Mangroves of the Desert (Inactive)

Game Master Herkymr the Silly

The lands are barren of their once luscious greenery and varied other ecosystems. The culprits are chaos storms--large random magic surges ravaging the lands like tornadoes. The deserts have spread as the storms continue to force the land to change. Purveyors of the magic arts have drawn together in hopes of discovering the cause of the storms.

Civilization has shrunk to the edges of the desert for the most part. Mangrove trees have been cultivated to stop the advent of the desert into the remaining waters. Druidic magic strengthens the trees and purifies the water so that life can be maintained. They also provide refuge for many of the creatures that have survived the changes.

The dragons have all but disappeared and the giants are ranging out once more leaving destruction and terror in their wake. Rumors of a cabal of wizards controlling the ravaging bands have begun to circulate among the rabble in the cities.

Sages and others of ancient lore whisper of a group tasked with keeping the ancients in line with nature and magic. Absence of these guardians could correspond with the giants raiding and the notable absence of the dragons.

No one thinks to miss question the little as she grabs the pack and heads out.
Once back in the room, Anything else you all need now?Paul graciously queries.
He then sits against the wall near the door on a chair obtained from the central table. If something comes up, let me know. With that he proceeds to tip back on the chair and for all intents and purposes goes to sleep.

RP the interactions that occur amongst the group if posting if nothing drastic pops out at me we move on.

Several hours pass away monotonously before the captain returns. To much going on to be here earlier. Now explain what happened and why. I will then see what judgement has to be levied or what can be decanted.
The dwarf sits at the head of the table and looks at Quentin humorlessly.
He waits for the explanation and listens attention on what is being told.

Mang Fu Ha Saan gathers up Strong Talon and when the healer turns attention to him allows for her to heal him and Strong Talon. When the healer finishes, and the guards take them to the central headquarters he follows along as directed, alert and attentive to the happenings around him. He hears mentions of assassination attempts and attacks in the commotion of the large building. When prompted, he displays his medallion bestowed to him by the guild of Druids within Fifth Port. On reaching the room he takes a seat and allows himself to relax, just observing the events around him. He pays close attention to Shadara when she leaves, and returns. He watches intently the brief interaction between her and Quentin in their exchange of signs.
I can nearly see the weave beneath their motions, a little more time watching and I should be able to understand their meaning.

He waits quietly as the hours pass until the door opens and the Dwarf captain returns again. At the Dwarfs request for an explanation he follows his gaze to Quentin and waits.

As the party waits, Quinten plays a game of Solitaire. Though he gazes at the cards for several minutes before each play, he never notices the illegal placement he made at the start.

When Brinton walks in, Quinten pauses to collect himself. Richard sees the wooden dog's head turn toward Brinton as Quinten studies the captain. From what his subordinates said, this man will be thorough. If I hide something from him, there's a good chance he'll find it and interpret the law more strictly to express his irritation.

For now, he seems friendly toward us. He made references to upholding the law before all else, so I'm sure he'll enforce the rule against drawing bladed weapons, regardless of the circumstances. However, if we're helpful, we might be able to get away with a small fine.

What happened I have already told you. I visited my father to borrow books from him. Because the Yellow Scorpions had placed an illegal bounty on me, I asked my friends to come with me.

While we were speaking with my father, the door burst open, and three men charged in: one with a blade, one with daggers, and one with a crossbow. A fourth, who appeared to be the leader, stayed back. He told his lackeys that Nella would favor them for taking care of all of us when they had only expected to find one target, so I'm sure they were from the Yellow Scorpions.

During the fight, Dad was hit by two daggers and a poisoned crossbow bolt. Because the initial attacks focused on him, I believe the Scorpions came for him and viewed us as a bonus.

While we were still at Dad's office, you commented that the bodies showed blades had been drawn. I suspect you thought that because of the slashes across the young man's chest. The leader, an alchemist whose body exploded after we killed him, had drank potions that gave him claws. The tears in my shirt show that he struck me. Realizing how deadly he could be, and angry at the crossbowman's attempt to kill my father, I used my enchantment implement to turn him against the crossbowman.

Quinten pauses as he recalls the young man's nearly-decapitated body. He looks away from the guard for a few seconds before continuing.

The blade that you see Mang carrying and the daggers that Shadara set aside when you entered the room were from the Yellow Scorpions. We did not draw a blade during the battle. Shadara used her bow, but only to defend herself. I don't know what the law says about archery, but I'd ask that you be as lenient as the law allows. My father and I would be dead without her aid.

That is the what. As for the why, I can only offer a theory. The Yellow Scorpions raided my father's home several weeks ago and stole everything we owned, even the toys my father had given me. I believe they were looking for an artifact he recovered during his travels.

