This sounds like a fun campaign. Would a goblin cleric of Sarenrae (NG alignment) be allowed? I know it's not one of the traditional races, but to me it's one of the most obvious reversal-of-tradition possibilities. He has a back story of being redeemed by a cleric of Sarenrae after being thrown out by his tribe. Now he doesn't fit in anywhere, so he's wandering. I made one for a campaign with very different rules (he was not accepted there), and I wanted to make sure it would at least be considered before rebuilding.

I do lean a little more toward the traditional races, but we've already got a drow and an undine among our contenders - feel free to throw him together! Should be fun having a goblin devotee of the fire goddess. :)

Unfortunately, inspiration has not striked me yet. I had a compelling character concept I would have liked to submit, but unfortunately it was supposed to be an holy guide paladin of Abadar. I've noticed that an holy guide paladin character has been submitted already, and I don't want to create unnecessary competition here. Even though not the same deity as Mairen, my character would have done almost the same things as her, except for being mainly a ranged fighter.

I'm considering making my goblin cleric an ecclesitheurge. I have two questions about character build rules to see if this is workable:

1. How strict is your interpretation of the armor restriction? Everyone agrees that an ecclesitheurge cannot wear armor, but there's disagreement if they can wear bracers of armor or an amulet of natural armor. What is your ruling on this?

2. You said no pre-game crafting. One of the class features of the ecclesitheurge is a bonded holy symbol. The ecclesitheurge can add magic properties to this without needing the crafting feat. Would you allow me to make this into an amulet of natural armor at the crafting cost before the game, considering that this is a class feature? An amulet of natural armor is the specific example used in the book entry for ecclesitheurge, at least the second printing.

Never mind the ecclesitheurge question. Too much of the character concept requires proficiency with scimitar, which the archetype takes away.

@GM Giuseppe - We'll have recruitment going a little while longer, if inspiration happens to strike. If not, sorry this one didn't work out for you!

@Redelia - I'll disregard, then. :)

I'll work tonight on getting a list put together of all the completed/in-progress applicants so I can see in a nutshell what we're working with so far. I appreciate the quality of work up to now - I've got several fine characters to choose from already.

Yeah, I can't think of a better idea than putting an addict and a cop in the same team. :D

Add the local businessman/pastor, and we have a team!

GM, I'm interested in entering with my own Lord Perry Arizian, the middle-aged noble cleric of the scale of Abadar.
An all-around supporting character, Perry leans to administration and loves facilitating trade, and is a man who likes on-the-field management in building and restoring civilization--especially on sites with historical and cultural significance.

Class: Cleric.
Races: You can't become more traditional than a human.
Alignment: Lawful neutral. An investor, and ex-banker/ex-lawyer by practice, Perry had experience in getting his hands dirty in rebuilding settlements, making laws, passing judgements, and striking deals. Playing his part in overseeing new investments, he considers addressing the 'Vale Question' a holy mission. The coin, he considers a perfectly adequate incentive.
Hook: Perry has vested interest in empowering and securing land trade routes--not only to serve as a sign of Karvosa's returning strength, but also to serve his god and church: trade is the lifeblood of nations, and the basis of civilization.
The fact that he is an avid history nut also helps.
Long-term Goal: Building (and possibly ruling) enduring cities, and bringing law and enlightened civilization to the wild places of the world.

Notes:
1. Lord Perry is applying jointly with Miss Jetta Stahle. The young Hellknight caught his eye long ago.
2. As a lord of a respected house, I would kindly ask (should he be admitted into the game) for resources of some kind that he would reasonably be privy to considering his station. His contacts in the church of Abadar would be very appropriate for any efforts to entrench civilization.
3. Being invested in a rebuilding effort, would this game also feature some downtime, or areas where Perry's particular set of skills might shine?

Thank you

Hey GM,

Please consider Balthus (and Slasher) for inclusion in your upcoming game.

His alias has the stats and fluffy parts (also below). I still need to finish his stats (pick a trait, finish buying stuff, and pick a feat for Slasher) but you should be able to see where I'm going with the PC.

