“Temperance, that’s absolutely inspired!” Arien whispers, rummaging through her pack for a sack or twine.
Is that feasible, GM? Also, I don’t have a sack or twine, but I could cut some rope to bundle the straw, if nobody else has something.
DM Carbide
Bundling up the straw from the upper level and burning it? Sure.
Arien Keyne
|
Arien cuts a pace length section from her hemp rope, splitting the weave to assemble a longer length of cord. Tying off a large bundle of straw with a long length of cord extending from the mass, she examines her handiwork. “I’m hoping most of the smoke will stay mostly confined to the chamber beyond. If not, we’ll likely have to either push through, or retreat back the way we came.”
Huc.
Huc shrugs and whispers, "I'll trust ya."
And he helps with whatever preparations the team is making as he watches the other room. "So what's the play? We throw this in and what for them to come to us? Won't they just retreat back the other way?"

There is no sign that the kobolds are doing anything but waiting for you. Nighttail looks with interest at what the party is assembling. "I like that idea. It'll at least put them off balance."

Arien adjusts her goggles, and takes a deep breath. Lighting edge of the bundle, she works her way up the path and lobs it just outside the tunnel mouth, the leading string wrapped tightly around her hand.

Master Temperance, if the turtles are submerged they're unlikely to be distracted by the torch. Flaming oil on the water, though....

Arien, you can see two kobolds, one on either side of the door. One is gagging and choking, while the other seems to be unaffected by the smoke. Both are holding guisarmes. The one who's still active is on the west side; you're able to close with it before it can react. Unfortunately, you miss it. It skips backward, chittering angrily, and knocks you to the ground with a lucky guisarme swing. DC 12 Reflex save or fall in the water. The other kobold wipes its eyes and looks to be ready to get back into the fight.

The smoke has largely dissipated. Arien pulls herself out of the pool, but not before two of the turtles nip at her again for 2 more points NL damage. She's unable to find her footing for her attack, and the kobold ducks out of the way of the blade.
The kobolds try to rally. One steps back and attempts to hook Huc's legs out from under him, but fails and has to drop its weapon to avoid falling over itself. The one across the pool hits Arien with a sling stone for another point NL damage, and the third steps back and chops at Arien for 2 HP.

The kobold is wounded by the good master's shuriken. As if that was a signal, the remaining two kobolds break off and flee deeper into the cavern.

Nighttail comes up behind. "I'm sorry--I couldn't fit Hak up into the fight. If you go down that branch--" She points to the east. "--you'll come to the armory. I don't think any of you but the du--the gnome can use the weapons, though."
Huc.
Oh, wait, and we came in here fresh this time. I can actually heal Arien. Sorry about that, Rowane, I thought we were more taxed than that.
Huc nods at Rowane's divine assistance, "Always good to have a holy man along." He steps over the highly-injured elf. "Hold still."
Once more he whispers old, rustic words, laying his gloved hands on Arien's injuries.

Sorry folks, been super busy.
Arien gasps as the healing energies wash away her fatigue. With renewed vigor, she readies to move again. “Where to, Nighttail?”
DM Carbide
The first half of the audit is done. They'll be back in two weeks, but in the meantime things have relaxed quite a bit here. At least for today.
Arien and Fynn pad silently down the cramped tunnel after the fleeing kobolds. The tunnel quickly widens after a few feet, opening into a chamber filled with a faint but sour and unpleasant odor. A single small pallet heaped with furs sits against the south wall, and from it emanates a sound like quiet snoring.

Arien, as you approach you see that the ground around the pallet is littered with dulled green scales. The pallet's occupant is a wizend and ancient kobold that appears to have shed those scales. It is not asleep, but its eyes are a uniform milky white. It does not seem to have noticed you, but it calls out towards the entrance where Fynn waits. "Are you the ones the others were fleeing? Good, good...you bring the destruction I foretold."
Nighttail starts. "Jakkol? I thought you dead from Roaghaz' treachery!"
DM Carbide
"Nighttail. I live..." The kobold coughs wetly, gasping for air, then continues. "...for now. My lord Vapula promised to scourge the tribe for their unfaithfulness. I had hoped to see our ruin before journeying to the afterworld, but I will settle for hearing you arrive. Beware the great scaly beast, strangers. He seems to speak reason, but his words are poison. And his bats, the ones he called from the darkness...they are harbingers of lunacy and chaos.... Dread Lord Aeteperax may yet be your doom, as he...has been...ours."
The last few words Jakkol spoke were quieter and quieter, and as he finishes speaking he takes a few more weak breaths, then grows still, a knowing smile still on his face.
