The monk loads, pulls, and draws in two quick, fluid motions. The first arrow whistles past the Pathfinders and embeds itself in the viking's shoulder. He yells in pain, almost dropping to the floor, but somehow stays on his feet. The second arrow bounces off his armor to splinter at his feet.
Behind them, Yjalk bellows, "Stay your feet. Concentrate your blows on the elf!" His companions nod in grim acquiescence.
Drawing his huge greatsword in both hands, rage filling his face, he takes one hand off his pommel and points at Xull. "You!" he closes his fist and sticks out his thumb before gesturing towards his chest with his thumb. "Me!"

Korasu sighs. "Ah, it is unfortunate that we could not resolve this through conversation rather than blades." He perks up, "Luckily, we have the means to Speak with the Dead!

Xûll has reach, does he get an AoO when the green guy (Yjalk) closes in? Or was he considered flat-footed despite kind of initiating combat? EDIT: Uncanny dodge. Can't be caught flat-footed. So... pretty sure he does get the AoO...

Feel free to take your AoO if you like Pooka. I don't mind if you refuse to for honorable reasons, though. Xûll is more of a merchant than a knight, so he's perfectly happy to take a better position rather than satisfy some kind of code.

Xull - yes AoO
Moments before
As Yjalk closes in, Xull swipes out with his Nodachi, slicing the man across the chest. Ignoring the grievous wound, he still misses the raging Shaonti.
Present
Korasu's blade sinks in between Yjalk's ribs, causing a massive wound. Yjalk yells at the Pathfinders, "Cowards! Can you not see that I have challenged one of you to a fight, yet you need assistance from others? You have no honor. I should expect nothing less,"
From behind, the woman begins to speak in a loud, clear voice.
The Lay of Helgi
"Trauðr em ek, systir, trega þér at segja,því at ek hefi nauðigrnifti grætta;fell í morgunund Fjöturlundibuðlungr, sá er varbeztr í heimiok hildingumá halsi stóð."
Inspired by the woman's song, the Vikings' faces sets with new determination. The Viking that took the arrow from Amarok steps back and downs a potion. After drinking it he looks a little better.

Hmmm. I could cure Xull. But he does seem to be having a really good time getting all sliced up. Bloodragers! I think there is something mentally unbalanced about them. Besides, that whole challenge thing looks really personal. Nope. Got a better idea. Doubt if it will work, but this is why I memorized the spell. AND it fits into the new philosophyI I'm trying out. Dang! I should have cast that bull's strength on Xull.
Warpac's action will be to step back and cast a hold person on the Skald, Signe, With a DC 15.

"Singing about killing heroes, eh?" Xûll shakes his head, "Well, you'll soon realize that not everything goes the way it does in tales... sometimes, heroes know how to fight!"
Xûll lashes out at the man, and then steps back a little to force him into a disadvantageous position (should he wish to continue the fight).

No offense Warpac, but these caltrops are really messing with me. Mobility is really reduced... unless I want to take a chance of having Luna step on some.
I'll pass on the AoO in the hopes that he doesn't take one against me since I am about to run past him.
Ok, just wanted to read up on Caltrops so I can make sure I know what I am doing. The Caltrops would make an attack roll against Luna, and her barding wouldn't count. So her effective AC against the Caltrops would be AC18. However, Pooka also gets to roll a ride check once per round if she gets hit. Whatever his ride check is effectively becomes her AC (ie, if his ride check exceeds the attack roll, the attack misses) So I am going to spoiler a ride check just in case the caltrops attack roll hits. Hopefully this isn't to complicated.
Pooka takes a hard look at the scattered caltrops in front of him, gritting his teeth. He looks at the Ulfen on the path, and the gaggle of his comrades behind him.
I can't do anything stuck up here!
His heart begins to pound as a deep concern passes over his face. He must guide Luna through the devious metal prongs and hope she doesn't step on one. He swallows the lump in his throat and leans over to whisper to his pooch.
"It's ok girl. Let's knock that guy in front of us on his keister. I'll get you past this stuff. Full speed girl."
Will post assuming that they make it through...
As Pooka guides his precious mount through the minefield, he finally allows his eyes to focus on the hulking brute in front of him.
"Let's do this girl!" He shouts as he stands in his stirrups and leans forward, lending his weight into her rush.
Overrun attempt against yellow henchman: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (4) + 9 = 13 Reminder that Luna has imp. overrun, so she doesn't provoke, and yellow henchman cannot choose to avoid.
Oof... that probably doesn't pass, which means we don't make it through his square. If somehow we do pass, I intended to run all the way across the bridge. I will let you move the token based on success or failure. Sorry if this is confusing and making you do more work GM!

