Varrel
Varrel jumps on behind Graxer on a summoned MOUNT and rides along, less skillfully but able to keep up.
Once out of sight of the castle he finally speaks.
You were noted Ashe, one of the maidens went inside as soon as you laid hands on your uncle. The queen has shown her hand and will know of the blow she has struck you. And if she can take a quarrel to the head and survive she is more powerful than we thought.
Asherick Whiteplume
Ashe is silent a few momenets as they ride, but eventually comments, "..there is indeed some... unholy power that sustains her. My Uncle is a deadshot! Were he to, at point blank range, shoot anyone ~ mortal, in the head.. they would be in the boneyard right now! We shall find out more when I have time to examine Ileosa's blood that is still upon the quarrel in my uncle. But what disturbs me even more is this stranger, an apparent spellcaster, Togomor... Illeosa has 'appointed' Seneschal!?! The Queen has NO Authority to disband the Sable Company.. she has NO Authority to appoint the Seneschal... that rests with the Field Marshal of the Korvosan Guard! Where is Seneschal Kalepopolis?"
He grimaces, "Apparently the Harrow have spoken.. indeed, The Fiend, we are suffering Many losses to calamity... The Sable Company, the Korvosan Guard... my uncle... the rule of law... I wonder what else we have yet to realize we have lost as casualties to this wicked regime?"
Asherick Whiteplume
My information comes from Pathfinder Chronicles: Guide to Korvosa Chapter 3: People, Government, p.35
"Despite the pledge of fealty, the commandant of the Sable Company does not answer to the city's leader, but rather to the Castle Korvosa's seneschal. This arrangement gives the company's commandant freedom to act on behalf of the city against a tyrannical ruler, but it potentially puts him at odds with the powerful field marshal of the Korvosan Guard."
"By charter amendment, in order to maintain this balance of power, the commandant must be at least three generations removed from a common ancestor of the city's leader. The current leader of the Sable company, Commandant Marcus Thalassinus Endrin, is first in line to become the new seneschal of Castle Korvosa, should Seneschal Neolandus Kalepopolis retire or die."
And...
"In honor of the city's founder and namesake, the Korvosan Guard calls its leader the Field Marshal. The City's ruler selects the Field Marshal from among the senior officers in the guard, who then reports directly to the monarch. Because the Korvosan Guard has a tie with the church of Abadar, though, the ruler cannot remove the Field Marshal without agreement from the high priest. Frequently, the high priest has additional input into the appointment of the Field Marshal, making recommendations for or against candidates."
and finally...
"An early charter amendment gave the castle's seneschal complete control over the entirety of the pyramid 'and all structures built on it and all tunnels discovered or dug within it.' Later, when the Headquarters of the Sable Company moved into the castle, a new amendment made the seneschal the liaison between the city's leader and the company's commandant. The Seneschal can veto the nomination of any applicant to the post of Sable Company commandant."
"When a seneschal dies or retire, the field marshal of the Korvosan Guard chooses his replacement from among the leadership of the Sable comapny. Typically, the company's commandant becomes the new seneschal, although a promising junior officer occasionally leapfrogs into the limited but powerful position."
"Those close to him expect the current seneschal, Neolandis Kalepopolis, to step down in 3 years, on the 50th anniversary of his appointment to the post. Many see his very close and mentor-like relationship with Commandant Marcus Thalassinus Endrin as the most obvious sign of this."
This is of course assuming the Adventure Path has not changed things...
Graxer Firebeard
"It seems she has said to hell with the rules and is just going to do whatever she wants.. She also seems to have beefed up as well.. Not many could take that bolt to the temple and live.. I say we have a talk with Cressida Kroft asap as well.."

Ebon Wings, your legal knowledge confirms Ashe's information.
This volume of the AP actually opens with a foreword that mentions that Pathfinder Chronicles: Guide to Korvosa is the basis of the 'Korvosa' that is used as the setting for the AP...
So, are you going to the Cathedral of Pharasma or to see Field Marshall Cressida Kroft - she's nowhere to be seen, but if you ask around she apparently went back to the Citadel with all haste once the Grey Maidens came out in force.
Asherick Whiteplume
To the Cathedral. Ashe intend's VERY much to speak with the Field Marshal... but right now...duty , not only to his Uncle and Endrin family... but also to the Sable Company 'even though Ashe is not a member' must come first! He NEEDS to speak with a member of the Sable Company and deal with his uncle's safety Now... before more things spiral out of control. Ashe wants to see to the preservation of the Sable Company... before Ileosa moves to destroy the order forever - which is why Ashe asked Majebnko to catch the attention of any Hippogriff rider he should spot in an aerial patrol and request they gather at the Cathedral of Pharasma where he is taking the body of the Commandant.
Ashe rides hard and as quickly as is prudent to reach the Cathedral Fortress of Pharasma.