My companion tells me that others robbed the school. Did they steal any artifacts? If so, it's possible the Scorpions wanted my father dead for fear he knew the significance of the objects they took and could shed light on their long-term plans.

hmmm!Brinton states. He paces the floor for a few minutes and then turns to the guards. Procedure calls that their stuff be searched and their coins verified. I will return in a quarter shadows time to see the results. But first I will check their coins for verification.
Your coins??
He turns back holding out his hand towards Quentin while fishing for something out of his belt.
You will each carry your pack to the adjacent room and it will be searched and catalogued there. But first the coins..all five of them.
As each of you hand him your coin he "tests" it with a rod and a few muttered words. As each finishes the test he passes it back. After receiving the 4th coin and returning it, he holds out his hand to Richard.
Your coin? He waits looking at the human insistently.

While waiting for Richard's response; and almost as an afer thought he blandly sayswhen the details have been taken care of I will answer what questions you have.

Shadara produces her coin again when asked and as he takes it and starts examining it she looks curiously at the rod.

That is an interesting instrument, how does it work? Her question goes unanswered. As he moves to the next person she walks over to by Richard and when he is between her and Brinton she brushes by bumping him slightly and continues over to the other wall

When the man asks for his coin Richard is not sure what to do. Clearly these coins are some sort of identification tool but his arrival in this city didn't exactly follow the proper procedure. He didn't even know what the proper procedure was.

Just then Shadara bumps into him and he notices his pocket gets a little bit heavier. His hand reaches in and he feels the coin. "Hmm I think I can use this. But I think it may be a bit suspicious if it looks exactly the same. Maybe a bit of magic can fix that."

Spell Recollection: 1d100 ⇒ 54 For quintessence
Cunning caster: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (7) + 14 = 21

He concentrates a bit of his magic visualizing a slightly different coin basing it on the ones he saw from the others. He then pulls it out for the man. The coin looks brand new and polished as if it had been just minted. "Here you go. Please be careful I would like it back exactly as it is. it took a lot of care to keep it in that condition. I'd prefer not to have to polish it all over again."

It is well kept.Brinton brushes the rod over it and hands it back.

Lost in thought, Quinten misses Shadara's pass to Richard. So Richard has a coin. Good. I'm glad Jana had the foresight to give him one.

For a moment, he's tempted to let the guards search his bags unwatched, confident they'll find nothing amiss. But with an effort, he rouses himself and walks over to his pack to watch the search. I'd better make sure they don't steel or plant anything. Brinton's squad has come across as honest so far, but we shouldn't take any chances.

Of course, if I say that out loud, I'll only offend them and make it more likely they'll find something. Hopefully, the others have the foresight to watch the search as well.

Perception to watch the guards who are searching his pack and belt pouches: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (18) + 12 = 30

Quinten's goods:
Quinten's backpack should be fine. In his belt pouches, the metal flies the druid's emissary gave him and the bag of gems from his father might draw attention. As a teacher, Quinten doesn't make much money. If one of the guards wanted to cause trouble for or delay him, she could claim he must have stolen the flies or the gems. A less sinister guard might steel a gem as an 'assistance payment,' especially if the other characters have illegal goods or if the guards realize Shadara's pack is missing.

Pack contents:

artisan's tools
blanket
canteen
Animal feed
flint and steel
mess kit
pot
soap
trail rations
waterskin

This is all that is in the pack, magic items and other stuff would be somewhere on my person. They didn't ask for those other items so Mang Fu Ha Saan will not hand any of them over. ;)
At any rate, he isn't carrying contraband anywhere.

Perception: 1d20 + 16 ⇒ (19) + 16 = 35

Mang Fu Ha Saan, rises from his seat as the Guards and Captain return. When prompted for his coin, he again hands it over and places it back in its safe location when returned. His keen eyes catch Shadara passing Richard her coin, who then subtly casts some kind of spell on it and hands it over to the Captain. He focuses on the Captain looking for any kind of response, and seeing none he shifts his attention elsewhere in the room. When the Captain orders their backpacks searched he thinks to himself very briefly, then with little concern takes his pack off and half drops it half tosses it to one of the guards. He then walks to the table and pours himself a drink, and while keeping half an eye on his belongings he drinks.

The search continues until it comes to Shadara; I need your pack missy. a little gnome requests when the half-elf gives nothing to be searched.

The others are allowed to take their packs and return to the main holding room while the other's packs are searched.

I don't have a pack anymore, it was confiscated earlier, all I have left is this money pouch. She pulls out the money pouch and hands it to the gnome.I am sure it must have been searched by now and no one has come to talk to me about the contents so I am sure I will be able to pick it up on the way out.

