Amir suddenly has a dagger in his hand which sails clumsily end over end past the imp to bounce off the wall and clatters to the floor. Faelar begins a battle call and enheartened, Kzrira again sends a deadly arrow at the imp. It curses the sharp shooter as it's immortal body rejects the arrow, but an oozing cut remains.
We'll see if Karethas takes an action and then resolve.
Karethas ibn Faradin |
Sorry, I was confused.
Karethas shrugs when he realizes that his magic is not going to be much use in this situation. "Sarenae protect me!" He moves in and awkwardly attempts to grab the smaller creature.
Move action: Move adjacant to the imp.
Standard action: GRAPPLE: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (3) + 0 = 3 (Probably provoking an AOO)
Kzrira Maiwith |
If the Imp is close enough to hit with my rapier, I will drop the bow, draw my rapier and attack. If I cannot reach it, then I will shoot again.
Die you flying rat.
Attack: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (19) + 6 = 25 --> +1 more if with bow
Damage:1d6 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 7 --> same for both weapons I think
Confirm Crit-if rapier: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (14) + 6 = 20
Damage: 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4
Sheik Voodoo |
Karethas leaps for the hovering imp falling far short and receiving a stinger in the cheek for his effort.
Karethas -2 hp and both Karethas and Faelar make a DC 13 Fort save or -2 Dex.
The flying devil dashes up to the ceiling and out the clerestory window before the old man or Kzrira can fire again.
Faelar Braegen |
I hold up the scroll that I managed to take from the creature, open it and begin reading it to see why it is so important to an Imp. What is on the scroll?
Linguistics to read the scroll 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (3) + 7 = 10
'It would seem you have had an encounter with that little Imp before. Not only did you have the perfect weapon for it, but you also knew it was an Imp before it had even showed itself. So how often does it come here and how often does it get what it wants?'
Diplomacy 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (11) + 7 = 18
Sheik Voodoo |
The scroll somewhat resembles Ancient Osiriani, but Faelar can’t make anything out of it. The merchant takes it back, ”Hey, does this look like a library? Give me that. Oh yes, I remember this one. Very old and very valuable… perhaps more valuable that I thought if Mechem Djal is after it.”
He rolls the scroll back up and stuffs it in his vest. Looking at Kzriri he nods, ”Yes, I’ve found silver bolts useful if there isn’t a priest around. I've kept them on hand ever since one of Mechem’s imps ran off with another priceless book. The blackguard keeps a score of the fiends around for his spying and thieving.”
Kzrira Maiwith |
Sir, who is this Mecham Djal of which you speak? And what was the scroll which he sought? You referred to him as the blackguard, I am not familiar with this term.
Faelar Braegen |
'I am sorry; my good sir, sometimes my thirst for knowledge overcomes me. But back to the previous topic; before the Imp attempted to steal your merchandise, Is there no lower you can go with the price for the 2 books? The sister of Xander is very distraught about the disappearance of her brother and these books might be able to comfort her slightly.'
Diplomacy 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (20) + 7 = 27
Sheik Voodoo |
Faeler-You can't use diplomacy on the same creature more than once in a 24 hour period and give me another Fort save DC 13 or -1 Dex (3/6 saves).
The old man shakes his head, "You are persistent. I'm sorry I can't do any better that that. Hey you'd better have a seat, fellow. You aren't looking so well."
Kzrira Maiwith |
Sir, while I understand your hesitance in allowing us to read your scroll, could you tell us the nature of the scroll. As we have explained, we are searching for people, including the elf Xander. If he was last seen here, perhaps this lowlife from the nightstalls would have information. And if he does not have information, perhaps we could intimidate him so that he no longer desires to steal from you.
.
Knowing what this Mecham is after might be very useful is helping us "persuade" him to give us the information we seek.
Diplomacy: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 7
Karethas ibn Faradin |
Voodoo I'll just give you all my saves now so I can roleplay Karethas's decline :-)
FORT SAVE: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (1) + 0 = 1(0 Base, +0 Con)
FORT SAVE: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (20) + 0 = 20(0 Base, +0 Con)
FORT SAVE: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (9) + 0 = 9(0 Base, +0 Con)
FORT SAVE: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (4) + 0 = 4(0 Base, +0 Con)
FORT SAVE: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (17) + 0 = 17(0 Base, +0 Con)
FORT SAVE: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (7) + 0 = 7(0 Base, +0 Con)
Not too bad.