To his companions he comments, "I'll explain the moment we are safely in the Cathedral Fortress ...but not right now.. I must act quickly... to preserve the future!"
Entering the Grey District Ashe heads straight for the Temple Fortress of Pharasma. Not bothering to dismount Ashe rides right up to the main door and knocks on the closed gate with his armored fist, "Hail Guardian's of the Quiet Dead! It is I, Asherick Whiteplume...bearing the body of slain Commandant Endrin... I need Entry at once... Grave matters are a foot, and time is of the essence!"
Ashe looks to the Cathedral's heights and the surrounding skies looking for any approaching Sable Company aerial riders...
Graxer Firebeard
Once we figure out she's not there I assume we'll make our way to the Citadel..
Asherick Whiteplume
Ashe is not demanding that the Justicars go with him to the Cathedral of Pharasma... But he is not going to carry his uncle around like a sack of grain-meal from his horse! He intends to have his Uncle, at the very least, laid with all due honor to rest 'In State' - not buried... that remains to be seen.
Graxer Firebeard
Grazer wanted to go where the Field Marshal was and thats here.. Well at least thats what everyone thought.. Upon realizing she was not he would suggest they head to the Citadel..
He'll also cast an extended heroism and an extended percieve cues..
Asherick Whiteplume
Ashe will nod in acceptance, "I wish to lay my Uncle at rest where I know his body will not be defiled! But also.. I want that Quarrel from his body... Illeoa's blood is STILL on the shaft of it! I want to analyze it... to find out if she is indeed still Ileosa or some 'Fiend' merely posing as her!"
"If you must go... I'll meet you as soon as I'm free to do so at Citadel Volshynek. I must speak to a Sable Company Marine... action must now be taken to Immediately secure the Hippogriff Hatchery of the Sable Company before the Queen attempts to seize it! Lest the Order be destroyed forever... I'll NOT let that Happen!!!"
Varrel
Varrel lays a hand on Ashe's shoulder.
We will get admittance Ashe, the queen would not storm the Temple of Pharasma. We will at least get your uncle properly cared for. Then we will find the others and see about forming a plan.
Asherick Whiteplume
"Thank you, Varrel. Your support means much to me... we will plan.. but also act!"
"...I.. never got the chance to bury my father. Duty and honor mean little to a boy of only 6 winters when he's told his father is never coming home. Uncle Marcus was the father I lost... in many ways. I'm not giving up on my Uncle... not just yet! I ...don't want him raised from the dead... not yet. He is safer dead... for now. There are troubling times ahead... and just as he misdirected me so I would not be involved in what is obvious to me... he had purposed to do all along... I too want his sleep left undefiled until.. such time, if possible, his life - brutally and unjustly cut-short, may be restored to him. Goddess willing - Korvosa needs men of his caliber!"
Ebon Wings
The two Ravens spiral down behind the Lychgate, and a moment later Ebon Wings walks through the Lychgate and up the path towards the closed door in time to hear the last part of Ashe's speech.
leaving the distraught paladin banging on the door he talks quietly to Varrel (and Graxer is he is still here)
"She left his body. Did she have a plan? Is it to get to Ashe?" he
Jaessa Cornith
Jaessa had only spent a few moments, still seated at the dinner table, as everyone else piled out into the street. "But . . . what about dinner?" she pined to no one in particular. Sighing heavily, she got up, went to the door, and saw the others were already on their horses and riding out at top speed! "Oh! Wait for me!" she called out to no avail.
"Hmph! I can catch up!" Jaessa waved her hands around her feet with a pinch of dirt. Casting Longstrider. Base speed is now 50 ft. per round, same as a riding horse. With that, Jaessa took off running, following behind the others. She arrived at the square just in time to see Endrin give the queen a quarrel, and then get it returned to him. Jaessa brought both hands to her mouth and shrieked. Still running, her shock caused her to fall flat on her face. When she got back up, Ashe was already riding away, with the body across his steed. "Oh, not again!"
She dashed off after her companions once more, following Ashe who seemed particularly distraught. Finally, she caught up with them at the Cathedral. Breathless, she pulled out her waterskin and drained what was left in it. She heard Ashe's words about his uncle and put two and two together. Straightening up, her breath caught, she put a hand on his arm. Her normally chipper and upbeat attitude was replaced with a more somber cadence. "I'm so sorry Ashe. He clearly meant a lot to you. I hope we can bring him back once it's safe."
Asherick Whiteplume
"I thank you milady... and ask your forgiveness. I should have borne you with us upon 'Redhoof' rather than making you chase after us."
Jaessa Cornith
Jaessa cracks a smile once more, laughing off Ashe's apology. "Oh, pfshh, don't worry about it! My goddess gives me feet swift enough to carry me around. If only I had stronger lungs though..."
She takes a look around, a little taken aback by the size of the cathedral. "So what's the plan? I guess the queen's gone a bit too far. Do we strike while the iron is hot? Or are we going to regroup and weigh our options?"