Balthus will provide both ranged and melee attack options and have an array of outdoors-type skills.

As for me, I'm currently playing in two games and also DM two games on these boards. Feel free to peruse my posts or ask my DMs about posting frequency and style. I easily post once per day on 'normal days' and also post on weekends.

Please let me know if you have any questions and thanks for hosting a game.

Game on!

Background, Personality, and Appearance:

BACKGROUND
Balthus was born in a small town southeast of the Ashwood in Varisia. While most of the town’s inhabitants clustered around the center of town and tended to livestock, Balthus’ small family lived at the edge of town, what many would call the frontier, and made their living from hunting and trapping. Frontier men were taught at an early age about being self-sufficient and Balthus’ father taught his son well. Balthus learned the way of the woods and the way of the plains at an early age.
Years went by without much excitement until an attack by goblinoids almost decimated the town. Balthus was out hunting when he saw a large goblinoid force marching towards the settlers’ cabins. He ran swiftly to warn them; they had to evacuate and head for more fortified locations in town.

After a couple of hours, he came upon the first cabin, old man Nario, who was an old friend of Balthus. It appeared that a small hunting party had gone ahead of the main goblinoid contingent. He quickly found the old man, dead with his axe in hand in the middle of goblin and bugbear corpses. His faithful dog Slasher, sat near his master’s body, crimson jaws on his master’s lap, and growled at Balthus in warning. A new-found respect blossomed in Balthus when he realized that the dog had probably killed his fair share of goblinoids and survived, albeit injured, the raiding party.

After befriending the now feral dog and partially healing it, Balthus managed to bring the dog along with him to warn the other settlers. They managed to rouse the settlers and led them into an old fortified building in town where they successfully defended from the goblinoid attack. Unfortunately, their cabins, including Balthus’ family cabin, had gone up in flames; such was the hard life at the frontier.

A few months later Balthus heard about the call to help reopen the Bloodsworn Pass and there was even the potential to obtain land to settle; his own land and perhaps be able to settle down some. After finishing rebuilding his family’s cabin, he said goodbye to his family and traveled to Korvosa. In those few months, Slasher had become his faithful hunting companion and came along to the big city.

PERSONALITY
Balthus is quietly forceful and tends to stick to things until they are done. He has a well-developed value systems which he strictly adheres to. He is well-respected for his perseverance in doing the right thing. He tends to be individualistic, rather than be leading or following.

He is practical, traditional, and organized and not interested in theory or abstraction unless he sees the practical application. He has a clear visions of the way things should be. He is loyal and hard-working and values security and peaceful living.

Although still in his early 30s, he speaks like a veteran of many battles. He is slow to anger but his temper is slow to rein in when ignited.

DESCRIPTION
Light brown blonde hair cut shoulder-length frame a strong jawline, which is kept clean-shaven although a persistent stubble appears every couple of days. Compact, stringy muscle under white skin burned tan by many years outdoors allow Balthus to move gracefully even with a heavy load. The ranger has a well-oiled chain shirt under his snug clothes. Leather boots on his feet and his weapons (composite short, hunting knife, and battleaxe) complete the picture.

Slasher is a sleek, short-haired hound who growls at everyone, even Balthus, except children.

Maldion is an elven druid.

Here's the beginning of his background, I'm working on crunch and other fluffy bits.

cheers

Background:

The debate had raged for many hours‎. The normally dull druidic council had taken a turn to crazy town discussing their representative to accompany the reinforcements to open the Bloodsworn Vale. Somehow politics had reared its ugly head. There were Chelish loyalists who had traveled far to have their say. Mindspin Mountain druids, who were an eclectic bunch of dwarves, gnomes and half-orcs, demanded first choice. Then, there were the guilder druids who enjoyed agriculture and orchards. This annual council were unused to these ferocious arguments and struggled for a solution.

Maldion played cards in the corner with his old master Gilavar. They had started to pleasantly share the decade of memories since the last time they had seen one another after the first voices were raised in anger. After several hours, they began to delve into the more mundane memories and accompanied them with a game of cards. Unfortunately, the council was always well stocked with food and beverages, so only sleep became a hindrance.