Karethas watches the imp fly away while poking at the sting in his cheek. Note for the future: I should not try to grab creatures with claws and stingers. He listen's to the conversation intently, though he seems slightly unsteady on his feet. "You know Faeler, now that he mentions it, you do seem a bit pale...I don't feel so well myself. Now that I think of it, you and I were the only ones stung." Karethas' eyes widen a bit. "You don't suppose we were poisoned do you? I think we were. Oh, oh my!
Can Karethas make a check about the nature of Imp poison?
KNOWLEDGE PLANES CHECK:1d20 + 8 ⇒ (20) + 8 = 28(1 rank, +3 class skill, +4 Int) or perhaps
KNOWLEDGE NATURE CHECK:1d20 + 8 ⇒ (5) + 8 = 13(1 rank, +3 class skill, +4 Int)
Amir Awad Hajjir |
Mecham is a sorcerer, he may respond poorly to threats so we best be ready. I have had many dealings in the Nightstalls so I might get by with a friendly word or two. Though I must admit, unless this scroll holds some information that might lead to Zander I am unsure that the two tasks are linked. Do no get me wrong I have no love for thieves but surely there are other authorities who should look into this attempted theft?
Sheik Voodoo |
The imp's venom burns through Faelar and Karethas like hellfire, the persistent pain making movement difficult. It dies down a little after a few moments, but will take them a few days to totally recover.
Ok, imp poison has run its course with Faelar down -3 Dex and Karathas down -2 Dex. Karethas knows (through experience now) that imp poison is moderately strong and causes burning pain that effects your coordination and motor function, i.e. dexterity to the point that severe poisoning leads to total incapacitation. Proper first aid can alleviate some effects (a heal check DC 13 allows the victim a +4 to their Fort save).
The old man glares at Kzrira. "I've already told you all I know about your elf friend. Unless you wish to buy something, I'll now ask you to leave."
Kzrira Maiwith |
To the party: Well, if Mr. Unfriendly does not want any help, then he can chase down the imps and his rival Mecham himself. Faelar, you gonna buy the books back? Or should we try to get info on Xander and Haleen elsewhere?
Amir Awad Hajjir |
Amir shakes his head slighty and approaches the bookseller.
If you believe Mecham is a threat to you, perhaps my friends and I can help? This gentleman wants these books, you want this problem to go away, why not link our causes? We go to Mecham and attempt to discover his intentions, if we give you something of value or convince him to leave you alone perhaps we receive the books as payment?
Diplomacy if that helps:1d20 + 5 ⇒ (7) + 5 = 12 Yeah okay hopefully I am convincing without the help of THAT
Amir Awad Hajjir |
Amir turns to the group, Well? What of this arrangement? We step in and talk to Mecham, perhaps gain some information for our own devices, assist good Alondro here and we get the books. Is this satisfying? Amir strokes his moustache with a gleam in his eye as he looks the party over.
Karethas ibn Faradin |
Karethas strokes his beard for a moment, still wincing slightly. "As much as I want to procure these books, finding Xander is currently our stated goal. I think we need to focus on that, but I don't know what our next step should be since our irascible friend here, Alondro Tuzzi," Here Karethas bows to the old man,"has not had much in the way of information. I WOULD like to pursue this arrangement regarding Mecham later if you both would be able to help Mr. Braegen and myself."
Faelar Braegen |
'I must admit, I would like to feel better. I feel very uncoordinated and clumsy. Please just call me Faelar. I think helping this fine man' I wave a hand towards the store owner 'have a safe business, without the worry of theft would be advantageous. No only would we be able to purchase books from here, but also we can hand Xanders books back to Xilla. This should be able to give her a small amount of comfort until we are able to find him.'
Amir Awad Hajjir |
Ah but you see the Nightstalls are only open in the safety of shadow, we have hours still to look for this Xander and if we come up short an information broker like Mecham may be our last true hope of gaining any ground. I have the young boy who led us here also moving about the city talking to his other fellows who see much and are often ignored. But in the mean time where do we look? Do we know where Xander was staying or anything more about who he bought this "wayfinder" from? Should we go back and talk to his sister more hoping some forgotten detail has come to her?
Kzrira Maiwith |
Looking at the two wobbly men with whom she is now adventuring.