Megan Robertson
|
Jaessa, sorry but you - everyone, that is - arrived AFTER events went down, what was described is what the remaining gawkers and bystanders were eager to recount.
The Cathedral is dark and silent when you get there. Ashe bangs on the door and it is opened by Bishop d'Bear in person. She looks very tired and worn, but her smile at the sight of you fades when she sees your burden.
"Enter, friends, and take rest," she says. A figure lurking in the shadows comes forwards, it's Nexus!
"Everyone here is either out tending those who are recovering, or asleep worn out from their labours. But Nexus can see to the horses, and I can take care of your spiritual needs. Come in, please."
Asherick Whiteplume
Ashe was somber and grim... but the sight of Nexus.. a Derro and yet a respected acolyte of the 'Lady of Graves' - rescued from a life of evil... by simple compassion on Ashe's part, brightens his heart immediately.
{If I have made any accomplishment in this life... this one makes all others pale by comparison! I have redeemed one evil heart from wickedness!}
Ashe smiles and crouches to meet his friend eye to eye, "Well met friend Nexus, it does my heart good to see you doing well."
Ashe gives him a brief gentle hug of affection, "..yes, my friend Graxer's steed and mine need stabling if you would please."
Standing Ashe steps toward the Bishop and gently taking her hand kisses her signet ring in gratitude at the same time invoking the mercy of Iomedae [Lay On Hands], to remove all fatigue from the Bishop.
As the Justicars are ushered into the fortress Temple Ashe bearing his Uncle body speaks with the Bishop, "My thanks your grace... we have weighty matters to attend to. I have sent my companion Majenko to try to find any Marine of the Sable Company in flight patrol.. and ask them to gather here for I must have words with them. If you would be so kind to have them watched from... I'll be brief with what I must tell them about their Commandant. Right now.. I'd like to lay my ...uncle in state... if you would not mind."
"Grim as it is.. fate may have given us some glimpse into what evil has grown within Ileosa. There is a Quarrel in my uncle that STILL bears a trace of her blood... we need to recover it and examine it to know if it is indeed mortal wickedness or some infernal scheme that would give cause for her seeming immortality!"
Ashe takes his Uncle into a burial preparation chamber and reverently lays him on the bier of stone.
Ashe recovers his cloak from his uncle heedless of his blood upon it.
Stepping back Ashe begins to cast spells... not divine by arcane!
The spell fizzles and he without pause tries again..
He frowns annoyed tries again.. eventually casting Mage Hand and Detect Magic in turn...
Directing the hand he draws the fatal quarrel from his uncle's head-wound setting it into a metal tray. With the magical sense he scans for any magic that might be anomalous...
"It concerns me that... Ileosa left the Commandant's body were he fell.. sloppy and uninsightful on her part... unless there was some other sinister purpose to her seeming 'oversight'! Varrel I'm scanning for magic would you please do the same.. on the bolt/quarrel as well.. just to be safe? I want no surprises."
Addressing the Bishop, "Your Grace, I think you and your clergy would have the better resources to identify the blood of the queen from the blood of my uncle upon that Quarrel/bolt.. would you have that blood analyzed please?"
After the Bolt /Quarrel is removed Ashe will detect evil.. also just to be sure. Then take his uncle's crossbow from his magical quiver and crossing his uncle's hands at his breast place the weapon in his hands with a prayer of supplication to Iomedae.
The single tear he sheds he does not try to hide.
Turning to the Bishop, "Your Grace... would your Goddess agree that Lord Endrin, Commandant of the Sable Company and Seneschal candidate was killed unjustly before his time... and thus be eligible for a Raise Dead should his spirit agree? If so.."
Ashe reaches into his large belt pouch, that all his friends know is his stylized enchanted 'handy haversack' and pulls forth a vial of some liquid.
"This is an Ungent of Timelessness... we retrieved it from Davaulus' labs. I have identified it with Zellara's assistance.. it should preserve my uncle's body for an entire year without decay. Will that extend the amount of time he may remain dead before a Raise Dead Spell will still be effective upon him?"
Varrel
Varrel is sensitive to Ashe's request. It WAS turning out to be a day of Horrible revelation for the paladin.
Varrel casts DETECT MAGIC and sweeps his eyes over the corpse and the quarrel.
Ebon Wings
Not sure how to raise the delicate subject- especially with a paladin - Ebon starts tentatively "Ashe... I know you don't want him around now, because you want to protect him. While no-one knows what has happened there is... another way. If we can..." don't say bribe "convince... the Nosoi who has his soul to return it to us I know how to have the spirits birth us another body. Only the strongest of magics will ever reveal his identity, and he'll be alive - and young."
incidentally, Deathwatch is now on
Jaessa Cornith
Jaessa's mouth drops open a little bit when she hears Ebon Wings' proposal. She drops her voice a bit, "You do realize where you are right? Convincing a psychopomp to be derelict in its duty probably wouldn't go over well here. Besides, who knows what he'd come back as? I had heard of a guy who was brought back like that as a hobgoblin." She turns to Ashe as he works with Varrel on the quarrel and blood. "If you want to raise him, I don't think the state of the body will have anything to do with the time you have to bring him back. By all means, try whatever might help. You've probably got a little over a week or so to . . . do whatever you're going to do."