Shadara leans closer to the gnome smiling and lowers her voice slightly. What is your name? I noticed that Brinton did not feel the need to introduce you. It seems a shame the way they treat some people here like they are lowly servants.
I just want to tell you that you are doing a wonderful job here and I appreciate the work that you do.

Quinten nods. We will. At least as far as practicality allows. Our enemies have no qualms about breaking the law, and they have more resources and numbers than we do. We might have to match their tactics to survive.

Before you go, can you tell me where my father is being treated? Also, what do you know about the people who robbed the Academy during the attack, and what did they steal? It's slim, but there's a chance I might know something that can help you track the thieves down.

It's my understanding that there were two attacks: one against my father, and another against someone else at the Academy. Can you tell us who else the Scorpions attacked?

As he waits for a reply, Quinten turns to Shadara. You overheard more about the attack than I did. Do you have any questions?

I have nothing for her as she has nothing to provide. I am fairly sure that this is the typical "Don't let the tree limb snap back at you and you walk away" type moment. I mean look at her, she is clearly confused about what is going on. Actually, you know what I do have a question. She winks at Quinten and then turns to the girl.

In her normal voice

Excuse me, do you know where my pack is? It was taken hours ago and I was told it would be given back to me? If you don't know then maybe you could show me the area where unclaimed things are stored so that I might look for it myself?

Shadara walks over to the area indicated, tells the attending officer her story and proceeds to pick through the "left" equipment. She quickly slides a small purse into her pocket and then rejoins the group.
{b]lets go see Mary[/b]She says as she returns to the group.

You all leave and trudge across town to the Inn. Shadara asks Mary My stuff should have been brought here. Has it yet?
I haven't seen it but I will see if any of my help have. It would have been taken to your room when it arrived maybe you should check there. I'll still ask of course.

You reach your rooms and find that nothing has changed from when you left them that morning. The nothing includes your pack...it hasn't arrived. You wait for about quarter shadow trying to give Mary time to check as well.

A somewhat timid knock on the door, Ssooory stammers a young halfling miss. Mary said to tell you nothing has arrived for you. Then with a small awkward courtsey the maid runs away trembling as she goes.

Entering the main holding room, Mang Fu Ha Saan takes one of the few open seats in between a somewhat dull looking human male, and what by all appearances is a small black primate, who looks at Strong Talon apprehensively when Mang Fu Ha Saan takes his seat. When he is seated, the man to his other side starts trying to form a question regarding the analogue for hair his species possesses, but in doing so mostly stumbles over his own words and starting over from the beginning when he fails to find words to describe the scant thoughts floating about the empty space between his ears. The monkey creature, having forgotten of the presence of the large bird instead focuses on the man while bouncing with increasing enthusiasm. It doesn't take long before the creature can't contain its amusement and a raucous laughter bursts forth and the little one is then out of his own seat bouncing on the floor pointing at the man. Its brain leaks, its brain leaks... HAHAHAHAHA SO FUNNY LEAKING BRAIN!
The man, frustrated and upset over the mockery kicks at the little one and shouts something unintelligible in response. However, the strike finds nothing but empty space as the little monkey creature leaps vertically out of the way with impressive speed and distance, at the apex of the jump it twists and points its foot toward the ceiling, shooting a silvery thread out. Then, using the thread as a bungee, repeatedly drops down on the man's head, slapping it repeatedly, but harmlessly, shouting about leaking brains while the man stumbles and ducks trying in vain to avoid the nimble acrobat.

All while this is going on, Mang Fu Ha Saan sits silently wishing himself anywhere but his present location.

Shadara finally remembers the pouch she received earlier and opens it. She snorts derisively, closes the pouch and puts it away. Then she goes back out to the common room and stops the first serving girl she can find.

