Theron gets Entangle then. I was exhausted yesterday so forgot this but Kitt can't change his spell.
When preparing spells for the day, a wizard can leave some of these spell slots open. Later during that day, he can repeat the preparation process as often as he likes, time and circumstances permitting. During these extra sessions of preparation, the wizard can fill these unused spell slots. He cannot, however, abandon a previously prepared spell to replace it with another one or fill a slot that is empty because he has cast a spell in the meantime.
It is ok because Enlarge is handy with reach.

challenge: 1d6 ⇒ 1
You slowly go through the cave, taking notes of the various pictograms as you advance. The cave doesn't branch, but does wind its way deeper into the Kotos mountains.
The narrow tunnel twists and turns for several hundred feet before slowly opening to a wider passage. A large hole spans the cave’s width and stretches ten feet down the path.
The pit is at least a year old.
About ten feet down the pit is filled with water.
GM Aerondor
|
The water level is ten foot down. What ever is at the bottom is a further ten foot under the water. Too far away for a javelin to reach.

"We need a way across this pit. Anyone have rope? I could use it to climb down and investigate then climb up the other side and we could string the rope across."
Kitt Theos
|
What do we roll for a hide skill check? Edit: guide into hide.
"I happen to have my grappling hook and some rope. Could this be some sort of trap?" Kit passes his rope to Liming and cast light on to the rope if needed.
Liminy Spickett
|
"Someone dug this so it could be yes. One way to find out. This is a good time to ready any ranged weapons."
I'll put a few knots into the rope if it isn't already. Secure the rope on our side of the pit via the grapple then climb down taking 10 for a 15.
On the possibly wrong assumption that the water is calm and unoccupied I'll also take 10 for a 15 swim check to dive down and investigate.
| Karnak Garess |
Karnak takes out his compass, straight edge and pen and draws a quick sketch of path the cave has taken so far. He seals the book as best he can from water as the party works their way tofind a convenient way across the pit.

The water is calm and unoccupied...except for...

"I found a cloak. Unhook the grapple. I'll toss it up to the other side, Climb up, then look around for something to anchor the rope."
Take 10 for a 15 on climb. Take 10 for a 15 on Perception to find something to anchor the rope to. If it is hard to spot it won't be big enough to help.
Kitt Theos
|
Kitt unhooks the grapple as Liminy throws up the cloak. Then Kitt picks up the cloak and examines it thoroughly with his eyes, hands, an occasional smell and lick in an attempt to try to identify if it has magic properties.

Am I doing it right? Am I allowed to take 20 for this check?
Liminy Spickett
|
You need the cantrip Detect Magic in order to find out if something is magical. You can take 20 on checks that require doing the same task over and over again but it takes 20 times as long. And it doesn't work for things like knowledges where you either know something or you don't. Had we discussed spells before we started I would have recommended Detect Magic and Read Magic in place of Flare and Resistance. And odds are you would have taken my advice. Of course this is an intro scenario so if Aerondor was feeling very generous...
GM Aerondor
|
If you want to have detect magic as one of the cantrips you have memorized that is fine. I don't think you can take 20 on spellcraft, as if you fail, you can't try again until the next day. You can take 10. But with that roll...Just let me know which cantrip you want to trade out for detect magic
Kitt identifies the cloak as a cloak of resistance +1.
There is nothing really obvious to anchor the rope to, but by using the corners of the pit for bracing, Limney can easily enough climb out on the other side. Searching around he finds a plank just around the corner, out of sight.
GM Aerondor
|
The team carefully crosses the plank, and heads further on into the cave system.
The tunnels continue on, leading deeper beneath the Kortos Mounts until they eventually open into a large cavern. What must have once been beautifully carved reliefs and inscriptions have since weathered heavily, their features dulled and softened to the point that it is hard to distinguish what each once depicted. A wide tunnel exits the cavern on its far side, and blue-burning torches line the passageway’s walls.

