
"...Can't you just turn into that big badger thing and dig right through the sand? You know, the one with claws that can punch through solid bedrock?" the sorceress inquires innocently.
"...That would have saved us a lot of time and effort, wouldn't it?" Nagato mumbles to herself as she descends to the worksite.
Once grounded, she quickly shifts to a much smaller form, a big blue-furred celestial badger that stands at about the height of Jacob's belly. "Allow me," she says as begins slowly tunneling her way downward to the buried object.
With a +54 perception, Nagato auto makes the check.

DM Fnord |
Nagato quickly burrows through the loose sand about 25' down the sand starts getting warm, if she didn't have endure elements on it would be quite uncomfortable.
At 32' she runs out of sand. Whatever it is, she can feel a lot of heat emanating from it. The surface is hard, her claws slide across the surface effortlessly.
As Nagato explores, she reaches an edge and discovers that the surface she is touching is fitted under another at one end. It doesn't take long to identify that she is feeling some sort of plate roughly five feet across. Two ends tuck under other plates, two ends overlap.
There's something about the way those plates fit together that eludes her for a moment, it's almost as if, but it couldn't be, like scales?
How much exploring will Nagato do?
3...

Validk Ghujod |

Validk pats the neck of his phantom steed as he and Orsenn slowly trot around the area, ten feet off the ground. With gentle taps of his knees, he steers the steed next to Mira.
Did you see what caught Katja's attention? I was admiring the glazed sand and missed it. Just how fast can your mother burrow?

Jacob Radigan |

Jacob's on the ground and he doesn't even stand a chance. And here I thought a +37 to Perception would be reasonable. How wrong I was!
"Val, if you wanted to see more of that, you just had to ask. Though maybe after we find whatever is down there." Jacob attempts to further scoop sand away under his spell's effect. "You were right about the sand, Kat."

Nagato the Eternal |

"...I regret nothing."
Nagato (somehow) curls her claws into a fist and slams it against against the scaled thing beneath her.

Mythic Greater Vital Strike Damage: 4d8 + 80 ⇒ (7, 3, 1, 8) + 80 = 99

Jacob Radigan |

Jacob looks at her bewilderedly. "What, the thing underground? Nagato's checking that out, why Di you need to be so high up for that?" He scratched his head, but quickly pulled his hood back up to protect him from the harsh sun. "Are you saying there's something else, now?"

DM Fnord |
Blind and barely cognizant of direction, and buried 30' under the surface (well a bit less than 30' with the rhythmic digging from Jacob and Katja), Nagato (somehow) curls her claws into a fist and slams it against against the scaled thing beneath her.
Her fist slams into the scale-like plate. If she could see her handy work, she'd see a sizable impression in the material from her knuckles. Several small cracks radiate out from the point of impact, breaking off a section of the plate. A crack runs across the rest of the plate and disappears under the overlapping plate edge.
A rumble courses through the sand around Nagato. Whatever it is, it is no longer still.
Nagato finds herself tumbling as the sand churns while the object moves along under her. don't roll a 1 on your reflex
After several seconds, the end has not arrived.
*****
On the surface, the sand under Jacob vibrates for a moment and then begins to move, the sides of the hole start collapsing in unduing Jacob's hard digging. Nagato and the object under the sand appear to be moving. The 'hump' of sand only travels forward a few dozen feet, what ever it is, it is no longer traveling parallel to the surface.

Validk Ghujod |

Validk glances over at Katja, What do you see? Validk squints off into the distance, another mirage?

Nagato the Eternal |

Feeling herself about ready to drown in the fast turning sand, Nagato quickly alters her form to something more suitable to the environment. Her form quickly first shrinks slightly size but becomes more durable. Blue fur gives way to solid rock, and badger shape alters to become something semi-humanoid. A few seconds later, Nagato rapidly expands in size to enhance her grit.
Once stable, the Masked Monk begins to ascend to the surface, pushing through the sand like a fish swims through water.
Swiftly Action: Wild Shape into a Small Earth Elemental. Nagato is doing so she avoids the complications of expanding size against the effective weight of the plant. However, Earthglide should effectively turn the sand into an the equivalent of a movable ocean of water.
Move Action: Wild Shape again into a Huge Earth Elemental.