Go find Mary and let her know that I need to speak with her. I will be in my room. The girl, hearing the tone and seeing Shadara's face, nods in a frightened manner and scampers away. After waiting in her room for the next hour, trying without success to meditate, a soft knock is heard. She jumps up and rushes the door , throwing it open, and stops suddenly as the person in the door was not who she expected. The same girl stands there even more frightened now.
What is it? Annoyed and frustrated Shadara does not realize what her tone is doing to the girl.
M..M..My..My..Mistress will sss..sss..see you now she stutters.
Lead the way, I don't have all night barks Shadara.
The girl jumps, squeals, and nearly runs as she leads shadara back to the library that she had met with Mary in before. In her fear the girl struggles to open the door and stumbles over her words trying to announce their presence. Meanwhile Shadara in her frustration nearly runs the girl over getting into the room.
Mary whips around to face the entry with a look on her face that Shadara has not seen before. You stupid girl! What right do you have to treat her like that, especially after your idiotic display of an overwhelming lack of intelligence. Shadara starts to smirk a little at the rebuke until she realizes that the intense eyes are staring directly at her. I see now that the infection of your ignorance has grown to the point of mis-treating my staff, that is something else that I cannot tolerate. Shadara tries weakly several times to give explanations for the things that Mary says but she is verbally steamrolled by the verbal assault. You will apologize to Tealeena, and work 3 hours in the kitchens of the inn cleaning dishes to help remind you just how smart and important you are. Tealeena, eyes wide and slack jawed, looks between Mary and Shadara. For her part, Shadara's eyes are wide with surprise and embarassment.
Somewhat stunned, she turns to the serving girl. I apologize for the way that I treated you, it won't happen again. Please forgive me, she mumbles and then imitates a curtsy. She then turns to Mary and apologizes again not able to bring her eyes to meet Mary's. Mary turns to the girl and dismisses her in a much gentler tone. On the way out the door Tealeena turns back and looks at Shadara again with eyes still shocked by what she just saw.
The door closes and Mary speaks again, What exactly in the four talking trees were you thinking handing all of your gear and weapons to someone you did not know.
We were going to be searched and I did not want to lose many items since I have acids and sharp implements in them. I took a chance befriending a little person who was being mis-treated but the larger folk. I taught her a trick and figured that between my kindness and her irritation with her co-workers, I would be able to solicit her help. I screwed up and now I have nothing not even the bow my mother left me.
Again I say how could you be so stupid. You could have lost your entire pack and everything else and it not been a problem, but the bow, really, the bow? You have no idea how powerful that is, and I pray for all our sakes that no one else figures out what it really is. If they do you will become very popular if for nothing else than to relieve you of your necklace. If they have both pieces and know how to put them together then a very powerful weapon will fall into the wrong hands and we may all be doomed.

Eyes wide, mouth working for a few seconds before words come out, she says. Wait, what? You use the necklace with the bow together, what does it do?
Nothing now you moss brained idiot. What else was in your pack that is not something readily found in the packs of all the rest of the moss brained adventurers in fifth port.

There is a feather token of anchor, everything else is pretty standard, Shadara says after thinking for a moment.
That will have to do, go find the rest of your companions, unless you have lost them too, and get ready for what comes next. We have little time. Mary gets Shadara to get out of the chair and then pushes her toward the door. Go and do not be this ignorant in the future. The last words are followed by the slam of the door. Still feeling embarrassed she goes to look for her companions in the common room.

When Shadara suggests going back to the inn, Quinten considers insisting on going to the Academy to check on his father and discover what the other attackers stole. Instead, he nods and follows her back to the inn. I've already asked the group to travel with me to the Academy once. Besides, we'll get better information if we go back later, after the Academy has had a chance to investigate.

As the party steps into the inn, a gray-haired human waves at Quinten. Come here.

Quinten smiles, recognizing the man as Edward, the Mage Guard assigned to watch over the Gladwells' home alongside John and Fae. He sits down. I'm surprised to see you here. I've always assumed you see enough of me while you're on duty.

Edward frowns. Truth be told, I'd much rather be home with my wife, but I thought I should let you know that I saw the same few people walking by your house several times today. They didn't look like any of the people I usually see, so I'm guessing they mean trouble.

Quinten sighs. That doesn't surprise me. My father and I were attacked while we were at the Academy.

Edward nods. So I've heard. I'm sorry I wasn't there to help. Your father is a good man.

I'm told he's fine.

Edward smiles. Good. Take care of yourself so he stays that way.

The guard stands. I'd chat, but I'm going back to your house to check on Fae. She's smart enough to come up with ways to draw trouble out and skilled enough to imagine that would be a good idea.

Quinten nods. Thanks. She seemed nervous at the thought of a fight last night, but also eager.

Edward nods. It's frustrating to spend hours honing a skill you rarely use, Quinten. That's one of the reasons the Mage Guards encourage their members to have broad interests. Ideally, none of us put too much of our identity in our ability to fight.

The gray-haired man looks at Quinten's hole-filled jacket and blood-stained shirt and pauses, considering his words. He shakes his head. I'd ask if you want some advice, but you're polite enough you'd say yes even as you grind your teeth. So I'm just going to ask a favor. Stay away from your house for a few days. If trouble comes, Fae will have a much better chance of surviving if she isn't trying to keep you safe.

Quinten nods. I understand. I'll see if I can get a room here.