Nexus bobs eagerly, delighted at Ashe's recognition, and takes the horses, promising to take care of them well.
The Bishop listens gravely to all that Ashe has to say.
"Should your friend Majenko find any members of the Sable Company they will, of course, be welcome here. This latest turn of events is most saddening and shocking."
Leading the way to a preparation chamber, she lets Ashe attend to the body himself.
The spellcasting is inconclusive. Indications of both evil and extreme age are evident.
"All I can suggest is that Ileosa may have an artifact that protects her life, and she may be influenced - or even taken over - by some evil power. I shall examine the blood, but I am not sure what, if anything, can be discovered from it."
The Bishop listens to the various comments regarding resurrection.
"I shall have to pray and meditate on this. True, he was taken before his time, but such is the way of things for those who live by the sword. If a man chooses to place himself in harm's way, does he not accept the risks? You knew him well, set aside your own desires and consider his. Would he wish to return under these circumstances, an attempted regicide?"
Ebon Wings garners a stern glare, but no comment, at his remarks.
Asherick Whiteplume
Ashe listens to the Bishop's words and takes her wisdom in in grave solemnity.
In response to her words about the Queen his eyes narrow, "Artifact, that may protect and or be influencing her? The Crowds mentioned she wore a new Crown none had ever seen before... I dismissed it... but perhaps it significant... last night there was a Harrowing of revelation of 'The Rakshasa' in the future - indicating evil domination and mind control.. enslavement... not sure if its significant... just odd you would bring it up with such wording your grace. I'm learning to not believe in coincidence."
He nods accepting her words, "Yes, a man lives... and dies by his actions... I would have counseled my uncle against such a ill-advised and rash action."
"I would have preferred to use the regulars rule of law authority to legislate the deposing of a unfit sovereign. My uncle is not an unreasonable man... if regicide is not possible as his more than adequate attempt seems to make evident even were he returned to life.. I think I could convince him to alter his actions, but as long as Illeosa has the throne his life is forfeit in the city!"
"I will await your goddesses' wisdom on the matter... I do have a little time to decide if your goddess is willing."
Ashe returns to the body of his uncle and taking the vial of Unguent of Timelessness ...opens the flask and 'anoints' his uncles head with the solution and applies the unguent to his corpse to preserve it ... out of love and respect for his fallen Family elder.
Ashe expends a dose of the magical fluid upon his uncle...
In the last Ashe kisses his uncle good-bye and dons his helm with its visor lowered to hide his emotions.
His voice hard and metallic, "We can do no more here until I can meet with a Sable Company marine for what I must ask of them. So we can now visit the Field Marshal and discover her intentions considering these tragic looses. Unless there are any gathered Sable Company here outside waiting... I'll go with you to Citadeal Volshynek to consult the Field Marshal. I... must also inform my mother our family's House Elder - Lord Endrin, has been slain... maybe that will convince her the seriousness of the situation and finally agree to leave Korvosa with my little sister at least until the question of the Queen is settled!"
Varrel
This is far from over Ashe, but to remain here is to do injustice to his purpose and your shared family. Even if he told no one of his plans the queen will likely be looking for any who might be accomplices. That would include his inner circle of commanders, friends and FAMILY. You and your mother will be targets of any investigation. Possibly the Marshall depending on her relationship with your uncle. Your mother needs to leave immediately and you cannot go back to the castle. Let's be away before the queen reacts before we do.
Graxer Firebeard
"I agree with Varrel.. The Pharasmians will take good care of your uncle, now lets go find Croft and find out what the hell is going on.."
Asherick Whiteplume
"...All words of wisdom I share and have already told my mother. I can only hope when I see her again with the news of 'Lord' Endrin's death she will relent and do as I ask of her... BUT all that regardless... my duty is to Korvosa first! Let's us go find the Field Marshal to consult and plan our next actions. Painful as the, possible, loss of my family might be... what we do could rule the fate of many innocent families here in Korvosa... mine is not more valuable than any other citizens!"
With that Ashe bows deeply respectfully to Bishop de'Bear leaving his uncle in her care and wisdom.
Ashe makes his way to the stables to retrieve his steed but his eye roam the skies looking for signs of Majenko and any Sable Company Marines mounted on their Hippogriff Steeds in the skies on Patrol... as preparations to leave for Citadel Volshynek are made...
Ashe will gesture Jeassa to his side to chastely lift her and set her before him in the saddle on 'Redhoof' before leaving the Pharasman Fortress Cathedral to make their way to the Citadel of the Field Marshal.