You guys really should try to avoid getting poked by poisonous devils. I learned a little about healing in my time guarding caravans and ships, let me see if I can help you.
Healing-Faelar: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (2) - 1 = 1
Healing-Karethas 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (12) - 1 = 11
Yikes, don't think I can help. Does anyone else know about healing.
Faelar Braegen |
'I am able to heal cuts, bruises and even some broken bones. But regaining my coordination is beyond my capabilities. I think we just need a couple of days for the poison to run its course. So maybe we should just carry on searching for Xander and hope that we get better while we are looking for him?'
Karethas ibn Faradin |
"Perhaps we should look for where he found the magical item he was looking to purchase? Apparently they are not common items, since he was so excited to find one. If Amir can use "the word on the streets", so to speak, to find out where this item was or is being sold then we can go inquire there." Karethas smiles widely, hoping on a consensus.
Amir Awad Hajjir |
It would be easier if Zander's sister could tell us where this merchant was. Did she mention it before? I do not recall her saying but surely she might know at least generally where Xander found this object?
Karethas ibn Faradin |
Well, then perhaps we can track down where he commonly gambled, or who he owed money to?
A few hours of gathering information would help with this, but that uses the skill Diplomacy which is not one of Karethas' strengths. I would gladly assist though.
Faelar Braegen |
'Well I could ask around and see what information I could gather. Also I just happen to have a Wayfinder of my own, do any of you know what one looks like? I figure if we all recognise them on sight, it might be easier to locate the trader who sold Xander his. As you said Karethas, they are not common and I think a trader might be proud of the fact that he had one and sold it for a lot of money. So maybe we should play on the traders pride?'
Amir Awad Hajjir |
Is this where we do the montage of the party haggling with the various people on the streets of Katapesh? Please tell me this is so!
On a more serious note can we all assist Faelar or would we need to do individual rolls for Diplomacy each?
Sheik Voodoo |
Is this where we do the montage of the party haggling with the various people on the streets of Katapesh? Please tell me this is so!
I just have to pick out the background music ; )
so your choice, you can assist someone or do you own info gathering.just let me know what you are looking for- wayfinder seller, Mecham's shop, likely gambling den, anything else. you could meet up again if necessary at the Golden Net.
Amir Awad Hajjir |
Hmmm maybe we should split up?a Pick two things we want to figure out and then break into pairs with Fealr and Amir as primary rolls and Karethas and Kzrira as the assist to each on respectively? How many things could we look for in the next few hours before we have to make our way to the Nighstalls?
Faelar Braegen |
'A pleasure to work with you Kzrira, which of the following would you like to try to find?
The wayfinder seller (Which would help us with locating Xander, hopefully)
Mecham's Shop (Which could help us win over the favour of Alondro and maybe receive some books as a reward)
The Gambling Den (Which would also help us locate Xander)
I would like to find out about all 3, so I shall leave the subject of our investigations up to you; my fair lady.'
Diplomacy for finding out about which ever Kzrira decides would be the best investigation path 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (15) + 7 = 22 (+2 for the Assistance, totalling 24 )
Kzrira Maiwith |
It is your call Faelar, my goal is finding out about Haleen, however if helping you find Xander first will speed this up, then I will do all we can to help you. I say the wayfinder seller first as that was where Xander would have gone after getting the money from the bookshop. Then the gambling den. I doubt we will find anything about Mecham for several hours, so we should leave that one for last.
Sheik Voodoo |
NOTE: Xander first spent the expedition money on the suspect wayfinder, then apparently sold his books to Alondro for some money and disapppeared. He may have been tempted to risk the money for a quick profit by gambling.
It takes the rest of the day, but eventually Faelar and Kzrira are directed to a large tent in the Lower City with a simple wooden sign hung over the entrance that says Jangley. Inside low tables are heaped with strange and exotic wares. A pair of what appears to be halfling brothers wander the aisles helpfully identifying the more mysterious items.
Karethas ibn Faradin |
I think Amir and Karethas' time would be best spent looking for the gambling den, but I will assist Amir either way. At the end of the montage we will focus on Amir and Karethas laughing, with Amir patting Karethas on the back.....and freeze!
DIPLOMACY: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (16) + 2 = 18
"Well Amir, I shall follow your lead on this one. After you my friend!"