DM Fnord |
Jacob witnesses the ground shifting and moving under him, the sides of the hole he had been digging falling in. Nagato, shifts through several forms are returns to the surface.
Validk and Orsenn are floating in the air, squinting off into the distance, vainly looking for whatever Katja noticed.
Katja (I assume) is casually circling the group up in the air (100'?).
Where and what are Jacob, Nagato and Mira doing?
And if so inclined, Nagato would have had an AoO opportunity.

Jacob Radigan |

Jacob realized that whatever was down there probably wasn't good for anyone if Nagato jumped to an elemental of that size, especially a giant Earth one. With a panicked twitch, he began reciting the words and gestures for Haste. However, the once familiar spell felt different to him. The voice at the back of his mind seemed to be speaking through him now. He didn't ever remember feeling as spry after casting this before. He attempted to target as many of his teammates as possible.

Mira quickly uses the extra speed granted to her by Jacob to reach her surrogate mother's side and casts a spell on Nagato.
Nagato swift action Wild Shapes into a Huge Air Elemental and flies toward Jacob and the rest of the crew. Mira meets her halfway to cast Greater Heroism on Nagato.

DM Fnord |
1 person marked this as a favorite. |
Nagato regains the surface, her final act to strike once more at whatever had been under the sand. The other's draw closer to her and consider what they have witnessed even as Jacob casts haste over them.
Below the sands roil and churn as a massive object moves off towards the southeast. The surface disturbance quickly abates as the object? A creature? The USO's passing is soon unnoticeable.
The party floats or flies in gentle circles dozens of feet in the air. Beneath them the burning sands of a waterless desert spread out to the horizon in each direction. The suns over head burn down on the sands creating visible waves as the air near the surface heats and rises, pushing past cooler air that settles down to be heated in its turn.
All pear into the distance as a sinuous line of sand from another USO approaches from the northwest. This is different though, even at a half mile it is easy to tell that the displace sand indicates a much larger object.
Those that have hair feel it standing up as if the very air is becoming charged with energy.

Validk Ghujod |

moving on...
I'm at a loss. Nearest I've seen was that nest of purple worms back in '54. Got half my team, they did. I think we could all transform into a form that could burrow into the sand. Unwise would it be to confront something in its own environment. Validk shrugs at Jacob.
Orsenn visibly shudders at the thought of just how large and powerful something must be to move that much sand as if swimming in a pond. So long as we be flying, we're up here, and its down there. On to our destination?

Jacob Radigan |

"Our destination," Jacob reiterated, "is south. This is a rescue party without a clue to where the people we're rescuing are." He hated to say it, but the situation did look grim. "What's it been, two, three days so far? Conjuration's been getting shakier and shakier the further we get into this desert. If the Mansion gets dispelled and we're all shunted out in the middle of the night, who's to say that thing won't decide to come around then? Especially if we're shunted out still asleep. I'd rather deal with this sort of problem as it lays before us, Mr. Orsenn. Unless you wish we keep camp in shifts in the future. Or don't even stop at nights."
He looked over the shifting sands again, a furrow deepening in his brow. "Plus, it seems to me that there's a good chance this thing was released on Manaket. Maybe even before the sandstorms. Could you imagine what would happen if we were to let it search for any other desert towns?" He grabbed his Metamagic Rod from his robe pockets and worked his magic. Soon enough, another great beating of wings came forth as Jacob shifted his form into a huge Brass Dragon, clutching the Rod between his teeth like a scoundrel would do with an errant toothpick. "If anyone else recalls, we were first and foremost tasked with the protection of the world. I would believe that this constitutes reason for a slight detour from the rescue mission. If anyone would like to join me, I've got a few forms that could probably get you down there."
Dropping a Form of the Dragon III to get that burrow speed. Haste should still be up, right?