To Jaessa, Ashe is quite strong, but very gentle and gentlemanly no untoward intentions in his actions... Merely an urgency to not waste any precious time or expend the Justicar's limited resources {magic/miracles} when mundane efforts were available and sufficient; thus potentially allow evil to plot & move unopposed...!
Ashe is continually scanning the skies looking for Sable Company Hippogriff Riders...

Bishop d'Bear promises to take care of the Commander's remains, and to pray for guidance as discussed.
Nexus is in the stables with the horses, who appear well cared for. You mount up and head out for the citadel.
You are just going through the wall out of Grey Ward when Nexus comes running up, so out of breath that he can only flap at you, gasping. When he gets his breath back, he says, "Bishop sent me, a hippogriff passed overhead and she called it down... there's a Sable Company man waiting for you..."
Do you want to go back, send a message and/or continue to go see Field Marshal Kroft?
Asherick Whiteplume
Ashe will lean over in his saddle a scoop the the small Nexus up in his arm setting him behind him in the saddle... and Wheel 'Redhoof ' around to head back to the Cathedral... "No.. I'll speak to the Marine myself.. this won't take but a few moments to do! Hold on tightly Nexus, HAI, Redhoof!!"
Riding: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (18) + 0 = 18
Ashe spurs Redhoof back to the Cathedral with all haste.
On arrival Ashe will set Nexus down and dismount to lessen Redhoof's burden ...leaving Jaessa in the saddle.
"Thank you, friend Nexus... and inform the Bishop of my gratitude!"
Walking toward the Hippogriff mounted Sable Company Marine Ashe salutes, "Hail Sable Company Marine it is I, Asherick Whiteplume-Stolyarev of House Endrin, my thanks for coming to my request ... I know you are busy. I know not if you know of Lord Endrin's ...death at the Queen's hands... but I recovered his body and the Bishop has Lord Endrin's remains in her care. But my concern now is for the Sable Company as a whole. The Queen has disbanded the Sable Company even though such is not in her legal authority to do... with Lord Endrin's attempt on her life I fear she may try to destroy the Order in General.. I do not want that to happen. My Uncle's actions not withstanding the Sable Company is not responsible for one man's actions. I do not ask you to perform Treason.. but I would ask you consult with your fellow Marines to preseves the Order. I'd ask you to secure the hatchery of the Sable Company Hippogriffs... held within the Tower of Korvosa... I fear the Queen may try to destroy the hatching creche there. Remove as many to a safe location as possible... if you must I volunteer Whiteplume Manor as a possible location if you must. But I also make one request... My Uncle's Hippogriff..'Blackwind' Please see to his immediate safety... if you must stable him at Whiteplume Manor if no other safe or hidden locale can be readied. Fear not for Lord Endrin...I swear.. Korvosa has not seen the last of him... and when its the right time.. I'll find a way to restore his life!"
It is at that point a exhausted looking Majenko swoops down to perch upon Ashe's shoulder... much to Ashe's delight!
{Thank you my friend, Majenko! Well done!}
Majenko's tail twitches angrily, {Stupid feather wings too fast, and pecked at Majenko many times before listening!}

The Marine looks down from the back of his mount, idly smoothing its neck feathers with one hand.
"I know you, Sir Asherick. I hight Squadron Leader Alexander Asquith, and was summoned by your small friend there. I had been on my way to retrieve the Commander's body and ascertain the situation. We shall conduct an evacuation forthwith and seek safety outwith Korvosa's walls. Fear not, Blackwind will be included, whilst our groundlings have been sent to collect the Hatchery. We shall have to seek service elsewhere if the Queen no longer requires us here. I am no lawyer to know if she has or has not the right to dismiss us... but we do not seek to impose ourselves where we are not welcome, so shall depart."
Ebon Wings
"Ashe, I would come with you... but I will also go to your family if you wish. Your face is necessary for what is to come - the Field Marshall knows you. I am... less known. If you can give me a way to persuade your family to leave, I will do what I can to send them to safety."
Ebon Wings looks sour
"No man should have to choose between his duty and his family. As I have neither allow me to help you."
Asherick Whiteplume
Asherick replies solemnly, "It is well Squadron Leader, my father, 'Sir' Thomas Whiteplume-Endrin was once of your Order before his faithful steed 'Kyrie' was felled by a Shoanti arrow in the defense of the city. Thomas joined the Korvosan Guard grief-sticken, for the loss of his companion. The Sable Company has thus ALWAYS been close to my heart! Do not withdraw too far from Korvosa... the Sable Company will rise again... you have not seen the last of 'Commandant' Lord Marcus Thalassinus Endrin! Asherick Whiteplume-Stolyarev of House Endrin - Promises So! Fare-thee- well and clear skies Squadron Leader Asquith!"
Ashe lowers his gaze to Nexus smiles at him appreciatively, "Thank you my friend.. return to the Cathedral and safety... until we meet again!"