Then after a several more hours, an unusual hush came over the council. Maldion had taken the brief calm to complete a complicated card pattern to finally beat his master. With a contented smile, he stood up and stretched his arms over his head when he suddenly realized all of the gazes on him. He looked around the council with an inquiring look on his face and an unasked question of ”what?” on his lips. During a few uncomfortable minutes, he discovered that he had been selected by the council to represent them in the Bloodsworn Vale. It was his utter ambivalence on the mission that secured his compromise.

With a sealed introduction to Sir Gyrad Tolgrith, Maldion made his way to the Bloodsworn Vale.

More to come about his early years…

Here's Garri, the goblin cleric that I (Redelia) promised. His character concept works out, because Sarenrae is the goddess of fire and redemption. Poor Garri sometimes has trouble being good, so he wears a Phylactery of Faithfulness. I couldn't resist giving some of his stuff Goblin names (like in the We Be Goblins modules), but its real name is also clearly labelled.

@Arrius - Definitely looks interesting.
1) And have you made Miss Stahle aware of your intentions regarding her? :)
2) By resources, do you mean intangibles like information and clout, or extra money? The proceedings in the Vale are in fairly early stages, so there's only so much information to be had, but someone talented in leadership and administration would definitely be useful, and the party will definitely be viewed as leaders in the effort.
3) There will be downtime in the module, and I'm even potentially willing to figure out and incorporate the Ultimate Campaign downtime rules (though I've not dealt with them much before).

@Balthus Tauran - Very cool! I like where you've gone with him.

@Jubal Breakbottle - Looks nice so far, and the idea that he's only there because he doesn't care is kind of humorous. :)

@Garri Leaflock - Quite fun, and I'm a fan of goblin naming conventions as well.

Dot.

Looks interesting... If I don't get accepted in another campaign that is closing soon I will submit a character for this one.

All right, for complete/mostly complete submissions it looks like we have:

If I missed anyone, shout out!

So there will be accidental death of a child in the backstory. If that is something that will bother anyone I can go with a different backstory and change the cavaliers order. He is almost done I just want to make sure their is no issue with the darker part. I swear I am still excited to play!

And I Love Goblins!

Very rough background which I will fill out so long as there are no complaints:
In his free time he spends all his time in a tavern drinking his life away. This lead to having some unscrupulous companions. One evening there was a fight outside a tavern, this happened every now and then, but weapons were drawn and with a miss swing and he killed a child. Horrified at his actions in killing a street urchin. He takes the dead child and flees back to the temple. Hoping to have the child brought back. He swears to the Priestess that he will turn himself in and let the judge hang him if she bring the child back. The priestess refused. The child is going to be judged. The Priestess of Pharasma chose to judge him herself. Instead of going to be hung and there being more death he was to dedicate his life to protecting life.
There will be more details on how he became a cavalier and some of the before the accidental murder to follow after the sleeping has happened.

GM Rennai wrote:

Great, I'm glad you liked him. Since the recruitment won't close for a while yet, I may write a scene or two about his past to get into character a little bit more.

Game on!

@Balthus Tauran - Sounds perfect; that sort of thing definitely helps when decision time comes, and I know it helps the player get a better feel, too.

@ Balthus - I like that idea. Do you mind if i write one or two for James?

Here's his sheet.

1. Aye, we have it sorted out: The two a shared history. He's a close family friend.
2. Intangibles and influence mostly. Is it OK for him to be one of the many minor lords of Karvosa?
3. If such rules are necessary, this will be grand. Thank you.

No more questions.
Here's hoping.

Lord Perry Arizian wrote:

Confirmed. Jetta has known "Uncle Perry" since she was child.

@Lord Perry, Jetta - I figured as much, I just wanted to check in case Jetta wasn't in on it and saw herself more the strong, silent type where such matters were concerned. And yes, minor nobility is fine.

Hellknight James wrote:

I don't think you need my permission and I'm pretty sure the GM won't mind at all so go for it!

