Ray peers at the lettering, but cannot decipher the language.
Jarlaxle casts a spell to comprehend obscure languages, and finds that the script reads, "Those that would dare believe they are strong enough to oppose us shall learn that their strength is their weakness and our weaknesses are our very strengths."
Kalkamedes walks toward the door in the eastern wall and begins bumping himself into the metal portal.
As the party examines the room, a hissing sound is heard, quickly followed by the appearance of a skunk, but of a skunk the size of a large wolf! It moves menacingly toward the party, its tail held high!

"Oh I say! That is rather too much..."
He then maneuvers around the statue, and takes a swing.

@Ray: Can I recommend Magic Missile? It is highly likely to take out the rest of the party on its next full attack, so taking it out ASAP seems like a good idea... especially since we have *no* healing left in the party (no-one has any potions or wands listed amongst their gear)...

Creat he puts his ear to the half-elf's chest.

As the trio checks on their fallen comrade, Kalkamedes continues to push at the big southern doors. His shoulders seem to slump slighty as he attempts to open the doors.
Saved! Going over the sceanrio to see if you had picked a potion of CLW somewhere, I see that I missed that there was a 4 player adjustment. The skunk should have had a young template thus reducing the damage to Jaraxle by 4, so he should be conscious and at 2 hp.

Suddenly, Jarlaxle's eyes flicker open, as he realises that he wasn't as hurt as he thought he was!
"That... was painful!"
FYI, we found a single Potion of CLW at the start.
He then gingerly moves over to the doors Kalkamedes is in front of, and inspects them for traps.

            Jarlaxle shrugs.
"Well, unless you want to wait a couple of hours for me to get my wind back, I don't see much in the way of other options - we only have one healing potion between us, and we may need that to stabilise someone..."

"Well, unless anyone has any better ideas..."
How about going outside, chopping down a tree, and then using it has a sort of 'battering ram' to push the door open?
Before doing that, however...
Jarlaxle thoroughly searches the room, looking for an 'off' switch.
Perception 'Take 20' = 27.

Jarlaxle seaches the room, but does not find an "off" switch.
However, he does take notice of the statue in the room. He notes that the statue seems to be holding a wand, that is removeable, and there is an inscription on the base of the statue.

            I imagine that is a no ;-)
"Well, it may not be the most elegant solution, but I think using a tree trunk might be our best bet for opening those doors..."
Jarlaxle then goes outside to look for a suitable tree to (slowly) cut down.

Working together, the party manages to cut down the tree and haul it back to the edifice. Dragging it inside the building, everyone combines efforts and eventually manages to knock open the doors!
Through the doors you find, suspended by thick chains, a massive metal cage shaped like a demon’s head hangs over a dark shaft with no bottom in sight. The cage’s door—by all appearances a menacing maw, filled with incisor-like fangs—hangs open to the west. There, a narrow bridge spans the short distance between the ledge and the cage. A small console on the north edge of the bridge bears a single lever. The lever has three positions and currently sits in the middle position.
Kalkamedes shuffles into the cage and stands silently.
