James shuffles a little "Nah. Just... I've hunted - killed stuff. Isaac though..." he trails off.

More loudly he calls "Check the dust for tracks. Maybe we can see which way these things came."

The rubble appears to be mostly made up of rotting wood splinters, dust and parchment fragments in a spiky alphabet that none of you recognizes. There don't seem to be any tracks.

Desperately trying to convince himself all is well, James forces himself to go back to his usual energetic, enthusiastic self. A moment later he breaks the sudden quiet by taking charge. "Let's brace the doors, so nothing comes in behind us, and go check out that study."
"Hey Vorin, Isaac; you love words, right?"

Sorry, been having a few bad voice days!

Vorin gives a serious not at the whisper from James, "Yeah." Looking back to the way forward, he looks momentarily unsure, but then nods in agreement with James again. "You mean reading? Yep, I do! Why?"

Male 'Person'

"I am literate, yes," Isaac said, if he had picked up on James' comments or discomfort, he did not show it.

James grins cheekily "Well! Someone's going to get to make a list of all the books in this study. I was going to do it, but seeing how you too love books so much, I'll let you do it, and I'll stand guard."
"Now, let's bar these doors and move on!"

The next door opens on a flight of descending squares down to a vaulted chamber, the ceiling rising to twenty feet high. The floor contains eleven wooden lids strewn haphazardly over eleven five-foot-wide pits in the ground. From the darkness within these pits echo up strange shuffling sounds and, every so often, a low moan. The other sound in the room is a stream of muttered words in Goblin, coming from a hideous, three-armed goblin roaming the room and talking to itself.

Goblin:
"...and this will please the mistress, and the mistress of the mistress, who is queen, and the queen who follows the queen, here is to guard and watch and wait and never leave not for pain not from fear only to eat and drink and drink again the water of the altar of the mistress of the mistress and be who I am and the water not of the altar to keep what I am and come to guard the room for the mistress and this will please the mistress..."

A goblin! That is something Vorin thinks he knows how to deal with. Even if it's a very strange one. With a third arm?

He moves down into the room, just slightly off to the side to let the others in, swishing his sword as he says, "We just killed the creatures back there without breaking a sweat. Surrender or you're next!"

Vorin and Isaac's attempt at being threatening is a valiant effort, that would probably work against many grown-ups. Sadly your foe doesn't speak Common, and seems to identify your words as a declaration of hostility. It draws a sword, an axe and a dagger and screeches in wrathful defiance.

James and Vorin are up. If you move, please describe or trace your movement on the map.

Vorin sighs, dramatically, though not particularly disappointed in reality, "Oh well, fighting it is!" Casting his loud and sparkly spell, he teleports behind the goblin and then strikes.

Yes, starting further is perfectly acceptable. I had meant to move you myself but I forgot to do it.

The deformed goblin parries Vorin's blow, and Isaac's arrow just grazes its thick flesh, leaving a groove but drawing no blood. The monstruous goblin moves in diagonals across the room, taking care to avoid stepping onto the wooden lids. "Napaǵačite! "Koruvus?" says Ameiko, with the tone of someone struggling to remember a piece of information. "Ah, nevermind. Stood proud the legion with steel in their hands..."
You know Ameiko's song: it's a folk ballad about soldiers defending Lastwall from the hordes of Belkzen. You feel strengthened and invigorated.

Goblin:

"Invaders! Know that Koruvus will defend this room and send you to Hell!"

Vorin, the goblin provokes an AoO from you.

On the battle's side, Vorin's rapier strikes twice, piercing the goblin's thick hide and discharging a spell that makes the air smell like ozone. Isaac's attack connects weakly as the goblin dodges and weaves away from him. However, that leaves him exposed to Vorin's blade, which pierces through its chest while discarding the destructive energy. Impaled on the rapier like the world's ugliest shishkebab, Koruvus twitches in its death throes.

"I've heard of that name from Shalelu." says Ameiko, scratching her head. "He was one of the local goblin heroes, who disappeared some months ago. I guess we found out where he ended up, but what mutated him so? More importantly, do you need healing? It felt like that blood was infected or something. Maybe we should head back up to Sandpoint and return another day?"

"Oh. That's, well, rather more resourcefulness than I was expecting, very well done."
The pits, when checked, appear to contain each a moaning, shuffling zombie trapped inside. For what reason, you don't know, but they don't appear to be friendly. Meanwhile, Ameiko moved to examine the weapons of the fallen goblin. "Ooooh. Hello pretty one!" she suddenly beams, weighing a sword that looks like a dagger in her hand. "Someone gave this goblin a magic sword, or he pilfered it from somewhere. That'll fetch you a pretty penny one day or another."
The tool she's holding is goblin-sized, but the blade has a feeling of sharpness and deadliness that you have never felt in any mundane blade.

The corridor to the south opens into a spiral staircase blocked by debris and rubble, unlikely to be easily removed anytime soon. Further to the south opens a door to the most unlikely room you have ever seen, built as a hollow fifteen-foot-diameter sphere. Several objects float in the room, spinning lazily in space: a ragged book, a scroll, a bottle of wine, a dead raven surrounded by a halo of floating and writhing maggots, and a twisted iron wand with a forked tip. Yet perhaps the most unnerving aspect of the room is the walls, for they are plated in sheets of strange red metal that ripple every once in a while with silent black electricity that seems to coalesce into strange runes or even words far too often for the effect to be chance.

Loot from the goblin: his dagger is made of silver, and his longsword is magical (+1). They are all Small, but with some bartering you may swap them for equivalent Medium ones in Sandpoint.

Vorin beams at the various praise, and says, babbling excitedly for their few moments of peace, "Been working on learning that spell ever since James got so hurt when we were rescuing Min! But I can only do it a few times a day, Gandy says it 'uses up my magical reserves'. Like when I try to teleport too far, or enchant my sword."

He wrinkles his nose as he looks down at the zombies, but his attention is soon caught as Ameiko shows off the sword, "Wooow... We'll be rich! Maybe we can buy a magic sword of our own?" Then he looks to the dagger, and says, "Emmy, I think this is your size."

He grows quiet in serious again as they continue exploring, but he stops with a look of confusion of the strange spherical room. "That is weird!" After a moment, he walks right into the room, though only by a step or two, confident that he can teleport out if he needs to.

At the room James stares at Vorin's back, then quickly starts fishing the ladder, hook and rope from his copious store of gear.

Isaac looked at the sword and the dagger for a moment then at his own hands. Now he was too big to use them properly, granted he lacked the training to consider using the sword but there was a touch of regret for deciding to go big like he had.

Isaac is definitely on alert, consider him Berserking.

James' mind turns to reasoning "Once Vorin is back, let's throw something at a wall and see if it explodes. Something with meat, ideally. Anyone got a sausage?"