Edward squeezes Quinten's shoulder and heads toward the door, pushing through the crowds with ease. Quinten walks to the bar and books a room, wincing at the price. The inn is crowded.

As he looks for Mang, Richard, and Jerram, Quinten sees Shadara. You looked troubled. What's wrong?

Graghhh looks around the holding room, which is sparse and mostly empty. He realizes that he may be here for a while and so finds a spot in the darkest corner of the room. Of course, that isn't saying much. As he waits to find out what will happen, other creatures slowly filter in. This must be the time when they release prisoners, or something big is happening he thinks as he notices how many are coming in.
After a long wait and studying individual characters and their mannerisms, Graghhh sees another fetchling enter the room and have a seat. It doesn't take long for him to recognize this man, he is a little shorter than Graghhh, appears more muscular and has a distinct mark on his wrist, which one would miss if he wasn't looking for it.
That is him! He must be the one who planted that poison on me. Why would I need poison?! I don't need poison. I don't use poison. Why would I use poison? And so he goes on in his head for a while longer, until he notices more people entering the room.
By this time, it is nearly standing room only.
Ah, an Oread. That last one only took three years to become "friendly" toward me. There was another one I passed earlier, in the hall. Those rumors were true, even the Oreads are on the move. And look at that, Tengchahaak this is the other fetchling's name is getting what he deserves, if he actually did plant that poison on me. He probably did.
Graghhh decides to wait to see where Tengchahaak will go. Fortunately, it doesn't take long before those in the room begin to be released. The Oread and the bird-like creature who seems to be his travelling companion, Tengchahaak, a dwarf and some Nagaji are all told they may leave. Graghhh moves stealthily toward the door, seeing an opportunity to follow Tengchahaak if he can only be allowed to leave as well. He slips in with a horde of goblins, some kobolds and a couple of catfolk and is allowed to leave, in time to catch a glimpse of Tengchahaak who is not moving very fast. He seems in no hurry, but appears nervous. Graghhh keeps his distance so he can follow without being observed. Through winding streets, down narrow alleys, he tails Tengchahaak all the way to a little shop. Tengchahaak slips in and Graghhh watches for him for about half a shadow, before he reemerges. Another long journey takes them to the entrance of the Linder Lost. Does anyone not stay in this place? Graghhh nods at one of the help he has become acquainted with as he enters the large common room inside.
As he slips into a chair to watch Tengchahaak from a safe distance, Graghhh sees something he knows this other fetchling should not have. He may not always be a good judge of character, but he is quite sure this fetchling should not have what appears to be a large coin purse that appears to be full. There is also a piece of metal that at one point Tengchahaak notices and quickly shoves back into his pocket. After this, he suspiciously looks around to make sure no one saw.

The day passes as each of you finish minor preparations for your trip into the mountains seeking the oracle.
Fourth Shadow sees you all met in the private dining room of the Linder Lost, enjoying a quiet meal.

A sharp knock on the door, it opens and in walks Jerras the merchant.
Nice that you are all here. I have several things to deliver to you compliments of Jana. He takes out a small bag and throws it to each of you in turn.

Turning, Shadara, I understand your loss is great. I have been making inquiries and Areeta seems to be a minor con-artist of the thieves guild.I believe that the things she took are in the guild halls. You will have to cross the bay to get there if you decide. I have arranged for a fethling to meet you and help you get your items returned. It may be as simple as a purchase or a challenge it all depends on Ritos. The one to meet you is called Tengchahaak. Somewhat disreputable and definitely sells to the highest but always keeps his contracts when bought....usually I should say. He will meet you in the wharf headed to the otherside of the city tomorrow second shadow

He nods and after answering questions, he turns and leaves the room with a courteous nod of his head.

FOR Graghhh

You follow him into the in and notice that after a few words to one of the patrons, he disappears upstairs.
Sir, what can I get you? a meal, draft, or maybe information? I am willing to answer questions, Marry hires us to do just that but we don't dabble in politics or give opinions just information on shops and the such,A tall halfling maiden stands talking to you. Her above average height and her blue grey eyes catch you by surprise at first as they both seem to be out of sorts for the halflings you have met. ..........................................................................

You've been busy, Jerras. Thanks.

Quinten folds the white, light-reflecting robes and puts them in his backpack. Boots, gloves, and a coat follow. These are heavy. I hope I build some endurance before we get to the mountains.