@Hellknight James - Balthus is right; I don't mind one bit. ;)

What I mean by making Garri a good/redeemed goblin:

Garri's promise to be good (made to The Lady, his name for Sarenrae):
Garri will not eat creatures that can talk.
Garri will not play jokes that could hurt someone.
Garri will be careful what he lights on fire.
Garri will try not to take other peoples' things.
The Headband that Helps Garri Be Good is intended to help him keep this promise.

Garri wants to learn to read someday, because he wants to read The Lady's Book.

Garri does still eat pickles and bugs and other weird things.

Garri still _loves_ fire and practical jokes. All his chosen domain spells are fire spells.

Garri wants to help other goblins learn to be good and love The Lady, too.

Garri still hates dogs and horses. He knows that The Lady sometimes doesn't want them hurt, though, or eaten.

Garri still laughs maniacally, but not if someone is getting hurt.

Garri still collects junk, but he doesn't steal it anymore.

Garri has worked very hard to learn to fight well with The Lady's Slicer (scimitar).

Garri loves The Lady best of all. He sleeps with her symbol in his hands. He prays to her in an odd combination of goblin and common.

GM Rennai wrote:

The intention is not necessarily to have them come to the Bloodsworn Vale together, but to have some meaningful connection between the characters prior to the events of the adventure. Jetta would not be too happy to have Perry around in character, thinking he was sent by her parents to spy on her. That should make things a bit more interesting.

Mairen's application is complete. Her appearance and background are finished, and she's ready for review. Thanks!

@Garri - Cute, I love it. :) So can I make your Phylactery of Faithfulness a tiny model of Sarenrae that reaches a hand down and smacks him in the forehead if he's bad?

@Jetta - Sounds perfect (and that's what was in my head, I just didn't communicate it well). I'll definitely keep it in mind if the two of you end up being chosen together.

@Mairen - Thanks for letting me know!

Ok so I changed it up a bit. Here is the Background. His reasons for going to the Vale are three-fold. The first to help secure the valley and then set up a group of traveling guards to patrol the road. The other would be to, if anyone is interested assuming I get to play, to be the bodyguard of someone coming to the Vale. •Lord Perry Arizian sounds perfect for this but I can be flexible. I rather like the idea of having to protect a PC or even and NPC.

Amund Basurto will be a human male Cavalier, his order is going to be the Order of the Guard if I have someone to protect otherwise it would be the Order of the Shield

Background:
Amund Basurto was born in the Varisian city of Korvosa. He came from a large family, his parent owned a bakery which Amund wanted nothing to do with. He wanted to be a hero. Walking away from his family in a rather selfish move he went to join the Korvosan Guard. But he was promptly revoked due to a lack of training and discipline. Refusing to go back to his family since he was a bit of an ass about leaving.
Amund keeps trying day after day and eventually he is given a chance to be a guard. He joins with a group of new recruits and no money to his name after having to slum it for almost a month. So to have the uniform and the issued weapons he is in debt to the city with his wages being garnished until he paid it back. While he is excited to be in the guard and learning to defend the city he has no friends around him. His group doesn't like him and the commander of his unit gives him the grunt work such as cleaning weapons and mucking out the horses stalls. It is in these stalls with the city guards horses that he finds peace with the animals. He is on the path to what he always wanted but he is miserable, broke, and lonely. Only staying because pride demands it. This peace that he feels with the horses and the skill that he has with them gets him moved to a mounted guard.

The equipment is taking me a little longer but Amund will be done soon.

Scarab Sages

dotting for tentitive interest, there are so many good choices already I almost dont want to interupt.

@TheNine - Nothing's set in stone yet; if you feel like putting a character together, go for it! You're correct, though - it's a strong pool of characters.

@Deaths Adorable Apprentice - Looks good so far! I like where he's going, and I can definitely see the idea of reclaiming the Vale as being right up Order of the Shield's alley if the personal bodyguard idea doesn't work out.

@Everyone - The types of personal connections between characters that Jetta, Perry, and Amund are working on are completely fine by me. Don't feel obligated to do it, but if you'd like to, go for it! Remember, however, that not every character can be chosen, so if a particular PC submission is your entire reason for joining in, expect to have to do some reworking or pass up the spot if you're chosen and they're not. We can also set any pre-existing personal connections PCs may like to make after the group's been chosen, if you want to be certain of who you're connecting with.

