Varrel flies in and his heart falls. He let's his ball of Flame dissappear. He did not know anything about Daemons, but he knew quite a bit about Devils. Lower planes creatures in general were either resistant to fire or outright immune.

He instead keeps his distance and uses EVIL EYE to make it easier for Ashe and Graxer to hit. DC18, failure means -2AC for 6 rounds. Min 1 round if the save is made

Energy will do little Damoc. Lower planes resist most and have strong wills!

Ashe thunders in, gauntlet glowing with the same piercing golden fire you saw when he was fighting the Daughter of Urgathoa. The blow only just hits...

Graxer, however, is square on target as he barrels in with his greatsword, which crunches down on the beast's left leg nearly severing it!

Deriven, standing to the rear of the combat, bows his head his lips moving in prayer.

It is then that a soft silvery glow begins to form around Ashe's sword a different hue of celestial light that captivates Ashe's attention as if mesmerized...

A voice unheard by any present speaks to the paladin...

Ashe replies ...seemingly answering the held weapon, "...Labbiel? Hello, my friend. Thank you!"

He smiles as the glow from the sword fades, but he stands a little taller.

Turning to his companions, "We have vanquished the evil here, but my power is spent for the day. The taint of evil still stains these walls, but I am only a weapon against evil..."

He looks to Deriven, "...this task needs a Minster to the Faithful, of Divine Power... far greater than I to removed the unhallowed miasma of this temple!"

Sheathing Dauntless Heart, Ashe draws his Cold Iron Warhammer and turns to Graxer, "But WE.. arm of the lord of Iron, can remove that hideous Golden statue from the circular chamber with sundering blows at the very least!"

Then he falls into casting again and his eyes glow slightly, (DETECT MAGIC), Silf flaps down onto his shoulder and screeches at what remains of the Leukodaemon.
We should make a detailed search of this place for evidence, possible cures and things of value.
The first to make a case towards the queens guilt, the second to aid the struggle against the plague and the third to make seizures to fund further missions. We were lucky as the outsider did not put up much struggle. I would reason it was already in a weakened state from the treatment it received here. What's more I continue to believe our time until the queen moves against us directly grows short. The better armed and equipped we are the greater chance of survival to make our own strike.

Back in the Inner Sanctum, a search of the statue of Urgathoa reveals a well-concealed compartment at its base. Within lies a number of ceremonial instruments used by Lady Andaisin for various rituals — two grim candelabra made from human hands encased in silver worth 150 gp each, several sticks of exotic incense worth a total of 450 gp, a wand of cure serious wounds with 37 charges, a wand of remove disease with 8 charges, and three blocks of incense of meditation.

The nosferatu emerges from his laboratory, looking almost excited.

"I think I may have a lead on a cure! As you know, some Varisians are naturally immune to blood veil. It appears that at least some of them trace their heritage back to one Kasanda Miromia-Foxglove, wife of the failed lich Vorel, whose death lead to the creation of the disease Vorel's phage, from which blood veil was derived. I think that this Kasanda has somehow reached out from beyond to fortify their blood... this is where I need your help. I need more samples of blood from across the population and under the terms of our agreement I can no longer undertake human experimentation. If I can identify a common trait this might be developed by alchemical means to provide a remedy."

It appears as if the particulars of this Temple are settled... alas we found no further evidence to implicate Queen Ileosa... but I'm not surprised by that. She much too smart to let leading evidence exist in the first place! We must leave you for a time, but we will return... we must see to it the evil of what was attempted here is made know to all! "I know this is a bitter pill to swallow my friends... but you must decide what your stories will be in regards to the Queen. If we denounce her with no solid evidence... no one will belief such a mad and preposterous accusation.. no matter how true we know it to be. It rightly so seems to make no sense... if we might have interrogated Andaisin... perhaps... but she may have not told us anything incriminating that we could solidly prove over her word against the Queen's ~ who will likely deny any knowledge of what has been going on here. With no solid link between them... you will have little success convincing anyone of her complicity. I'm saying this because I don't plan to accuse the Queen... I want her to think as long as possible we know nothing.. but only long enough for me to approach the Seneschal Neolandis Kalepopolis of Korvosa and talk to him with 'Bishop' Keppira d'Bear and my 'Uncle' Sable Company Commandant, Marcus Endrin... the weight of our accusations and what the Bishop knows about Ileosa's involvement in the Trinia and Sephira scandal might be enough to convince Neolandis that she needs to be replaced... or at least questioned with magic about her involvement in these sordid matters! The Seneschal has the authority to force the Queen to comply! If you accuse her.. you paint yourself immediately as a target. I want to give her no warning when I try to get the Seneschal to move against her! You must do what your heart directs you all to do of course... and I will think no less of your decision."