Items in the bag:
I'm assuming the items are from the list in this post:
Quote:

Ring of Sustenance (Mang)

Bag of Holding (Shadara)
Fruitful Sash (Shadara)
4 x Ioun Torch (Shadara, Quinten, Richard, and Jerram)
5 x Heat Stones (Mang)
5 x Small Tents (carried in the bag of holding)
Medium Tent (also carried in the bag of holding)
3 x Explorer's Outfit (Quinten, Richard, and our ward)
3 x Hot Weather Outfit (Quinten, Richard, and our ward)
Potion of Lesser Restoration (Jerram)
2 x Scroll of Comprehend Languages (Richard)
1 x Scroll of Detect Secret Doors (Richard)
A periscope (Shadara)
3 x Smoke Arrows (Shadara)
2 x Incendiary Arrows (Shadara)
2 x Paper Candles (Shadara)
Basic traveling gear for our ward (including a waterskin and bedroll; I figure this will eat the rest of the gold, because propriety and her condition suggest we should buy equipment that is especially comfortable)

As the teacher packs, he tries to recall what he knows about the Thieves' Guild in general and Ritos in particular.

Knowledge (local): 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (7) + 14 = 21

That's enough to "know hidden organizations, rulers, and locations," so I'm going to assume Quinten has enough knowledge to make the comments below.

Normally, I would say that visiting the Thieves' Guild would be foolish, for many of the people there would have no qualms about killing us to collect the bounty. But Ritos is shrewd enough to recognize that attacking visitors is bad for business and powerful enough to keep his subordinates in line. In fact, I get the sense he frowns on assassinations. People are more willing to tolerate the Guild when it's only taking money, not lives.

He's also smart enough to realize that the bow must be valuable if we're seeking it immediately and paying the high sums required to secure Tengchahaak's loyalty. If Ritos is in a charitable mood, we might get away with buying the bow back or passing a test that amuses him. But he might ask us to help him with a job against someone who would recognize the guild's members.

Quinten looks at Jerram and Mang. If that happens, would you be comfortable helping?

Damage and round actions Attack rolls

Finally released from the guards headquarters, Mang Fu Ha Saan leaps to his feet and makes no delay in leaving as he no longer need suffer the lackwits. He is met by the rest of the group near the entrance, and noticed as they are leaving that Shadara is without her pack... He inquires if she still is yet to retrieve it and need wait, but she waves dismissively saying its taken care of.

On arrival at the Linder Lost, Mang Fu Ha Saan stops one of the serving girls tending the main hall and requests a meal for him and Strong Talon be sent to his room. Obliging with a curtsey, the serving girl heads off to the kitchen to make arrangements. He continues on his way to his room where he settles into a chair, letting Strong Talon down to roam as he pleases. In the blissful silence of the room he drinks deep of the quiet and sighs. I would swear these city folk have schist for brains, a boulder could out-think some of them. He says to Strong Talon, who has made himself comfortable in a corner preening his feathers. Before too long, a soft knock on the door and equally soft voice behind it announces his food has arrived, to which he beckons them to enter. The girl from before opens the door and with her come two kitchen staff to lay out his food for him. With their jobs then done, the trio leave him in peace so he may eat.

After Mang Fu Ha Saan and Strong Talon finish eating, he gets up and goes to the door to leave, beckoning Strong Talon to follow who does so with a half waddle half skip as one might see many a common corvid do. He locates one of the staff in a hallway and stopping them requests to speak with Mary, "in the library if he may" he adds. Yes lord, if it pleases my lord to wait in his quarters I will bring your request to the ears of my mistress. The servant says with a slight bow before turning and heading off. It doesn't take long for the servant to return, and beckons Mang Fu Ha Saan to follow him to the library where Mary is waiting.
Mang Fu Ha Saan, you had wished to see me? Mary asks with a tone that would seem worried, yet hidden underneath her usual playful knowing tone. Yes, in our earlier discussions you have shown yourself to know a great many things about this city... I came to seek your advice on getting our way out to the wilderness secretly and swiftly.
Mary pauses thoughtfully on this before beckoning to a chair for him to sit across from where she herself takes a seat. Though before she can get in a word a hurried knock at the door brings in an obviously frightened servant girl saying Shadara is insistent on seeing Mary.

They both look to each other, somewhat in askance of the circumstance before Mary directs the girl to bring Shadara to the library. The servant returns in what seems like an instant after leaving, this time near tears and with Shadara in tow who shoulders her way past the girl into the room.

Set off into anger, Mary lays into Shadara verbally at her callous behavior, and apparent stupidity, revealing to Mang Fu Ha Saan that Shadara had in fact unwittingly and willingly handed her pack off to a thief. The exchange continues for a bit, and as it does Mang Fu Ha Saan's level of irritation grows continually along with it.