Ashe returns to 'Redhoof' and regains his saddle seat behind Jaessa, breifly putting an arm chastely around her to settle her before him and again he spurs 'Redhoof' into motion setting a quick pace for the Citadel Volshynek... and the Field Marshall.
Commenting to his friends & companions, "Thank you Justicars, for your patience! I needed to make sure those forces within the city for good were being secured and not stymied by the machinations of an evil sovereign!"
EDIT: OPPS! Got Ninja'd by Ebon! lol! Here's a reply for you fella!
Ashje listens to Ebons Wing's words of support, "You have my gratitude 'Nature's Warden'... I would indeed invate any assistance in protecting my family... but right now.. I must see to Korvosa's MANY families and innocents. 'The needs of the many... outway and supersede... the needs few or the one!"
Majenko nestles down upon Ashe's armored shoulder ...again indulging in one of his many daily cat-naps... recovering his strength form all his flying exertions... mentally retorting, {"True, but one cannot hold two melons in one maw... so take help from others... the world does not rest upon one man."}

Squadron Leader Asquith salutes you, raising his arm to the square and clenching his fist, before instructing his hippogriff to launch itself skywards. Nexus scampers for the shelter of the Cathedral... and everyone else heads for the Citadel.
And it's started to rain.
An older Guardsman stands at the gate, wrapped in his cloak and wearing a wide-brimmed hat to keep the rain off. He recognises the party and opens the gate, yelling for a couple of recruits, one to fetch the Field Marshal and one to attend the horses.
Inside the courtyard is deserted and, to be honest, looks as if it could use a good sweeping. The halls of the Citadel are silent and empty, with refuse and trash scattered here and there, dust gathering in empty barracks, and an overall state of creeping neglect hanging like a pall over the place.
Cressida Kroft comes out looking haggard and tired; she ushers you into the central keep quickly, leading you all into a smaller meeting room in the depths of the keep, a plain-looking chamber with a single long table (on which sits a small closed coffer) and enough chairs for all of you and herself. Those of you who are magically-aware feel that slight prickle that alerts you to magical protection on this room. After everyone is seated, she speaks in a low voice.
"“Korvosa is dying. No, strike that. Korvosa is being murdered. Killed by our queen. The evidence you've uncovered that links her to the plague is damning enough, but this recent display at her address... Endrin is dead. She's more in control now than ever. I dare not move against her — my Guard would be executed to the last man by her Grey Maidens by sundown. She must be stopped. And I know of no one else but yourselves to do this deed.
"Whatever foul magic the queen has wrapped herself in is obviously of the highest order. Endrin's aim was true — his shot should have dropped her. I had feared he was going to take matters into his own hands like this, but I had hoped he would find it within himself to find a better route. If only he could have waited.
"You see, just this morning, new information came to me. I have received a missive from my friend Vencarlo Orisini, the first I've heard from him since he left town with two particular individuals. Indeed, I was not aware that he had returned until now. A message that gives me hope. Vencarlo speaks of discovering something of vital importance regarding the queen — he mentions something about dark magic and a pact with a devil, but until the events of this morning, I found his claims difficult to believe. Yet now... if Queen Ileosa has entered an infernal pact of some sort, we must tread carefully indeed.
"Vencarlo asked for you in the missive. You've made quite the impression on him, it appears. He has returned to Old Korvosa now, but has asked that I send you to him, to his home, to hear what he has discovered. Ironically, you should be safe in Old Korvosa — the queen's quarantine has cut off the island entirely, and word on the street is that she plans on leaving it to rot. She won't think to look for you there if you maintain a low profile and avoid confrontations with the Grey Maidens."
"Once you find him, you'll need to escape Korvosa, I fear. This city is no longer safe for you, or for those associated with you. As Field Marshal, I suspect that as long as I comply with the Queen, I shall be safe — and I will do what I can to ensure those friends and family you might leave behind are protected. By remaining in this city, I fear that you put them into more peril. Go to Old Korvosa, find Vencarlo and hear what he has to say. He has contacts in Harse — he'll be able to help you lay low. I shall be in contact with you when I can, at which point our plan, I hope, shall be clear."
Asherick Whiteplume
Ashe listens solemnly, "Very well... if you think that is the wisest course Field Marshal. Fear not for Commandant Endrin.. I.. secured his body and he rests in state safely for when it will be appropriate and timely for us to restore him to life. We should have about 9 years to resolve the Queen... I intend to see this dealt with FAR sooner than the leyway time we have to restore my Uncle to the living. I also made contact with Squadron Leader Alexander Asquith, of the Sable Company... informing him of the Commandant's status and safety. On my request the Squadron Leader is already coordinating to sequester and secure the Sable Company Hatchery... this is a setback but not an insurmountable one. Any efforts you might be able to take to secure our loved ones from harm ere we must withdraw for Korvosa would be greatly appreciated Field Marshal Kroft."