Varrel and Damoc, with some aid from Graber get everything identified.
The Urgothan's cloak bears a strong enchantment of resistance. As the most likely target of opposing spellcasters, Damoc you should take it. I have seen many foes in my century go after the arcane caster first, best be as protected as ppossible. Trust me, Graxer is possessed of even greater stubbornness against magic than is typical for his race.

Besides that Varrel gathers everything else to be confiscated.
The Marshall will be glad to have this in friendly hands. Let's remove ourselves from this place and make our report...

At this point Ashe pulls quill and paper and writes a brief missive to give to Majenko.

Addressing the Psuedodragon, "My friend I have a dire need of an important task for you to perform as quickly as possible. Take this missive to Field Marshal Kroft directly... use whatever means possible to get it into her hands! It will tell her what is going on and request direct Korvosan Guard securing of this facility."

When Ashe reaches the surface, he finds that the Korvosan Guard has just arrived, and the Grey Maidens are handing over their prisoners. Ashe smiles in spite of his worried demeanor holding out an arm for Majenko to perch upon his shoulder, "Yes indeed my dear friend you done Very VERY GOOD!"

Ashe strides over to the Captain on site from the Korvosan Guard...for once...someone he does not recognize...

Ashe gives him a summary report of what was discovered below in the Temple Complex and the Labs above in Davaulus' offices. He warns them that there is a extreme threat of infection on this scene and requests he and his Guardsman for their own safety secure only the upstairs. Ashe leaves silent any implication of the Queen's involvement but details that a cult of Urgathoa was intentionally spreading plague in the city through the use of enchanted cursed silver coins and was manufacturing the plague in the basement. He also leaves silent the implications of the Red Mantis' involvement.
Ashe will briefly answerthe Captain's Questions...

Diplomacy: Take 10! 10 + 10 = 20

Then Ashe will approach the Clergy of the Archbanker speaking with the head of the contingent he will pull him aside to speak softly and in greater detail. Explaining that the blood veil plague was manufactured below.. that a fully unhallowed temple to Urgathoa lies below... and needs to be de-sanctified, of course The Bank of the First Vault will be reimbursed by the Crown for such services... at the usual rate, and as liaison of the Crown to the Mercenary party he has legal right to represent the Queen in this matter {Queen Ileosa Did assign him to the group - which Ashe will find secretly ironic and amusing in silence}. Ashe will formally lay claim to ALL the loot below in the name of the Mercenary Company... 'The Party' contracted by Field Marshal Kroft to investigate these premises with the understanding all loot was to be the Mercenary Group's with a special tax exemption {as taxes were not mentioned to the party's actions and looting of ANY previous mission they were sent on} in the light of the current citywide crisis. All loot is their payment for services rendered to the Crown and the Korvosan Guard. Ashe will expect The Bank of Abbadar to uphold this as they enter to secure the Temple below. He will inform them that the glass chambers are going to be removed for study and that there is indeed a ...'sage' below who is in the northern rooms of the second chamber researching a cure to the Blood Veil plague who is not to be disturbed. Ashe warns them of the trapped double doors.. and the mural of undead under glass that are harmless but do indeed need to be put to rest - again the Crown will reimburse the Church for their efforts {knowing indeed that the Queen will have no choice but to fund their clean up actions as to deny them would cast doubt upon herself ~ anything to take coin out of the Queen's coffers to hurt her continuing on these mad plots is good in Ashe's eyes}. In final he hands them the key button mechanism to control the lift.

