You do detect magic at the very bottom of the pool. However, the pool is too deep to see fully beneath its surface to the bottom (and therefore the object radiating the magic).
As you concentrate, you sense it is an enchantment of sorts, though it seems to merely be a property of the item.
GM Sior
|
You estimate the magical item to be some 40 feet underwater. Yes, swimming is indeed required.
Ferabras
|
Ferabras gazes down into the pool, then says, "I'm not much of a swimmer with my armor on, but if a couple of you hold the end of a rope, I'll tie the other end to myself and go down and see what's there. Looks like a pretty calm little pool for swimming in, and I can hold my breath for a while."
Can Take 10 to swim and get the DC 10 for calm water, can hold my breath for 28 rounds, the rope is just insurance. Sound good, gang?
Soran Fletcher
|
Soren shoulders off his pack, his bow, and his chain shirt, leaving on only his breeches.
I'll get it Fera. Save you the trouble. I did quite a bit of swimming growing up, so this should be a breeze. I will take the rope, just in case though. I think you'd be a better bet hauling me up on a rope than the other way around, eh?
With that, the man ties the rope off on his waist and dives in.
Take 10 for 17. I totally forgot I could do that. Lol.
GM Sior
|
Soran strips down a little too excited to dip into the pool which is most assuredly acid or some other foul liquid. Thankfully, it is harmless. After the short descent, Soran finds himself unable to see in the dark of the bottom of the pool. He feels, however, a myriad of small metal objects lining the bottom of the pool.
He would need some sort of waterproof light source to see down here.
Soran Fletcher
|
Soren swims back up, and informs the group.
There's a lot of stuff down there, and no light. Can someone cast a light spell for me?
GM Sior
|
With light cast for him, Soran returns to the depths to find... keys. Keys everywhere. The whole bottom of the pool is lined with them! There are hundreds of them!
Craggor Battleborn
|
Craggor uses detects magic an concentrates to find the right key. Then if there is no other way gets undressed and sinks to the bottom with a rope attached to him to find it. Only keeping a dagger in his teeth to stay armed.
GM Sior
|
And that's exactly what ya needed to do.
Craggor returns to the depths with Soran and grabs a key which looks like all the rest, though this is the one radiating the magic.
Coming back up, you find that the key unlocks one of the doors leading out of the room. Beyond it lies a long corridor, flanked by a row of human statues, set into alcoves on each side. The statues look like copies of a single man, and each one holds a longsword out in front of it. The blades of roughly half the statues are wrapped in leather padding.
Examining the base of the nearest statue, you see a nameplate engraved as "Kassen, Fallen Hero, Never Forgotten".
Who's goin' down the hallway? Marching order?
Soran Fletcher
|
Soren groans.
Leather padding on the sword? Who wants to bet they're going to attack us?
Nevertheless, he draws his bow, and takes his spot in the marching order to the side and behind Fera, same as when they entered the tomb.
Krestin
|
Krestin whimpers a bit after looking at the swords, before keeping to someone's side for protection. "Scary bone, and then swimmings? No, this is bad place. Krestin no like this at all..." Tail swishing from side to side and ears slightly flattened back, the kitsune seemed to be waiting for any dangerous creature or object to pop out.
GM Sior
|
It is a five-foot wide hallway, so it will have to be single file. Also, are you all directly behind each other or leaving a gap between you all (i.e. every other square)?
Craggor Battleborn
|
"Ther mightin be a way ta stop the blades from swinging. May'be ere or on tha other end be a switch liken the pits. Might not needen we all go through em." Craggor poses this suggestion tot he party.
Soran Fletcher
|
Assuming it's a Reflex Save, then you and I are tied. If we go for best AC, then it looks like Ferabras is the best bet. If it's a mix of both, then Ferabras is the best choice there, too. I don't mind doing it, though.
Ferabras
|
Soran - you took the lead in the pool, Ferabras will take this one.
Ferabras glances over his shoulder and says, "Wait here a moment." He then strides forward down the narrow hallway, his blade held up before him.
At least it's not a pit trap...I hope.
GM Sior
|
Lini will cast Guidance on Ferabras.
Wait a minute. This spell may save your life.
In other words, it's dangerous to go alone. Take this.