I believe Majenko is dozing on Ashe's shoulder, Ebon Wings.
Field Marshal Kroft pointed to the chest on the table.
"Our treasury is almost depleted, and I must use what is left wisely for I do not know what support we shall receive in the future. However, that casket contains a few wands and potions that I shall give to you to aid you in your endeavours.
"You have done well so far in the service of our fair city, friends. Make haste now to find out what Vencarlo has to say... and stay safe."
The casket contains four potions of cure serious wounds, three potions of lesser restoration, two potions of remove disease, a wand of invisibility (10 charges), and a wand of cure moderate wounds (30 charges).
Graxer Firebeard
"Very gracious of you Field Marshal.. We shall do what we can.." As they head out.. "I also have a couple of wands that should probably be in others hands.. Jaessa, Ebon, would yall care to keep hold of the Cure Serious Wounds and Lesser Resto wand?"
Asherick Whiteplume
Ashe will nod accepting the Field Marshal's generous last gift, "We will do all we can to find Vencarlo Field Marshal Kroft...you stay safe as well!"
Ashe will look at the items in the chest and he will pick up the Wand of Invisibility, "I think this might be very useful... and its on my spell list as a Bard... if no one minds.. I'd like to carry this?"
"You already have several curative wands do you not Graxer? Jaessa would you like to carry the Wand of Cure Moderate?"
"I think, Each of the frontline warriors should have one of the Lesser Restoration potions... as casting or even wands make that effect slow to take effect."
Ebon Wings
{"Please Majenko, could you ask Ashe to tell the Field Marshall for me...}" he trails off a moment {"That may the Gods and Spirits watch over him"}
{"Could you also ask Ashe how we intend to cross to Old Korvosa given the quarrantine. Obviously you, Nosoi and I could simply fly - and I could take one other."}
Asherick Whiteplume
A brief mental sending from Majenko and Ashe smiles, "Field Marshal Cressida Kroft, our Druid Companion, Ebon Wings.. who is the Crow with us right now; would like to say ~ 'May the Gods and Spirits watch over you...' milady!"
Ashe salutes then bows in polite farewell to the Field Marshal .. he only hopes will not be the next victim of the mad queen.
Ashe collects the casket and leaves for the Citadel Court yards. [Loot list Updated on Ashe's profile, but I need to know what items Ebon Wings and Jeassa took.. as they are new to the party.]
Ashe answers Ebon Wings in Celestial as the Justicars walk outside...
"I always have a plan my friend and yes.. I do have a scheme to bypass the quarantine. But I'll voice it through Majenko as I know not who is listening as likely we are the target of any informants or scrying magics on the Queen's part at this point"
Ashe consults mentally with Majenko for a few moments to make sure he is clearly understood before the tiny dragon reiterates telepathically to ALL the Justicars present...
{Ashe says... 'I will ask 'Captain' Callatra of the - Fishing Boat, "Starfish" to assist us again. He helped us before when we were investigating the Wreak of the "Direption". This evening under cover of twilight he'll take us upon his fishing boat to the Docks of Old Korvosa. So we can avoid any direct confrontation with the 'Grey Maidens' and leave the Queen unaware of our activities. It will also give each of us time to get our affairs in the city in order as we will likely be leaving the city after our quest is completed.'}
Varrel
Varrel listens intently to all that is said and speaks little, not unusual for him. At the conclusion of the meeting he dips a low bow to the field Marshal.
I have not forgotten your decision to let me live here as a free citizen of Korvosa. ..rather than returning me to my lawful master for sure execution. You, Marshal, along with precious few others I would count as friend. It is why I fight to save this place. If the coming turmoil should prevent our reunion, I wish you to know that.
The elf bows again and walks out with the others.
Asherick Whiteplume
Once back in the courtyard, Ashe will address the Justicars vocally, "If my plan is acceptable then we have time to get prepared. If you have other ideas, voice them mentally and we can continue our planning. If all is fine, I have much to do of importance to me in the city... shall we all meet at 'Varrel's' this evening?
Ebon Wings
Ebon asks Majenko to relay to Asherick
{"Some camping supplies would be good... but I think I may travel with you, if you allow. You have become known to the Queen through your uncle and I would not have you travelling alone"}
Ebon asks Majenko to relay to all
{"I would like to hold the wand, if that is acceptable. I do not have Jaessa's gift for healing, but I am hard to kill. The wand would be very useful in the event I need to restore you."}
Graxer Firebeard
Just let me know whos taking my cure serious wand and lesser resto wand plz.. The cure serious has 37/50 charges, the lesser resto has 47/50 charges left..
"Although I have no fondness for vessel travel I have even less of one for swimming so im game Ashe.. We need to find this Vencarlo swiftly.. I'm ready when you all are.."