On this, he flew into his own fit of anger right alongside Mary at the actions of the one in front of them. Sharp objects? Acids? You schist brained lackwit! I had this at my side and not once did they take it from me, and I'm pretty sure your shoulder can bear witness to its edge its former owner had put on it! He says with anger as he grabs the scabbard of the sheathed sword at his side. I should have you apologize to every tree in the grove for wasting their time providing the air you are stealing! Before he could get in another word, Mary motioned for him to stop. Please, lord of stone, you and her may be in fellowship for your quests but she is something like kin to me.

Mang Fu Ha Saan pauses on Mary's request, calming himself before nodding to her and allowing her to continue. When the exchange between the two has finished, and Shadara has left the room, Mary turns back to Mang Fu Ha Saan. The daughter of the Triumvirate is of great importance, but this has far worse consequences... Worry not, I yet have a hand to play... In the meantime, Vitras? Mary calls to seemingly nowhere. Yes? So I can come out now then? Replies the void with sarcasm. You could probably call me out of the shadow even if you didn't know I was there, you so frequently provide me entertainment while I still have to keep under the notice of them... You really do provide me with some high quality entertainment at times. Vitras says as she steps out from her hiding.
Mang Fu Ha Saan turns to Vitras and greets her, to which she also responds in kind with a slight bow and a grin. Vitras, Mary begins, Mang Fu Ha Saan is in need of training in the monastic arts if he is to fulfill his destiny as Oracle. You were at one point counted among their number if I remember correctly?

You do remember correctly, though it was many ages ago I do still remember those ways. That was once my life but revisiting that again would bore me to death. Vitras deadpans to Mary. All so caught up in being disciplined and pious... Why would you want to do something so dull as that, warrior of stone?

Mang Fu Ha Saan contemplated her question for a moment before responding with a bit of a smirk. Vitras, you have a point, most of the monastic study the divine for self discipline and to imitate what they do... But my tribe? We studied the divine to imitate what they are. Surely at one point you met, or at least heard of my master? I don't need your instruction to help me see the world for what it is, no I already know much of that, I need your help to become a living weapon.

I see Vitras says with a raised eyebrow and a grin. Ok, that could be entertaining. But I get to add one condition, the best way to master the art of war is by waging war. As I teach you I will have you kill some of the Yellow Scorpion trash that still insist on following me. Should be a lot of fun would you agree? Vitras says with a gleam in her eye, to which Mang Fu Ha Saan laughs.

Mary clapping her hands together pipes into the conversation, Good, if this is settled then I must be off, I have to go meet with an old friend. And I haven't forgotten about your charge, she is in good hands at the moment and we will have a plan in place to get you all out of the city safely, for now that will have to suffice.

Yes, I will meet you when the sun is down, warrior. Said Vitras before vanishing back into the shadow.

Their business done, Mary showed Mang Fu Ha Saan back out and went on her way. Mang Fu Ha Saan took the remaining time until fourth shadow to clean up the sword he acquired from earlier, its prior owner taking no mind to the condition of the blade. A few mending spells here and there, a bit of oil and a sharpening brought it back into good condition. Satisfied with his work, and fourth shadow nearly upon them he sheathed the sword and gathered up to go to the private dining room with the rest of his companions.

When Quinten asks him of his level of comfort in helping them recover the bow from the thieves guild Mang Fu Ha Saan responds in a very matter of fact way to the question. No, I will not be joining you to recover the bow... If I were to find myself in a den of thieves I can assure you I would be trying to kill them all. While you are recovering the lost bow I will also be with someone else for a short time, but Mary has a plan to help you get it back.

Quinten nods as Mang speaks. I dislike the idea of splitting up, but having you with us would only create conflict if you despise thieves that much. I'm no fan of them myself, but I need to go. I wouldn't put it past Ritos to sell us a replica of the bow, and he has enough resources that he might be able to make one that looks convincing even to Shadara.

Richard, will you visit the Thieves' Guild with us? You have tools of their trade, so it's possible going there might jog some memories lose. Your ability to watch for people mentally should also come in handy.

Unless anyone does something I am going to assume that the evening passes and it is time to meet your "guide"

Mary gives you directions to the correct wharf head and you set out to meet Tengchahaak a fetchling "willing" to help you for a donation.
When you reach the appointed area and wait, you feel like your group is under observation but are unable to detect where the "eyes" are located.
About quarter shadow past the meeting time, a hooded figure walks out of the shadows towards you.

group:
Shadara and company I presume. I was paid a waiting fee for meeting you but the rest of my fees have not been discussed and neither has the "mention" of your bounty been broached.
His smile flashes ever so slowly but no warmth enters his pale skin. His hands are gloved with chain mail like garments and play almost absent mindedly with a tanto dart. The dart rolls in and out of the fingers disappearing up one sleeve or into a glove only to reappear in another hand or slide idlely across the back of the wrist.