No offense Warpac, but these caltrops are really messing with me. Mobility is really reduced... unless I want to take a chance of having Luna step on some.
Please bring that up IC after the fight. We can have some fun arguing over the tactics of a dwarf and those of a cavalier.

GM_TheBobJones |

Warpac casts his divine spells at the woman who is telling such an inspirational story.
Will save DC 15: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (16) + 3 = 19
Xull meanwhile cuts down the large Ulfen with nary a scratch on his person. Yjalk drops is greatsword and falls to the floor, bleeding from three massive gashes. He is far enough form death to easily save should you choose to.
Pooka kicks Luna in the haunches to spur the trusty canine forward. He curses foolish dwarves as she nimbly avoids the caltrops.
Caltrops: 1d20 ⇒ 1
She tries to overrun that man but fails, stopping her forward momentum.
Seeing their leader fall in combat and not a single opponent take a hit, the northmen and woman yell, "Halt! We yield!"
The weapons drop with a clatter.
"Let me heal Yjalk. Please." Sigen adds in such a quiet voice as compared to her last outburst.

Toorin readies to cast Burning Disarm at anyone who draws or picks up a weapon. "No tricks," he says and watches her closely.
If anyone tries to use a weapon with metal in it, the reflex save DC to drop the weapon before taking damage is 15. The damage is 2d4 ⇒ (2, 1) = 3.

Pooka eyes the woman carefully, not ready to lower his weapon.
Seeing the others have the attacking Ulfen under control, he looks down at the man he skewered.
Don't think a potion is bringing that guy back...
Heal Check, just in case, untrained: 1d20 ⇒ 4
Not wanting to deal with the reprocussions of his brutal attack just yet, he turns his remaining ire and battle adrenaline on the dwarf behind him.
"In what world does 'Mind the Charge Lanes' ever mean 'Throw Caltrops down so the halfling's dog can stick her paw'?" He curls his lips down and snorts through his nose. As sheer luck would have it, the bristling canine next to him snorts at the same time.
"You think Desna has cursed you with bad luck? I'm a halfling, I know a thing or two about luck. I'd say you are doing a pretty good job of making your own bad luck. Explore, Report, Cooperate. Focus on that last one a bit more."
Pooka huffs and paces back and forth, chastising the dwarf until his bluster and adrenaline have all run out.
"You gunna clean these up so no one steps on any?"
You asked for it ;)

![]() |

As swiftly as it began, combat seemed to be over and Amarok returns his arrow to the quiver on his hip and holds his bow at his side. He moves forwards slightly and nods to the Skald amongst the group.
"Of course you may heal him, but no our fight is done"
He turns to Pooka as he rounds on Warpac.
"Caltrops are a good defensive technique for holding an area and letting the Archer have a clear path, as you are so adamant on keeping then free from blockages, what about my arrows flight path?"
His comment is as serene as ever, but holds a hint of humour within.
Man I hate doorway fights!

![]() |

"Tut tut tut!" Xûll, still enraged holds his nodachi out at arm's length toward the woman as she approaches, "Surrender all of your gear first. We will decide after what, if anything to give back to you. Whatever claim you think you had on this place is gone now. It was always ours by rights, and now it is ours by might. I would see what you have taken from it. Now!" A small fleck of blood and saliva flies the ten feet from Xûll's mouth, over his abnormally large and muscular arms, to land on her face.
"As for you, Amarok," Xûll calls back to their archer with a wink, "I figured you knew how to manage a precise shot into melee! Still too many bodies in the way for you? I tried to step out of the way, but my one just fell over after I tapped him. He must have been out of sorts."
Wasting an additional rage round. If she doesn't comply... well, we'll see. If she does, I'll end the rage after that.