Asherick Whiteplume
"I thank you friend Graxer, I would not ask for such lightly. I ... feel the need to prepare.. and think ahead... should the worse befall us and we fail; I want to ensure that others are aware of the situation and other champions of light will take up the cause fully aware of the nature of the threat should we not be able to inform them personally. If we are agreed then.. I'll be swift and not split our number. This way.."
Ashe will offer a hand to Jaessa to pull her into the saddle before him and head out again.
He leaves the citadel riding Redhoof quickly but not hurriedly making his way toward the Heights District of Korvosa. As he moves through the streets heedless of the rain his destination soon become clear; the turreted Temple of the Dawnflower - Sarenarae.
It sits atop Citadel hill in a sparse shop area where it can absorb the sun's warming, healing light unobstructed. Built of white marble the structure is of obvious considerable expense.
Ashe seeks entry and requests an audience with the clergy and if possible the High Sun Priestess of the Temple, urging that he will be brief as time of the essence for evil plots are in motion.
To the assembled cleric Ashe with the Justicars present will report under a spell of discern lies if they require it on the dark deeds of the Queen, her false accusation of Trinia Sabor and then wicked attempted mock execution of Sephira another innocent, whom Ashe admits to rescuing disguised as the Greyeagle - all which can confirmed with the Bishop Keppira de'Bear of the Church of Pharasma. The Queen's involvement with Red Mantis and Davaulus, the wreak & cargo of the 'Direption', the questioning Rois Vendel's corpse, and the Church of Ugathoa and Lady Andasian's manufacturing of plague under the hospice of supposed 'healing'. The Queen's reaction to Ashe confronting her personally with some of the facts trying to ascertain her involvement but not directly accuse her. The confession by Lady Andasian, the high priestess turned unholy-saint; Daughter of Urgathoa as to Queen Ileos'a inviting her into Korvosa to carry out this mad wicked scheme of the evil magically enchanted coins to spread disease through the city. He will reveal the harrow readings and their grim possibilities. And finally the shocking developments of his uncle's attempt on the Queen's life and his subsequent death by the queen's unnatural and seemingly immortal hand!
Ashe will deeply apologize for not bringing this to the servants of Dawnflower's knowledge sooner but he wanted no bias in the info he tried to use to serve the rule of law by consulting the church of Pharasma. He admits now.. he should have also included the church of the Dawnflower as well.. if not firstly, for the cause of goodness is always in the Sun Goddess' charge.
Ashe will tell them he is making this report now for it seems the Queen realizes House Whiteplume is on to her schemes and the rest of the Justicar's as well. Soon, if not already, she will be moving against them... it is no longer safe for them in the city. But the Field Marshal believes a contact of hers has information that might shed some light upon what is going on with the Queen.. but that contact is on the Isle of Old Korvosa.
With Red Mantis involved and the Queen's new powers revealed ... the Justicars might not be able to find this contact nor return.. so Ashe wanted those worshipers of goodness to know the situation if they all should fail or not be able to return. Ashe asks that the church of the Dawnflower share this information with the Sanctuary of Shelyn, and the Bank of Abadar as well.
"Lest the worse come to worse and Justicar's fail... I want to know others will take up the cause against the evil queen and strive to save the innocent of Korvosa!"
Jaessa Cornith
I can hold the lesser resto, if I need cure spells, I can spontaneously do those. Ebon can go ahead and take the cure wand.
Jaessa shivered a bit as their little group went about this rather grim task. Thinking about what would have to happen if they should fall . . .
She shook her head as if to clear it of the dismal thoughts she held. Her voice was morose as she put a hand on her riding companion's arm. "Don't worry Ashe, there will always be agents of good to stand against evil. Be they of the gods, or their own convictions."
Trying to put her head back in order, she looked forward once more, as if trying to see the way out of their predicament. "So where are we meeting this Vencarlo? Can he really get us past the Grey Maidens?"
Asherick Whiteplume
Ashe smiles for Jaessa, "I'm sure Priestess. I merely want to make sure we share what info we have gathered with those forces arrayed to serve the cause of goodness. We do not act in a vacuum.. now that the other Churches of Light also know what is going on they can turn their efforts even as we act toward opposing the Queen.. but much better informed now. Rest assured.. I have NO intention of failing! IOMEDAE is with us... We will not fail! But only a fool insists on facing an army by himself... we need the help of all who would fight against the darkness of evil and avarice."
"Master Vencarlo Orisini, is who we are seeking.. but he is upon the Old Korvosa Isle.. we will need help getting to him due to the Queen's quarantine of the isle. But I know a stalwart and noble fisherman, who has helped us before - 'Captain' Callatra of the - Fishing Boat, "Starfish". I'm sure he will help us again, and this evening under cover of twilight we shall slip undetected to the shores of Old Korvosa without ever confronting the Grey Maidens directly then seek master Vencarlo. I know where his home and Academy are - The Orisini Academay upon Old Korvosa. I only hope he has not fallen prey to agents of the Queen... but rest assured we will find him!"