With the others waiting with bated breath, Ferabras advances down the hallway. If he were a paranoid tiefling, he might feel the eyes of the statues following him down. But that, of course, is ridiculous. Isn't it?.......
He gets past half way with nothing happening until
*kaCHUCK!*
The sword arms lower with great force! Ferabras, being between two statues, finds two of those swords coming straight for his head!
vs FF AC: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (14) + 10 = 24
1d8 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5
vs FF AC: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (20) + 10 = 30
1d8 + 1 ⇒ (8) + 1 = 9
Confirm: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (10) + 10 = 20
1d8 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2
The old mechanism of one of the blades made it hold for a second longer than it ought to have, releasing with extra force to deal a grievous wound on Ferabras, while the other was mostly ho-hum, if one can count a sword-loaded trap to be merely ho-hum.
The rest of the party now faces an odd predicament. The statues have all lowered their weapons across the hallway. The first two rows should be easy to traverse since those are the ones wrapped in foam and leather padding. The last two rows have bare blades with the exception of infernal blood. Might be tricky to get past those ones.
Or: First two rows, double movement to get past the blades. Last two rows, Acrobatics or Escape Artist check for each row to avoid getting knicked and sliced as you pass.
Krestin
|
Krestin winches as he sees Ferabras get hit, and looks behind. "Krestin doesn't like this. Not at all," he says just before running as fast as he could to the end of the hallway!
Could someone move me to the end of the hallway as a double move.
GM Sior
|
If you wish to get all the way to the doors, will need two checks, either Acrobatics or Escape Artist.
Ferabras
|
Ferabras grits his gnarled, black teeth against the sudden agony as the two swords bite into him, the pain no less terrible for having been somewhat expected.
"Aaaghhh," is the most coherent thought he can muster as he's cut, but he manages to keep his feet. With the blades extended, he feels safe enough to draw a wand and apply it, in order to survive the next surprise this place has to offer. Once he's healed, he attempts to move through the statues a bit more nimbly.
CLW: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6
CLW: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3
CLW: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6 That puts him at 19/20 hp.
Acrobatics: 1d20 - 3 ⇒ (19) - 3 = 16 If that doesn't make it, I'm doing it the hard way. Again.
Craggor Battleborn
|
"I still be conviced ther'be a way to stop em from swinging." Craggor says nervously. Not being agile in the least.
Craggor Gives in Eventually
Acrobatics: 1d20 - 2 ⇒ (18) - 2 = 16
Soran Fletcher
|
Soran sighs.
Well, might as well get it over with...
He then takes off running, dodging as best he can.
Acrobatics: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (19) + 8 = 27
Acrobatics: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (2) + 8 = 10
GM Sior
|
To fit everyone through, Ferabras is able to move through the second row of drawn swords and open the door.
One half of this lofty chamber has a lowered floor, with stairs on either side to reach the bottom. Standing opposite the door is a tall wooden statue of Kassen grasping a gigantic wooden shield in each hand. One of the shields is inscribed with the word “home,” while the other reads “family.” See circle with cross on it on the map.
Ferabras, Krestin, Craggor, and Soran are all able to traverse the bladed corridor without injury.
Lini and Taliesin to move through
Lini, Iconic Druid
|
Lini and Droogami across the deadly corridor to the best of their ability.
Lini acrobatics: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (19) + 1 = 20
Droogami acrobatics: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (4) + 5 = 9
I just read that it requires two checks.
Lini acrobatics 2: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4
Droogami acrobatics 2: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (1) + 5 = 6
This is going hurt.
GM Sior
|
As Lini and Droogami make their way down the hall, they are unable to avoid the sharp edges of the blades.
Lini damage: 1d4 ⇒ 4
Droogami: 2d4 ⇒ (2, 4) = 6
GM Sior
|
Taliesin also struggles to get past the bare swords.
Taliesin damage: 1d4 ⇒ 3
With everyone in the room, you can explore it as you see fit. There is the statue with shields as well as a door to the south.
Ferabras
|
Ferabras is eager to help, but he's unsure what to do in this situation, as there's no obvious peril to bravely confront. He stands at the ready, in case the statue springs to life as Soran inspects it.