![]() |

Not at all disturbed by the halflings outburst, Warpac replies calmly.
"You had your charge lane. You even used it. The hallway provided a useful choke point, particularly with the caltrops as additional reinforcements. The tactics of running about by yourself through the midst of the enemy and back seems slightly short of insane to me. They were the aggressors, not us. They had to come at us and at most field two of theirs against four of ours had we held the line PLUS we have an expert archer."
"Friend Pooka, I think maybe your ego is getting the better of you."
At this Warpac is laughing inside at both Pooka and himself, as that is the very issue he had been dealing with all this time, with a deity doing the correcting. Who knows! Perhaps this was the VERY moment she was waiting for. Perhaps the lesson was meant to be shared and Pooka the true recipient. Ah, the mind of gods and goddesses.
"It was not necessary for you to wheel all about the field charging through enemy lines delivering crushing blows in this case. We had an excellent defensive situation and we used it well."

GM_TheBobJones |

"Yes, yes, whatever you wish," Singe speaks as she moves over to Yjalk. Bending down, she begins casting a spell.
spell: 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (7) + 3 = 10
Yjalk comes to, still laying prone on the ground. "What? Where is my sword? We must kill them. I need the magic item to slay the linnorm,"
"Hush, Yjalk. You, we, were bested. Now they want our gear. Best do what they say." She glances at the Pathfinders.
"Bested, and not a scratch. This ... troubles me. Long have I sailed form the shores of the Linnorm lords and few times have I been on the losing side of a fight. Yet I shall live from this one and I am grateful."
Before any more exchanges can occur, still breathing heavy from the fierce fight moments ago the room begins to tremble. Arms splayed out to steady their vibrating flooring, they look around for the source of the disturbance.
Equally as stunned are the vikings, who use the momentary distraction to beat a hasty retreat. GM thing.
Meanwhile the brazier in the center of the table ignites with emerald fire, and a spectral form rises from the flames to attack. From the corner of the room, a shambled mass of dead humanity forms into a unholy construction that walks like a newborn colt towards the Pathfinders. It is a carrion golem, like the one you faced in the courtyard

Pooka takes in the sight of the undead and the appiration, breathing in sharply.
"We can finish this conversation later, and then also talk about your use of the ghost salts and how you have robbed our archer of 10 arrows with which to kill this thing in favor of only one of your attacks. Do not waste it on anything else, Warpac, attack that ghost first!"
Pooka wheels Luna around, easy to face this new threat
seriously, don't attack anything until you hit the ghost first. One successful attack uses up the ghost salts, making them useless after that. That is why they would have been better on amaroks arrows. We are probably lucky you haven't hit anything since that point as it is...

Yes you are still in a continuous combat since this fight is a continuation of the Viking fight. This is round 3. Since initial buffs - 5 rounds exploring + round 3 of combat = Round 8.
Xull moves over and returns the carrion golem to a pile of putrid, rotting flesh. It has stench, but like Korasu, I am not going to roll it since you went before it. Works in my mind.

It will weaken your resolve and start you on the road to madness yourself. Do not try to make sense of its gibbering." Toorin runs around behind it to get a clear shot.

Toorin, out of spells that can hurt the allip, steps up, sword in hand to battle it with his sword. He sends a surge of arcane energy into the sword to enhance the damage it does and positions himself opposite Warpak to add to the creatures difficulty at evading his attack.
Longsword, magic weapon, Arcane strike, flank: 1d20 + 3 + 2 ⇒ (13) + 3 + 2 = 18
The magic weapon does not enhance the attack bonus, since it doesn't stack with MWK, but it will add to the damage and the weapon is magic for the purposes of dealing half damage to the allip.
damage, magic weapon, arcane strike: 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3
Piffle.