Another idea to bring in more character history is to include some ideas for NPCs that your character is closely connected with who may or may not be interested in coming to the Vale. The campaign setup is fairly open, and there's tons of room to work in friends that want to come along, although they probably won't be able to join the party for day-to-day tasks. (Unless Leadership comes into play next level - while I prefer that not everyone takes it, I am open to it being used.)

Amund will probably go the leadership route. And I love having PCs interconnected versus just meeting at the start of a game.

Scarab Sages

So just to throw my hat into the ring, I will be making a monk/bard.

GM:
Maldion's crunch is basically done except for tinkering. He's an unoptimized elven druid. I'll definitely deliver a clear personality and game mechanic role in the party.

I don't plan to connect with any other applicants before selection. However, I believe these background connections are important to create the best role-playing relationships at the start of the game. So would look to develop them after selection.

After clarifying his personality and game mechanic role in the party, I would appreciate feedback about how much history to develop. It would align with his personality so would be extra fluff. As much as I want to be selected, I want to minimize my character development time due to RL. Cheers

After the party is selected, if Garri is included he will look for someone who can talk to him and give him advice on how to be good. He doesn't want to always get smacked around by his headband! :)

@GM: I love your idea for the phylactery. Exactly the tone I was going for with Garri. He's supposed to be kind of cute and lovable, trying hard to be good, a little comic relief that still fits into a serious adventure. He's also an amazing little swordsman with his Lady's Slicer, since he can't channel very much or well at all.

edit: The cute and lovable was to real players, not to characters. His Charisma isn't that good.

Any of the people mentioned in Jetta's backstory are certainly free to be used. Her parents might invest in the expedition, especially if she ends up being chosen separate from Perry. She would definitely stay in contact with the her closest superior in the Order, Maralictor Venn. Leadership might be an interesting option for Jetta as well. That would give a mechanical reason for getting some extra help from the Order.

Well, don't look at me. Jetta would have a hard time thinking of goblins as anything more than pests. Then again, she has reasons to think even a goblin could become civilised. It might be interesting to see how they interact.

It can't be too much worse than being stuck with a stoner, can it?

Can I have an Apollo? Specifically for a guard dog? And could I swap out the skill focus feat for light armor proficiency?

Jetta Stahle wrote:

Thanks! And I completely agree. I see plenty of room for both conflict and growing respect...

Is there information to be found before Amund leaves about the types of creatures in the vale? Like are there a lot of Fey, Aberrations, Plants, or Giants?

A dwarven alchemist (Balgi) for consideration.

Balgi Dunthal backstory:

Balgi curses once again, a string of dwarven profanity that would color the cheeks of maidens, were there any around to hear him. It is a mystery how he manages to find his breath within his constant string of colorful utterances.

He finally calms down enough to work the rosebush thorns out of his beard once again, cutting his hands once again as he pries the sharp edges out with his hands.

It's bad enough that his uncle Gundak charged him with "helping the human King Arabasti clear new routes to benefit all races in the expansion of trade" or some such trite nonsense... but then it had to involve all these dratted plants. An understatement to say that he'd rather be back in his shop, doing something useful like making a tincture to soothe soreness of the rump rather then tromping the the brush.

He finishes freeing his beard and considers the path ahead. He still is inclined to burn the whole thing down, even over the objection of the superstitious humans it the group. Fire was the simple answer, really, But... they were rich superstitious humans, so best to keep em' on friendly terms. Back home in Janderhoff they needed all the friends they could come by.

So instead Balgi grunts loudly in frustration. He tucks his beard back in his plate armor, shoulders his longhammer, and falls back in line with the other idiots foolish enough to come along on this errand. If you're going to do something stupid, at least it's nice to have company, he considers as he trudges on behind the others.