GM Sior
|
As Soran and Ferabras get to the bottom of the stairs, the statue turns to face them!
Ferabras: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (12) + 1 = 13
Krestin: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 = 8
Lini: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5
Soran: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (17) + 3 = 20
Taliesin: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (8) + 8 = 16
Statue: 1d20 ⇒ 5
The whole of the party is able to act before the statue does.
Lini, Iconic Druid
|
Lini heals Droogami and then orders him to attack to the statue.
CLW: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (7) + 1 = 8
Droog bite: flagbearer: 1d20 + 7 + 1 ⇒ (14) + 7 + 1 = 22
Droog trip CMB: 1d20 + 6 + 1 ⇒ (16) + 6 + 1 = 23
dmg: 1d4 + 1 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 + 1 = 6
GM Sior
|
Droogami heads down to the statue while its defenses are still down and bites into its wooden hide. However, the small cat is unable to trip the large statue.
Craggor Battleborn
|
It's a wooden statue?
"Time for some clipping, yeh over grown saplin."Craggor draws his battle axe as moves up and swings.
Attack: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 61d8 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 7
GM Sior
|
It is. I will post the picture that appears in the module for reference.
Craggor moves in and tries to cut it down like a tree. Sadly, he chops nothing but air!
Taliesin Staccato
|
clw: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (8) + 1 = 9
Taliesin points to the statue, then says "To the attack, brave ones!"
She looks resplendent with her banner, encouraging her companions onward.
Inspire Courage, +2 attack/+2 damage...DON'T FORGET!
Ferabras
|
Ferabras advances up the stairs to stand by his companions, striking at the statue!
Can't move token, can someone move Ferabras to the spot just below Craggor, next to the door?
MWK Cold Iron Greatsword, PA, Inspired, Flanking: 1d20 + 5 - 1 + 2 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 5 - 1 + 2 + 2 = 15
Greatsword damage, PA, Inspired: 2d6 + 6 + 3 + 2 ⇒ (4, 3) + 6 + 3 + 2 = 18
Soran Fletcher
|
Soren pulls a tinder twig and six incendiary arrows from his quiver, and lights them.
Wood burns. These should do the trick.
GM Sior
|
Soran, those only burn for 2 rounds. So unless you can fire 3 arrows a round for the next two rounds or will give them to other archers, it is sort of a waste to light all six. Just sayin'.
The statue takes a 5-foot step after being slashed at by Ferabras. As soon as it does, a click resounds through the room and the stairs each rotate at a 45 degree angle. The staggered steps angle to create slides down to the lower level!
This lurches Krestin forward, his nails skittering on the stone as he slides into Soran! Will be be able to keep his footing as he impacts with his friend? Krestin, Acrobatics DC 10 or fall prone! Soran, no need for a check. Soran and Krestin are squeezing.
Now off the switch, the statue attacks the two creatures that harmed it.
Shield slam on Droogami!: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (20) + 5 = 25 HIT
1d8 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7
Confirm on Droogami!: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (11) + 5 = 16 So close
1d8 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 = 5
Shield slam on Ferabras!: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (16) + 5 = 21 HIT
1d8 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 = 8
Party up!
Soran Fletcher
|
Can't fire three, but I can fire two! I figured someone else could have the other two, since they could fire them both before they go out. Also, I meant to say this, but I studied the statue last round for studied target since I lit the arrows with my standard.
Soren calls out
Two fire arrows here, for anyone with a bow!
and then fires two arrows of his own!
Attack 1: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (15) + 9 = 24
Damage 1: 1d8 + 8 ⇒ (3) + 8 = 11
Attack 2: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (18) + 9 = 27
Damage 2: 1d8 + 8 ⇒ (6) + 8 = 14
Plus 2 fire damage
GM Sior
|
Vulnerable to fire, but 1.5*1=1.5... which rounds to 1. So will just give ye an extra point for 3 total from the two arrows.
Both arrows hit!
Soran Fletcher
|

Eh, I didn't expect to get anything out of them mechanically... I just thought they sounded cool for this fight. I was happy with just the one extra point for each arrow, haha. Twenty five damage at level two from a bow ain't nothin' to sneeze at, so I was happy.