Seemingly cursed by Warpac's terrible luck, Amarok breathes deeply before drawing two more Salted arrows and firing them off in rapid succession.
Flurry, Deadly Aim, PBS,: 1d20 + 6 + 1 ⇒ (13) + 6 + 1 = 20 for damage: 1d8 + 5 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 5 + 1 = 7
Flurry, Deadly Aim, PBS,: 1d20 + 6 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 6 + 1 = 12 for damage: 1d8 + 5 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 5 + 1 = 11

Korasu reels back under the undead assault, bringing his blade in an upward swing as he flips backward, with avian grace, disappearing completely within several steps!
Attack, GMW: 1d20 + 8 + 2 ⇒ (18) + 8 + 2 = 28
Damage, GMW: 2d8 + 6 + 2 ⇒ (4, 2) + 6 + 2 = 14
confirm?: 1d20 + 8 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 8 + 2 = 18
crit damage?: 2d8 + 6 + 2 ⇒ (2, 5) + 6 + 2 = 15
Acrobatic tumble: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (6) + 12 = 18
Standard action to attack, use Acrobatics to move half speed, (15'), after 10' Vanish
That'll do, dice. That'll do. I hope.

GM_TheBobJones |

Toorin inexpertly lashes out with his longsword, slicing off a bit of the allip's essence, while only one of Amarok's arrow flies through the allip's body. Korasu again slashes out and seems to connect with something vital in the swirling miasma of the allip's 'body'.
A small part of the allip actualy floats away after Korasu's brutal attack and envelops Korasu before he has a chance to tumble away. 2 for 2 on critting when the monsters have special crit abilities! :)
Korasu Fortitude: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (17) + 2 = 19
Wisdom damage: 1d3 ⇒ 1
Coughing and sputtering, he manages able to stumble backwards.
Unable to see Korasu, the allip focuses it's attention on Amarok, but cannot get there. It slowly moves forward before reaching out to Warpac on it's way. Again, it's arm shoots out more forcefully than the pathfinder would think for a creature like this.
Touch attack vs touch AC: 1d20 + 4 + 1d6 ⇒ (13) + 4 + (5) = 22
wisdom damage: 1d4 ⇒ 4
Warpac Will: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (14) + 9 = 23+2 poison, spells, and spell like abilities
Warpac is able to shake off the moment of insanity that the allip's touch gives him. His dwarven stoicism is enough to keep his wits about him.

Warpac uses a swift action to add another bonus to his blade using sacred weapon. He chooses Ghost Touch of course. This about as buffed as he gets. If only he can hit!
"We shall see if my luck has turned now! Be with me Desna!"
Power attacking with Dwarven Waraxe, +4/+4 from buffs.
Power attacking with Dwarven Waraxe: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (11) + 9 = 20
Damage: 1d10 + 11 ⇒ (1) + 11 = 12 with full damage vs. incorporeal.

GM_TheBobJones |

Wapac swings his mighty axe, hoping his patroness turns his luck around.
He is rewarded as he feels his axe bite deep into the incorporeal flesh. Vapor hisses as the salts rub off of the axe head as it slices through the allip.
The allip begins to dissolve into a fine mist, and rises up, diffusing in the air above.
Combat over - nicely done. No Pathfinder took a hit in two CR 6 encounters. Either I suck or you guys are good.
With the threats over, Korasu and Amarok begin to look at the ruby shards. The others peer over their shoulders and before Toorin shoulders his way to the front. A few magical spells here and there, and they are certain that this is the remains of a Sage Jewel.

Warpac goes to collect his caltrops.
Waiting until Pooka regains his senses, he gruffly announces, probably in the midst of collecting his unexpectedly offensive barrier.
"I still think that laying caltrops down in front of an oncoming enemy is normally the right thing to do, but after consideration I understand your point of view. You are a mightily armored cavalry unit. Not something I'm very familiar with. I had thought when you said you wanted a charge lane that you wanted a way to get TO the enemy. I did not realize that you would want to repeatedly charge THROUGH the enemies. I still think that slightly insane, but I've heard how effective cavalry can be in open terrain and you seem to be able to reproduce the same effect even in crowded rooms. Perhaps due to your advantageous size. In any case, I surely don't want to injure Luna, and it seems that you will charge through the enemy, caltrops or no, so I will pocket these until a time when I am with more like-minded defenders.