Kno: Religion Take 10! 10 + 10 = 20
- Basically Ashe is using the church of Abbadar's own dogma and ethos to bind them to cleansing the Temple, and protect the parties interests in the loot with is obviously too much for us to carry out all on our own right now at least.
Diplomacy: Take 10! 10 + 10 = 20
- The Diplomacy is to couch it all in polite speek rather than type out an elaborate speech

Returning to the party Ashe says simply, "..we need to go now.. we must speak with Field Marshal Kroft all of what has happened here today."
questions Ashe will make his way over to the

As the next most SENIOR member of the group, Varrel openly remains close enough for his elven ears to follow Ashe's conversation. Quite frankly the elf almost fell over at Ashe's handling of the situation.
Taking their leave after the assigning of tasks is completed, Varrel uses a scroll of MOUNT to help carry their burden Back to the Marshall. Making use of what sacks could be found in the faux hospitals rooms to conceal and carry the load.

Once on their way Varrel allows a smile and clasps his friend on the back.

You know my friend, your handling of that last part with the Guard and the Gray Maidens was done with humility and maturity AND tact, above all else. Despite your past disagreements I believe Una, would have been proud....

Ashe is stunned his expression one of honest confusion, "...I ...don't know what to day friend Varrel. I did nothing special, merely tried to be fair, honest and uphold justice to the best of my limited understanding... nothing more. You are welcome and have my thanks... but I think my desire for mercy and the preservation of life has, sadly, I feel unnecessarily ostracized those who would have stood with us and shared the same goal of saving the city... we're it not for my... 'complicating' matters! I do not know if my presence has been entirely ... conducive at times. I do hope... I have not done more harm than good to the respect felt for Iomedea's name... over my failings. It can't be denied by me that many of our companions have parted ways with us... I feel at least in part responsible as I'm the only constant in this so some blame must be mine to accept."

"...I'm sure Una would have council-ed 'a little less compassion and a lot more practicality' would have served our cause better {and annoyed her less}...!"

His somber mood drives him to silence.. and Majenko nuzzles his cheek affectionately sensing his shifting emotions. Ashe scratched the tiny dragon between the wings.

Majenko thrashes his tail in pleasure.

Ashe finds his mare 'Redhoof' and helps Varrel by loading some of the loot upon the red-coated mare. Before mounting himself and turning the steed toward Citadel Volshynek at a trot.

...it starts to rain again.

The Korvosan Guard contingent is commanded by an older sergeant, Ashe thinks he's seen him drilling recruits but doesn't know his name. Or didn't until he salutes smartly and says "Sergeant Doyle at your service, Sir!"

Doyle listens to the briefing impassively, nodding occasionally. He confirms that all will be done as directed.

The priests look horrified at the thought of a temple to Urgathoa beneath their feet, and proclaim that it must be cleared out forthwith. With care, of course, given the dangers of infection. They look pleased at the thought of being reimbursed by the public purse for their actions.

All off to see the Field Marshal, then?

Ashe...unfortunately, must concur. The one Grey Maiden he had any glimmer of trusting ‘Field Commander’ Dame Hilgar Vanyar... is no longer on duty. The lad accepts Redhoof's reins, and rings a small signal bell. As the party crosses the empty courtyard to the admin block and enters, a girl with long fair braids scuttles out of the stables and comes over to collect the horse.

The Field Marshal is, as usual, seated at her desk. She looks tired but smiles when you enter.

"Come in, sit," she commands. "Wine? Food? What news have you for me? I sent a squad in response to your charming messenger. I could do with half-a-dozen of them myself - do pseudodragons train well? Never mind, what have you to tell me?"

Ashe's expression betrays his ominous news.

"I agree with Graxer... a mug of your strongest brew would do me good as well... I have grave news... and you'll want to be sitting for this!"

Ashe makes a full reports detailing everything! The culpability of the Queen's Physician's, Davaulus' Red Mantis affiliations and crimes as ring leader of the plot to concoct more virulent strains of 'Blood Veil', the full Temmple of Urgathoa Below the Hospice all for the purpose of Manufacturing the Blood Veil plague, the presence of the criminal Necromancer Ryloth assisting the efforts and experimenting upon captured Varisian citizens to find even more virulent strains for the plague.. one that would immediately turn slain victim immediately into undead to plagues the city even in death, the imprisoned fiends drain for their evil existence to grow the plague, the narrowly averted disaster of one released fiend's destruction, the presence of a Urgathoan High Priestess Andaisin.. her death and ascension to an Unholy Saint of undeath as a 'Daughter of Urgathoa', and especially her spoken confession to Queen Ileosa being the one who invited her and the Red Mantis agents into the city to commit mass murder!

