Between a wolf at their throats, and two members of the group being in thrall to Isabel the story soon comes out in a frantic rush.

They are not members of the Stag lords bandits, rather they are mercenaries hired in Restov to end your efforts in reclaiming the Stolen lands.

They can tell you little about who hired them, a forgettable man met them at the Riders rest, a low end tavern on Tattle tongue alley in Restov.

The Riders rest would like to claim to being a mercenary hangout, but really caters to those more on the bandit side of the line. A dive for those willing to take coin for all manner of low deeds.

All the talkative thug can tell you is they were paid a sum to travel south and either drive you off, or kill you. Once they were done they were to return to Restov and give a message to Black tooth, the surly Half-orc bartender at the Riders Rest. He would then contact their employer and they would receive the remainder of their pay.

Her expression shows just how little she believes her odds of surviving the coming hour really are now you know their mission.

"I believe that you should go back to Restov, find Black Tooth and tell him whatever story you please. That we were killed, badly wounded, whatever you please. Then, I hope, you'd be willing to find out more about him, who he works for and then bring the information back to us. We will have places out here for good men and women who will work hard." She looks at Darian and Rok to gauge their opinions of her idea.

We ride off, then send them back to Restov. They're not under our aegis and they don't pose much of a threat. If they decide to turn to our side great, if not we shouldn't see them again - I don't see how we lose...

Lisl thinks for a while, then consults her holy book of Abadar. She broods a bit that afternoon, before she finally broaches her thoughts over the evening campfire.

"These men are hired killers - men who murder for pay. While arguably we do the same in our role as settlers of these wild lands, we do so under the auspices of bringing justice and civilization to this frontier. These men and women, by contrast, have no loyalty to such works, and seek only coin for violence. An orderly society cannot tolerate such acts, nor can a person of good conscience allow them to continue. Let them flee and, even if they never trouble us again, we allow them to find other victims," she says.

"I do not relish killing, but I think that it is very, very dangerous to set these people free on their own recognizance. If we have no way to alter their memory - and I do not believe we do - then it may well be that this tree becomes a hanging tree."

"These men are bandits that took a job." Rok says with a bit of an eye roll. "I grew up in the city of assassins, and I can tell you these aren't professionals. The rest of the bandits we fought would also have gladly killed us given the chance, and likely had killed before as well. These men are no different then the others we've encountered,"

I'd assumed we zone of truthed them up to this point, like we did every other time, did we not? I thought we only let people go that passed that test, so if they passed it I see no reason to kill them, and if they didn't we'd have killed them already.

I agree, but I don know if we have those results yet. I’m assuming Lisl would have to prepare those spells the next day and do them then. If they seem truly repentant and wish to reform, they get the same offer as the other bandits. If not, they get the same Justice. I just wanted to make sure we didn’t let them go just because they weren’t Stag Lords men.

So once as we know their results, we know their fate. Unrepentant or resist, guilty and executed by Darian. If truly repentant, taken back to Oleg’s.

Isabel winces as the rest of the group make their, harsh, opinions known although she thanks Rok silently with her eyes as the former-mercenary chips in. Her eyes turn to Lisl, hoping the cleric will be able to get honest answers from the bandit-assassins.

Lisl looks somewhat exasperated as she says, "Banditry and murder-for-hire are quite different, both in intent and legal code; but as usual, on the morrow we can put them to the question and find out whence stems their desperation such that they would take payment from another party to deliberately murder someone they don't even know."

Darian nods thankfully to Lisl. Seeing Isabel's discomfort with everyone's differing opinion to hers, he decides now may not be the best time to try and change her mind.

Instead, he moves over to Lisl and says, "Ma'am, may I have a word?"

"Yes, of course. Something private?" she says carefully. She closes the dog-eared pages of her Abadaran text and holds it in the same hand with her holy symbol, as much as reassuring symbol as an article of devotion.

Darian shakes his head, "No, not particularly. May I?" he gestures to the ground beside her before taking a seat.

"I just, I wanted to thank you, for being so obliging in the onerous task of determining the guilt and repentance of these thugs. All of them. I know it isn't easy," he says as he absentmindedly looks at his hands, as if they were dripping with blood.

"But, your magic and spell has been incredibly useful in determining their true natures in their desire to change their ways. Without it, I do not envy what we would have had to do instead. It's hard enough of a task already..."

Lisl gestures for Darian to take a seat, and listens.

"Ultimately the blessing is Abadar's, but of course it is important to use it well."

She takes a seat as well and turns the holy book over in her hands.

"We are performing a service for civilization, to bring law to lawless lands, and better protect the innocent." She cocks her head slightly and says, "I have the impression that you have something else to say, or ask?"

Darian looks at her, somewhat surprised she was able to read him so well, and smiles, albeit a polite one rather than an emotional expression.

"This has been hard on me. Even if I manage to put on an as if I am taking it well. Back in Kintargo, I was no stranger to seeing justice administered. My parents had vassals and workers in their employ that often needed discipline after all. I even watched as my father took a man's eye for stealing from one of our warehouses. It was a crime punishable by death, but he had served us well up until that betrayal, so my father spared him that fate, though I'm not certain the final punishment was altogether merciful."

He hangs his head and looks at the ground between his feet, "I always knew that one day, being his firstborn and heir, that such a task would fall to me. But my parents are still young, comparatively speaking, and quite healthy. So, unless this occupation by House Thrune leads to some misfortune on them, it was unlikely that such a task was going to fall to me anytime soon," he sighs, "I don't know if I was ready."
