The party presses forward in the direction of the Almsman's sanctuary. Ahead a faint light glimmers in the dark. Slowly it resolves into a crude lantern held by a toothless old beggar who holds a chair leg in his other hand. Beside him stands a scrawny youth, similarly armed but obviously terrified. Behind the two derelicts is an open door bearing the symbol of the beggar’s bowl, coin, and key.

"“If yer intentions be peaceful, Abadar makes you welcome.”

Though putting on a brave face, you can easily deduce that these two 'guards' would flee at the slightest provocation. By their appearance, they are definitely not thugs with the Steel Wyverns.

They allow you entrance. Beyond the door, a short flight of steps leads up into what appears to be the basement crypt of a church of Abadar. Perhaps two dozen beggars huddle among sarcophagi, some sleeping, some haggling over bits of junk or scraps of food laid out on blankets.

A man dressed in a clean robe and wearing a copper mask makes his way among the destitute. Upon noticing the group of Pathfinders enter, he stops and calls out, “If you respect this sanctuary, I offer you what sanctuary I can. Otherwise, begone!”

This is the Almsman, ask any questions you would like.

The Almsman raises his hands in exasperation, "Don't get me started... Those Steel Wyvern thugs! They keep threatening me to shut down my sanctuary here if I don't help them. See, we're in a long-forgotten sub-basement of the local church of Abadar. There's an entryway hidden in the corner back there..."

Anyway, those Wyverns want me to break in and steel from the church. The church doesn't even know I'm down here. You know, folks down here... they don't have much expectation of safety. As far as I know, I'm it. Well, come here..."

The Almsman waves you over to three especially sickly-looking people. All unconscious and moaning weakly. "These poor souls - contracted filth fever. I can provide some basic healing, but I'm not trained to cure diseases! All I can do is try and make them comfortable as they await death."

He sighs, "Not that they have much time anyway. The Steel Wyverns told me that they're giving me until today - just a couple of hours - to bring them some stolen goods from the church, or to allow them access, and they've threatened to kill me and everyone in here. I don't suppose you lot would be able to help?"

Eventually, he shrugs, deciding his doesn't need anything else than his weapons and to win fights to praise Gorum.

From behind the mask, you can hear the Almsman breath a sigh of relief. "Oh, you spoke with Gandros? So, he made it out - thank heavens. The 'prince' as he likes to be called insisted on leaving, despite my insistence that he needed my care. Yes, if you can help me with the Steel Wyverns, I'll happily share with you what I know."

You have 2 hours to prepare. The only furniture in the sanctuary are the immovable sarcophagi. The Almsman takes the wounded and ill behind the double doors to the north (top of new map). Outside in the sewers, you find a small wooden bridge that can be used to reinforce the doors to the sanctuary. Let me know if you plan to do that.

Place yourselves where you would like to be on the new map.

Uthred prepares himself for battle and indeed does move the small wooden bridge to reinforce the doors to the sanctuary. He will do this unless someone stops him. He will then position himself behind one of the sarcophagi awaiting his intended foes.

@Krux, I'll say that casting increases the break DC by an additional +2.

With your positions decided, and the door reinforeced, you play the waiting game. Before long, laughter and footsteps can be heard approaching from the west. A voice calls out, “Almsman! What say you? Are you resisting or giving us what we want? I hope you’re resisting!”

You see door being tried by someone on the other side. "Oh, thought ya'd play hard to get! So we brought a little somethin' to let ourselves in!"

Here's where the scenario, as printed, is a little wacky. The thugs have portable rams, which the text states give them a "total effective strength check of +12 to break down the doors". However, my understanding of portable ram is different, especially in light of the way the stats are for these thugs. In this case, I'm going to run them as the scenario dictates.

Uthred's readied action is with his Comp Longbow out to plug the first one that walks through the door with an arrow, then drop his bow and start hacking away on the foes with his waraxe until either victorious or the valkyries descend to carry his soul up to ...wait wrong game. He readies his bow and hefts his axe...

Uses readied action wand to summon an Eagle for 3 rounds over the doorway to grant it higher ground. It has a 1 round casting time.

Wand Activation:
Activation: Wands use the spell trigger activation method, so casting a spell from a wand is usually a standard action that doesn't provoke attacks of opportunity. (If the spell being cast has a longer casting time than 1 action, however, it takes that long to cast the spell from a wand.) After two more tries, the doors to the sanctuary are broken, allowing Steel Wyvern thugs to breach the room. You can see that they are equipped similarly to the thugs you faced previously - with the long spiked chains.

However, as they enter the room, they're met with a force they hadn't bargained for. Marduk swings his long guisarme and whacks one of the thugs so hard the poor guy collapses immediately.

Uthred's Bow Attack: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7

Uthred takes a shot, but it goes wide.

Jessique enlarges Marduk the half-orc, making him extra-intimidating.

Krux waves his wand to make an eagle appear, but it hasn't happened quite yet. (since it is a full-round action)

From the back, you can hear a voice chanting, "We are the Steel Wyverns! You have no hope! We are the Steel Wyverns! You have no hope!..." The chanting seems to inspire courage in the remaining thugs.

They used up move actions to get into the sanctuary, after the standard action to break the door.

Danu very angrily swings at the thug, but the Steel Wyvern is just able to dodge the blow. The thug also is able to dodge the dangerous jet of acid that Serpentfang shoots. This anonymous thug's charmed life continues as he remains unscathed from Uthred's deadly waraxe.

Alright, so since I'm newer to GM-ing, I haven't come across a situation like Marduk's in this case. In re-reading the rules on combat and cover, it seems like the prone bard has cover from Marduk. So, I will direct his attack to the blue thug. If Marduk had room to 5-foot step, I would say he could reach the bard, but not as the map looks at the moment.

Marduk's guisarme cuts a wide swath of blood in the blue thug's chest - the poor man is not nearly as lucky as his companion.

Finally, the eagle finally ends red's good luck streak with a talon scratch and a nasty bite. The thug wipes some of the blood from his forehead before striking back at the bird.

Attack and damage rolls include inspire courage mods.
Spiked Chain: 1d20 + 1 + 1 ⇒ (18) + 1 + 1 = 20
Damage: 2d4 + 1 ⇒ (1, 4) + 1 = 6

The thug behind him stands up, takes a five-foot step and swings his spiked chain at Marduk, hoping to avenge his friend's grisly death.

Spiked Chain: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 7
Damage: 2d4 + 1 ⇒ (4, 2) + 1 = 7

Finally, the leader in the back stands up and tries to use his whip to disarm Uthred.

That's ok for me, I'm used to casters, so I don't really know what's supposed to happen. I'd say Marduk could attack the singer but with a cover of -2 (since Marduk is enlarged). Anyway, no prob for me, blue is deader than dead :p

Grunting and sweating, Marduk makes a 5' step back to hit the green thug. "AUSnדחכασχωἀσά!"