@Deaths Adorable Apprentice - You'd be meaning to use the Apollo as your cavalier mount, or as an animal you've bought/adopted/inherited/whatever in addition to your mount? Technically it wouldn't qualify as your cavalier mount unless you were size Small (or possibly if you took Undersized Mount). If it's meant to be a purchase/adopted/whatever, I'd allow it for the price of a riding dog (150 GP) and allow the trade of Skill Focus (Perception) for Light Armor Proficiency. (And Leadership seems practically mandatory for cavaliers in my head, for some reason.)

@TheNine - Cool cool, I'll keep eyes out!

@Jubal Breakbottle:
I totally get only having so much time to spend on character development pre-game. What you've got now is enough for me to go on, but if you'd like to go further, anything you can give will help, especially a brief "how did he get here"-type history. (EDIT: I missed where you'd already added a bit of that in on your profile. What you've got is perfect for me to decide on, although, as always, more never hurts.)

@Garri Leaflock - Sounds perfect. :)

@Jetta Stahle - Some great ideas in there. I'll definitely keep it all in mind going forward. (And you just know the goblin priest's gonna become your best buddy. :D)

@Mairen Roäc - Perfect, I'll be taking a look over the next little bit!

@Tangaroa - Cool cool; I like the look of him so far. You definitely don't see alchemists looking for plate armor too often. I think you've got one too many feats, though - medium and heavy armor proficiency are two separate feats.

@Everyone - For any looking for more specific information about the area (especially ranger-types):

The Vale is very rough, hilly terrain nestled in a cleft of the Mindspin Mountains that forms one of the few easy passes. You've heard stories of strange happenings with the plants in the area; it'd suggest that either the plants themselves or creatures with a close connection to nature are active in the area. Many of the monstrous threats typical to any wilderness are present, and being on the border of Varisia, there is a goblinoid presence as well.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

An update to the candidate list:

Again, if I missed anyone, shout out!

Yes the dog is not the mount. And leaderships just fits this class so well. Either for a cohort which is my plan or for a monstrous mount which is what most guides recommend.

Thank you for letting me trade the feats. I do not really have a way to beef up it hit points so it needs better AC.

I should have him done excluding the skills which will have to wait until I know which Order I am taking, assuming I get to play that is, Since they give access to different skills. And I have to find all the weights of the random things that I bought.

Sounds good. Do you have an alias put together, or a character sheet I could take a look at?

@GM: How would you feel about an Acadamae graduated conjurer being sent to support the King's reclamation of the Vale as a concept? I can make him a summoner or a classic wizard, but my preference goes to the latter.

@GM Giuseppe - Sounds great. It seems a pretty good "proving yourself out of college" job. Whichever you would prefer is fine; we're pretty light on arcane so far, so either one would be fairly useful. (I saw your Kingmaker recruitment, by the way; it's a wrench to skip applying, but I just don't know that I've got the brainspace to keep up the posting rate you want and still do justice to the games I'm running and playing in already. Hope it goes well for you, though!)

Thank you very much for both your answer and your greeting GM!

"Roses? I'll tell you all about them. Let's start with the thorns."

Meet Anthuria, Grounds Mistress of Theumanexus College.
Half-elf Sorceress (Verdant) 6

Disregarded by the wizard academies as a two-bit magician, Anthuria has found gainful employment as the groundskeeper of Theumanexus College. Indeed, she has blossomed. And while many of the faculty speculate as to her secret, none can deny her abilities. The gardens have never looked better.

Yet, when approached by the Crown for this Vale nonsense, the wizards balked. But, who more expendable than a mere gardener? With a passable knowledge of arcana, Anthuria made a perfect (and replaceable) candidate.

@Anthuria - Good start so far, and I haven't often seen the verdant bloodline used. One thing, though - Reactionary and Elven Reflexes don't stack, since they provide the same type of bonus. Otherwise, looks like a good beginning!

GM:
Fair enough. I'll continue to tinker, and you judge him when you're ready to select. Cheers.

Garri looks around the crowded room, thinking.

He wishes he had some pickled roaches to eat. However, he's learned the hard way not to eat them around others. He approaches someone who is standing near him and asks if they have a pet toad, and if so, can he see it. I don't want to just assume everyone wants to roleplay in this thread, so looking for a volunteer...