His smile never leaves his face but also never reaches the eyes. The eyes are mocking and hard. Occasionally you notice that they twitch away from you.

GRAGHHHHH

You sit for awhile and just as you stand up and gather your things you see Tengchahaak casually slide out a side door. You follow and after about 3/4 of a shadow you see him slip into the shadows of some crates on the wharf side. Watching him you wait and slowly you begin to assume that he is waiting as well.

perc 15:

Shadara is oddly subdued an non communicative with the group as they gather and flinches as Jerras mentions the loss. She can't even muster any of her normal flippant behavior as the group discuss what to do. She goes with the group but does not engage in small talk as they head to the meeting place. As the hooded figure walks out she finally starts to pay attention but is still unable to bring back her usual attitude or confidence.

Oh yes, lets talk about bounty, and why not take some body parts or offer to sell me into slavery, she replies dejectedly. As if I am not having enough problems today you want to kick me while I'm down. She then proceeds to lay down on the ground in the fetal position on the ground.

Well here I will make it easier for you.

Graghhh crouches near some barrels and netting left near a building at the side of the wharf away from the water's edge. Although he is close to this small group of misfits, he isn't close enough to hear everything clearly.
I want to hear better. I wonder if I can move closer?
Graghhh isn't in too much of a hurry to move closer, but he does want to hear the conversation better.
Are these people some of his associates? Did they help him with planting the poison on me?

Spoiler:
Graghhh moves a little to get closer, but he feels the wooden board move a little and hears the board give a slight protest as he puts his weight on it. He sees a small figure lay down on the ground.
Did they hear that? he thinks to himself and crouches back into the shadows. He waits to see if anyone heard him to determine what to do next.

Quinten's preparations:

Halt! Quinten shouts at the silhouette who hobbles toward him through the darkness, but the man continues advancing. Why isn't my command working? My magic should be strong enough to compel someone wounded.

Quinten steps back, but a shelf blocks his retreat. The man steps forward. Claw-shaped scars cross his neck, and his head wobbles as he moves, but at this distance, that doesn't matter. He raises his crossbow and fires.

Quinten wakes with a start, then sighs as he finally recognizes the unfamiliar room. Another nightmare. I don't think I'll get much sleep tonight.

The teacher feels for his glasses. As he puts them on, he thinks, Serve me well today, as you did yesterday. We'll be heading into the thieves' den. I'd like to walk out with my body intact and my possessions in hand.

With the glasses augmenting his vision, Quinten can see his other implements. After a few seconds, he reaches for the bronze circlet. Sally, I'll need your skills. I need to be the man you once believed me to be.

The wooden dog and Granddad's wedding ring follow. Give me the strength to fight and the wisdom to remember what I'm fighting for.

Quinten is investing four points of mental focus in his glasses, which will give him low-light vision and a +2 competence bonus to Perception checks, and four points in his circlet, which will give him +2 competence to Charisma-based checks. Two points are going to the wooden dog and two to the wedding ring.

Quinten ties his pouches to his belts as securely as he can. He transfers a few coins in one and takes a few steps to make sure it jingles while the bag with most of his gold and the gems his father gave him stays silent. Then he heads downstairs.

As Shadara and Quinten walk to the docks, Quinten frowns. Where is the spunk she showed before? Losing the bow is a big loss, but it can't be her first. Let's hope she rises to the occasion when our contact finally shows.

The teacher shakes his head as Shadara lays down. I'd like to think you're planning a ruse, but you haven't had much energy. Softy, he says, You'll get no pity from this man, Shadara. He comes from a world where pity is a weakness rather than a virtue.

The teacher looks at Tengchahaak. I didn't think someone who moved in your circles would need our mutual acquaintances to mention the bounty. I'm sure you have enough allies lurking in the shadows to collect it, but that would be foolish. Word will get around. Besides, you'll make far more selling your observations of us to fools who think they can collect the bounty.

Quinten matches the fetching"s fake smile, trying to look as cruel and heartless. We've already killed two groups, and it's only been a day. There will be more. I hope we can avoid them rather than fight, but you don't need to know that.

As for the price, 15 gold seems reasonable for a trip you'd eventually make anyway. Given the bounties on us, that might be low. But if I start low, then move up, you'll feel like you've won something when we settle on a reasonable price.

As Quinten follows Tengchahaak, he hears a board creaking behind him. That's too far away to be from Shadara. Perhaps this vile man's allies aren't as skilled as they should be. Or perhaps it's a bounty hunter looking for a chance to strike.