Haste would last a couple minutes at this level. I'm giving you 10 rounds remaining

You do realize that you are entering a gun fight with a parrying knife and one hand tied behind your back?
Yngvar looks at Jacob, his jaw open slightly, umm, hmm. Good points. Do you have any ideas?

Jacob Radigan |

Yngvar? Also, yeah, probably not the brightest idea.
"I'm thinking either trying to bait it towards the surface or cover it with Reverse Gravity. But help would be nice."
He thought over more thoroughly. "Speaking of help, does anyone happen to know of a way to 'see' underground as well?"

Validk Ghujod |

Validk thinks for a moment, well what do we know? They are big, we don't know how big, but we know that they took a chunk out of Manaket, pretty freakin' big chunk too. They swim through sand like it's water. And from what Nagato shared, they have a pretty thick skin and generate a lot of heat.
He shrugs his shoulders, going to them isn't a good idea, we have the means of being able to burrow down to them, but blindsense will only give us so much 'sight.' They obviously have a sensory perception that has some significant range. We need more information, that or we play around with trying to figure out how to draw it to the surface.
Orsenn looks over the edge of the flying carpet, if it ain't coming up here, and we ain't going down there, then lets just get going and find those missing people.

DM Fnord |
With a long look at the sands below, the party continues south, in search of the lost expeditions. As the afternoon wears on, the twin shadows from the group bounce over the dunes as they chase each other in the approaching dusk.
It has been a singularly boring trip, broken only by trails of lightning strikes in the far distance. An occasional dust devil slides along the crest of a dune.
In the distance, an outcropping sticks up above the sand. Getting closer, it is a large upthrust of rock that breaks the sandy sea. One side has sand piled up nearly a third of the height, while arching dunes lead off to each side. The top is jagged and jumbled rock, littered with many cracks and crevices. The top covers an area of several acres. If the windward side is 12 o'clock, your approach is from 2.

Jacob Radigan |

Jacob examined the outcropping to the best of his abilities from the air. "Think they may have set up camp down here?" He hoped greatly that the search may have come to fruition. It looked as though the desert was wearing upon the party greatly by this point, if not just upon Jacob himself.
Perception, if necessary: 1d20 + 37 ⇒ (9) + 37 = 46

Nagato the Eternal |

"Perhaps we should scry them," Nagato offers, her voice slightly bored of all the aimless wandering. "I have a mirror. I can summon or become a water elemental to act as the focus. Alternatively, we use magic to locate water. Miracle will reduce the casting time to three seconds."

Jacob Radigan |

Sadly, Jacob shook his head. "Would've tried that earlier. But the Venture Captain of the Grand Lodge told me that all Divinations in the area had failed..." He had stopped, nearly stunned stupid. Within moments, he buried his face in his hands in varied parts of revelation and shame.
"But that SANDSTORM could've knocked out all the sensors! Oh, for crying out loud, I had USED Greater Prying Eyes upon my first night in Manaket! Ack, I could kick myself, this heat has made my brain soft!" He looked up at the setting sun at the horizon, staring at the sun and uttering some of the worst curses his magic could bring forth. Obviously, the spells could not reach their intended target, but the casting of them made his disposition slightly better via catharsis.
"Validk, did you ever meet your friend's wife? If so, please, please, please tell me you've prepared Discern Location today. On the off chance this doesn't work, the only backup I could think to find these people is trying to survey campfire signs in the middle of the night, and I'm relatively certain nobody else wants to pull a double shift."
So, I'm going to assume everyone's spellcraft checks would be decent enough to notice Jake casting Major Curse and Accursed Glare at the sun. As awkward as that sounds.
