Bref - If DMDM will let you retcon, a flask of oil has the same effect as Alchemists fire at a much lower cost if there is already a fire. Toss some oil instead of the alchemists fire.

It's going to spend a round writhing and squirming and trying to stop the burning. This is a FRA and requires a Reflex save: 1d20 ⇒ 4


It continues writhing and shrilling. Bref has already used up this round's attacks (and the next couple, too) and I think Zimu doesn't want to use any more force missiles. So, unless someone wants to attack the thing in some other manner, let's go forward one more round.

After much unsightly writhing and unpleasant shrilling, the creature seems to have put out the flames -- perhaps by shedding part of its mass; it looks smaller now.

Bref promptly hits it with another flask.

I think I'm counting the rounds correctly here... so, the poor thing takes damage and gets to roll another save. 1d20 ⇒ 14 Okay, it makes it. It's taken quite a bit of damage, but I think you're starting to run short on fire stuff...?

bref hit it or has the capability to hit it, with 2 alch fire flasks and one oil flask, i beliee judge also hit it with oil but i am not sure. Bref also burned one patch of mold

The crossbow bolt actually passed through the grating and hit it! Unfortunately, it didn't seem to take any harm from the experience; the bolt passes right through its vaporous body.

Yes, it has some sort of DR. -- Bref, I have indeed put three separate fire-bombs worth of damage on the thing, including burn damage. But now it has put itself out. Do you have anything else to burn it with?


Morsum actually manages to tear some of the creature's misty alien flesh away. (Its amorphous, vaporous nature seems to make it fairly difficult to hurt.)

The creature immediately lashes out with a tentacle: 1d20 ⇒ 12 As it drains blood from Morsum, it begins to visibly swell and darken. It had grown smaller and paler, but now it appears to be recovering some of its health...

Morsum, take another 1d3 ⇒ 1 of Con damage. (I do hope everyone is keeping track of Con damage, as well as consumables -- you're a long way from finishing this test.)

I have a feeling getting in close and letting it vampire its way through our blood is a lot less effective than hurting it from here..

On Bref's action he will pocket the flask he was last given and start gathering as much of the splintered wood from the past room. He will race back and forth throwing the wood onto the grate attempting to cover it with flammable things. After however many rounds that takes to get a good pile he will light it up with flaming oil.

I am not sure why Morsum was sent in? It will just aid the creature's abilities further and weaken our group. We need to learn some patience or whatever the evil equivalent of patience is.

'Judge let's pull your adventurous shadow back, I'm sure it will have its fair share of combat soon enough.'

As a move action I can hold out items for Bref to take or can actually aid Bref bring in material. I am not sure how many of my items Bref has used against our gaseous bloodsucker.

If the creature starts to pursue Morsum I will cast another Force Missile but since I used three against this thing and one against the archon, I would rather save my remaining ones.

Welp, the creature took a little damage from Morsum's frenzy. Not much, though.

However, it seems to have been disoriented enough that Morsum is able to dodge its counter-slash.

Realizing the ineffectiveness of his attacks, Morsum withdraws back to protect the others.


Bref's idea of burning it with wood is interesting -- but keep in mind that it can move around beneath the grating.


The thing does not pursue Morsum. It stays on the edge of the room, still beneath the grating. It ripples and pulses and swirls, but is silent.

So how many flasks (of one thing or another) do we have left now?

I have one alchemist's fire, two oils and gave one alchemi's fire to Bref. How many rounds have we been in this encounter? We should not blindly rush but I'm still aware of our time constraints.

Tohram then looks at his loyal, but bleeding servant. And calls on the powers of shadow to heal Morsum.

After Jax hits it with a flask of acid, the thing's swirling increases. The acid is clearly doing damage; you can see its vaporous flesh burn and sizzle. A few seconds later, Zimu hits it with an acid splash her second roll, the 20. It slides away behind the pillar where the darkness-globe was.

Zimu throws another acid splash, which misses, and then yet another +4 AC and 20% miss chance because it's hiding behind the column1d100 ⇒ 24 which hits.

At that, the thing's swirling becomes violent. It churns for a moment, then suddenly lunges at astonishingly high speed across the room towards you. It explodes out from under the grating in a wave of scarlet.

Charge attack against Zimu -- it's intelligent, but it doesn't realize she can't hit it at the far end of the room, so it's trying to eliminate her. The good news is, this takes it out from under the grating and subjects it to AoOs from Bref and Sir Edmin. The bad news is, it won't take too many rounds to reduce Zimu to a bloodless husk. So, roll!

On Jax's next turn, he'll use a swift action to use an arcane point to make his short sword a +1 weapon and move to engage the creature. The range of acid flasks is only 30' so he should be within 5' of Cimu, letting him move up to flank with Edmin or Bref and full attack.

had my fire not been lit yet? if it had NOT then I would have used the alch fire in my hand and not my teeth, in which case I would have splashed myself with fire and that is ok with me, and it will burn next round as well.

Did the others set it afire from the four rounds I used Acid Splash on it and finally provoked it? I am assuming its the fourth attack that ht it and drew it out.

If so throwing oil on it, otherwise it would be Alchemist's fire

It is hard to know the layout, Morsum should still have been protecting the front, so I assume he is within a 5' move.

Sir Edmin hit, but hardly any damage got past its DR. Bref hit but didn't get past its DR at all. Zimu, Acid splash doesn't set things on fire, though it does burn them (acid burns, yeah?). Zimu did crit with the Alchemist's Fire, so let's check for damage on that: 2d6 ⇒ (2, 4) = 6 and it's vulnerable to fire, so 50% extra damage = 9 hits. Nice! But it still gets its hitsies in, so here it comes:

Whoa oh! Good for you, bad for it. Zimu's fire attack seems to have disoriented the creature; it lashes out with its tentacles, but blindly, and Zimu dodges easly.

Okay, now we do those other attacks. Give me a sec...


3, 1, 4, 1, 1, 4 = 14 hp from everyone's attacks after DR. The creature's vapory, amorphous nature makes it damnably hard to damage.

Grumblejack leans over and tries to pound on it. 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (10) + 8 = 18 2d8 + 5 ⇒ (4, 5) + 5 = 14 Okay, it's in trouble now -- poor thing looks half squashed.

Bref, Zimu and Sir Edmin can try to finish it off this round. (Dren and the Judge can act too.)


Bref, Morsum and Sir Edmin take 1 point of splash damage each from the alchemist's fire.

Well, the Cardinal's network is spread wide. The Knots are all over the place; he can teleport; and he's high enough level to have access to planar creatures too. Oh, and he lives next to a swamp, which is always good for some low to medium CR monsters.

Also, when you're Evil, the forces of good are constantly showing up to investigate those mysterious disappearances, follow up on that obscure prophecy, track down those rumors, or otherwise make nuisances of themselves. When you're low-level evil, this may mean you die. When you're the Cardinal, Zargo, and Tiadora, it's more likely to mean you get some free test subjects, torture victims, or fresh stock for an interesting new room in your dungeon. (This is more or less what happened to the dogman.)