Looking around the carvings they seem someone familiar, like you have seen them before. However most are worn beyond any real recognition.
If you could each give me a knowledge(history or religion), linguistics, appraise or perception checks. Appraise or Perception are at -2. If you speak Aquna or Azlanti you get +2 for each. If you did a perception check above, just repeat the number back so I have them all together. Knowledge and linguistics are trained only.

Galahad recognises that the pictures are similar to some of the stories from Aroden's "History and Future of Humanity"
Kitt then points out several of the guides of Aroden. The Craftsman, The Hunter, The Tailor and the Thief.
The Craftsman is depicted creating shoes, pots, jewelry, and other moveable goods, referencing Aroden’s delight at seeing his people express their ingenuity in creating new products from raw materials.
The Hunter is depicted slaying a giant serpentine creature and then parading a trophy through the city streets—a sign to all humanity that the wilds are safe to inhabit once the monsters are slain.
The Tailor is depicted sewing together a long cloth of featuring many patterns that wraps around a city like a moat, referencing Aroden’s proclamation that when the fate of all peoples is woven together, it shall be humanity’s greatest strength.
The Thief is depicted stealing a gem from a shop while whispering a prayer, an allusion to a passage saying that larceny—though illegal—is a form of praise, for anything worth stealing is also worthy of praise for its craftsmanship.

All of the remaining carvings are far too worn to be deciphered.
You have found out everything about the carvings that you can.
Kitt Theos

Kitt takes notes as well but not wanting to fall behind on the adventure, he closely follows Shadraz and illuminates the cave with his sword.

There is a tunnel lined with blue torches...
The soft light of the surrounding fungus mixes with the flickering glow of the nearby torches to reveal a grand chamber. A large pool of water along the chamber’s southern edge reflects the blue and green radiance to illuminate the massive stalactites that cling to the ceiling overhead. Two other tunnels branch off from this area, leading to the east and west.
Rising up from the pool is a column of rock with steeply sloped sides and a flat top, as if someone had sawn off the top of a massive stalagmite. A miniature city carved from this same stone occupies nearly the entire surface. Tiny trinkets such as ancient coins, polished semiprecious stones, and ornately braided loops of string are scattered throughout the diorama, and pale cave frogs clamber atop it. The smooth cavern floor is covered in gravel and pebbles along the edge of the pool, and several foot-long centipedes prowl among the gravel in their search for prey.
Kneeling in the water in a figure with his back to you.

Kitt cautiously approachapproaches figure in the water with sword in hand.
"Hello!"

Assuming you are not wading into the pool yet
The figure doesn't respond to your calls. Maybe it is a statue... no surely it moved, just a little.
Shadraz

Shadraz smiles. "Ah, water at last." He strides in, heedless of the stranger, and submerges himself completely for a short time before coming up for air and sighing in happiness.

The figure turns as Shadraz emerges in the water. He pauses for a moment, taking in the other members of the team.
Slowly he stands.
"Hello" he says. "I am Uori. Who are you, and what are you doing here?"
He directs his words to Shadraz. They are slightly oddly accented and spoken very precisely.

What I thought were ugly scribbles appear to be artistic renderings of life in a city. Possibly during the time of Aroden. In fact this may be a temple of Aroden. I'll leave it to those with better eyesight then mine to copy them.
I'll stand back and let people jibber jabber. Keeping an eye on things, Especially Shadraz to make sure nothing in the water tries to eat him.

Shocked at the spectacle at hand, Kitt jumps into the water in attempt to stop the mockery! And intercedes the discussion
"What my ally meant is, we are swimming! Swimming for adventure. We are pathfinders, we enter the cave to search for truth! May we enquire about your presence here?"
GM Aerondor

The pool is quite shallow, so no need to swim!
A diplomacy check with your next posts may be helpful
"The waters are here for all to partake of. Ideally in a serene manner." he says to Shadraz.
Turning to Kitt he bows his head in apology. "Sorry, I missed what you said."