Xûll deflates, his arms pulling inwards as his muscles reknit to form around the shortened bones. The Shoanti smiles the most affable smile he can manage in the circumstances, "I personally also want them to rush in... just let me see them try to get past my swinging blade to hit me when my arms are that long. That strategy works well for parties with a range.
"Well, we can have plenty of time to discuss tactics once we're out of here," Xûll claps his hands together, "Let's grab what we need and figure out what to do next. This isn't exactly the remains of the diamond sage, but do you think it's worth contacting Amenopheus with what we've found to ask for further instructions? I just wish we had more than one use out of that stone..."

Amarok examines the shards closely and sighs deeply, not the find they were hoping for but a significant one none the less. He turns to the party and speaks his thought process.
"Before we do anything so hasty as to contact the Sapphire Sage, mayhaps we apply the ring of truth to these three corpses in case they know more of the jewel? Maybe who broke it or how? If it can be restored?"

![]() |

Toorin looks to the north to see what happened to the Ulfen party. "They appear to have scarpered off. Let's double check that we have everything. If we left anything alone for fear it was cursed, let's get it into a bag and carry it back for more careful testing. I think there was a scimitar with the water elemental and some bracers on the table in this room. When we're sure there's nothing else to uncover, we might as well contact the sapphire sage and report what we have found."

![]() |

"I sure hope this is not the sage jewel. I don't think Anyone's going to be happy with a broken gem. Even if it COULD be physically repaired I fear any enchantment will be permanently broken. Then again, the magic of the gem was a bit strange."
"In any case, since this is all we found and there are no other leads, it would seem prudent to contact the saphire sage as Toorin suggests."
Of course the GM already told us that this was a sage jewel, but how does one recognize a sage jewel? Since this is the last encounter does that mean the rubble blocking the stairs east leads nowhere? Warpac was going to clear it and take a look.

![]() |

Pooka huffs his frustration away, not answering Warpac right away when he admits his mis-judgement of tactics.
Let he who has not screwed up cast the first stone? With a grimace, he approaches the dwarf and reaches out his hand.
"I just hope we can find a situation soon to show you the wisdom of that decision to keep those in your pack. One where Luna and I can cut back and forth across the line, decimating our enemies foothold while you roll up their line from the inside. Explore, Report, Cooperate, right? We still have more work to do. We have the broken shards of a Sage's jewel, but no sage."
"I hesitate to use the device when we can only use it once, however at first glance it looks like we are at a dead end. Let's take a moment to take stock of what we have, and what we know before we do something we can't undo."
Its late, I want to re-read and review the clues we have before I offer an opinion on whether or not we should use the geode now.

![]() |

Complete and total meta here... but unless we get a negative boon for using it that says we can't use it in the 3rd scenario (and I saw no such thing on the 1st chronicle)... we should be golden, right? Total meta. Just saying. 'Tis the nature of PFS. In character, Amenopheus probably just sends us a new one.
"I have little skill at deciphering the clues we have found here," notes Xûll, "And I will not say anything to sway whether or not it is worthwhile using the geode now, because I simply do not know. However, I am happy to aid in a more comprehensive search of this place. Come, let us uncover everything we can and spend the time required to collate the information we gather."
GM: Unless we are to face an impending doom or something of the like, is there any issue with taking 20 to search the more interesting rooms?

GM_TheBobJones |

You have covered everything. I think I missed a bracer in this room, but it does effect the plot. Lengthy post later today.

Okay. Now taking suggestions for a message to send to Amenopheus using the geode! That presupposes we use it, but we might as well figure it out. John, would you be so kind as to link to this Google doc from the campaign tab?