It is not ALL bad news Ashe reports the heroic actions and bravery in battle for all his companions including Deriven in defeating the physicians, live capture of Davaulus, and Ryloth, and the defeat of and double slaying of the cult leader Andaisin, AND the presence and assistance of the Nosferatu Arkminos working on a alchemical remedy to the Blood Veil plague.

Strangely, to all his companions who were there, Ashe does not mention any of his actions in the report and intentionally downplays his deeds merely reporting that the Goddess Iomedae's presence was with the party and guiding their efforts with the assistance of Gorum the lord of Iron's strong hand. Where his must mention himself he downplays his efforts.

The report finished Ashe sighs gravely, "However, Field Marshall Kroft, we were unable to capture, likely for the best, Andaisin alive for Question. There is no solid direct evidence connecting the Queen to this even though we know she is behind it all! Our options are limited to bringing her to justice. I need for you to arrange a meeting between us as eye-witnesses to these criminal plots with 'Seneschal' Neolandis Kalepopolis, 'Commandant' Marcus Thalassinus Endrin of the Sable company, and perhaps even 'Arbiter' Zenobia Zenderholm. If we plan to stop whatever evil plot Ileosa is hatching, those are the only people who legally have the authority to remove her from the Crimson Throne as unfit! She must be STOPPED! I would also suggest a city-wide bann on the worship of Urgathoa until all the captives we have taken prisoner have been questioned to see who else is involved. But all this MUST be done surreptitiously until we are ready to act. The Queen will no doubt claim innocence and complete ignorance to these dark deeds, but make no mistake.. SHE IS GUILTY and Behind it ALL!"

Cressida Kroft is quite white by the time Ashe has finished his account. She pours herself a small measure of whiskey, offering some to anyone else who wants some, and downs it in one.

"This is grave news indeed, but at least gives hope that the plague can be defeated. Especially if this Arkminos is genuine in his offers of assistance. I shall send to Kalepopolis and Endrin at once, although they are of course extremely busy at this time. But can we in all conscience ban the worship of any deity? Yes, the servants of Urgathoa in the temple you discovered have done wrong, and must be punished, but does that mean that every devotee of the Pallid Princess is equally culpable?"

Ashe gets a sour expression on his face, "Were you to ask my circle brother Deriven the same thing he would have to be restrained from attacking you as a collaborator."

"IOMEDAE is the goddess of justice and chivalry... the light and hope to all peoples oppressed by tyranny! It is not justice to... 'blame all people with black hair simply because someone with black hair is committing mass-murder'. Iomedae stands for liberty and freedom from the tyrant's unyeilding hand of law... as Asmodeaus would promote; and unfortunately... liberty means the right to make bad choices even in worship. I understand that those who break the law must be brought to justice as well. But I also know not every Urgathoan worshiper in the city is involved in this plot, and I tried to explain to my Circle brother that here in Korvosa we have a more cosmopolitan view to worship of the divine. I'm sure the majority of people who pray to Urgathoa pay only lip-service to avert her wrath as the goddess of plagues and disease. Though I must admit... I pay little attention to who keeps the shrines of the 'Pallid Princess' at the Pantheon of Many - Temple Complex."

"However, in this situation... when news of the Church of Urgathoa bringing plague to the city... what do you think will be the response of mob-mentality should mere devoted of the 'Pallid Princess' be discovered in supplication to their goddess asking merely for protection from the plague? For their own safety for the time being I only suggest we ban any public displays of Urgathoan faith until we have questioned our captives and determined who else is guilty in this plot and can put a face and name to ONLY the guilty of this plot."

"But I leave it to your sense of justice and public safety Field Marshal... I'm sure you'll do what is in the public interest.. I only made a suggestion."
