DM-Camris' SAVAGE TIDE: Chapter 3, The Savage Kraken's Wake! (Inactive)

Game Master Camris

SECTION 5.3: THE SECRET OF THE THUNDERER
Bodyguards to Lady Vanderboren, our heroes have refurbished an old pirate ship just in time to embark on a fateful voyage south.
Trapped in an awakened Sargasso, they seek the heart of it to escape!
"With sloping masts and dipping prow,
As who pursued with yell and blow
Still treads the shadow of his foe,
And forward bends his head,
The ship drove fast, loud roared the blast,
The southward aye we fled."

-Coleridge "The Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner"

Female Human Cleric 6 {HP: 37 /37 AC: 21}

Annie steps back from the creature and calls out to Cayden Cailean for his blessing on her allies around her.

Bless: +1 morale bonus to attacks, +1 morale bonus against fear (bardic music bonuses to attack are competence bonuses, thus they stack. The bonus versus fear doesn't stack, however.

The crew assembling to give battle look at Spinnaker Jon like he’s crazy, but they begrudgingly obey. They use pikes and bows, but don’t seem to make much of an impression on the creature.

Dgrim takes a shot with his bow, and you can see it slow to a stop just under the surface of the ooze.

Annie sings out a blessing of Cayden Cailean, giving heart to those facing this alien thing.

Avner, grinning with excitement, dashes in to slash at it. He lands a good slash.

Heal DC15:
That seems to be fully effective.
But he almost gets pulverized by the creature in return. Only the luck of the devil allowed him to escape as he rolls under the blow.

[npc] Ghirrak grabs a pike, and thrusts it deep into the innards of the creature.

Ghirrak:
You see it do some damage, but you also see the pike start to dissolve.

Bryson runs out on deck. Seeing the creature, he forms a sphere of fire and causes it to roll across the deck and make contact with the mass of flesh. The ooze hisses and blackens, and you could swear it flinches at the touch, but it continues to advance. You feel the ship heel a little more; fifteen degrees now.
You see Parrotless Booker dash up to the forecastle to the Ballistae and strip the tarpaulin off of it, starting to get it into action.

Profession (Sailor or Soldier) DC17:
He’ll never get it rigged in time, and the maindeck catapult is useless in this situation.

Spinnaker Jon shouts; “Tavey! Get a bucket of soap and water! MOVE!” Tavey breaks his paralysis and runs below.
Profession (Engineer, Sailor, Soldier) or Knowledge (Engineer) DC20:

You notice that the mainmast is leaning over the creature now.

"Ghirrak! Look above us...the mainmast is leaning directly above the creature. If you cut the cables holding it up, it should fall onto the ooze."

Ghirrak:
Ghirrak can see a bucket of pitch near the mainmast.

Hearing Dgrim's shout, Spinnaker Jon immediatly swarms up the ratlines to where the mainyard crosses the mainmast. He shouts for Ma-Koh-Toh and Monkey Jimbo to help, and they start up also.

Dgrim fires another arrow at the creature, with the same results. It sinks in, but does little damage.

Ghirrak spots a bucket of pitch, snatches it up and tosses it onto the creature. But without being warmed up first it flows sluggishly and does not spread this round.

[npc]Bryson sees an opportunity and sends his flaming sphere to the bucket of pitch. You can see the pitch start to ignite and the flesh of the thing start to blacken around it.

[npc]Annie and the rest of the men hold back, but it is a tense situation as the thing surges even further up the deck and Avner is shouting to attack. You can hear the women shriek belowdecks as the ship heels to 20 degrees.

Then, far far sooner than you would have thought, you hear a snap from overhead.
Spinnaker Jon shouts; "LOOKOUT BELOW!"
What seems like acres of canvas descend across the middle of the ship, partly obscuring the creature, then the mainyard descends like a guillotine into the middle of the creature. With a tremendous CRASH it plows down through the creatures middle and about a foot of maindeck. Only Ghirrak's trained reflexes allow him to avoid the same fate.

In the stunned silence afterward, you can see that about a third of the creature has been obliterated in the middle, leaving it separted into two creatures that don't have the reach or power the original did. But after a moment, they come alive again and continue to advance.

Avner roars out; "Now's our chance boys! Axes and cutlasses! Attack!" Keyed up, they respond to Avner's orders and with a roar, the crew surges forward...

Perception DC20:

You can just barely hear over the roaring Spinnaker Jon shouting.
"Wait! Avner hold up! Concentrate on one side at a time! #$%#&*( *()*#$@$ you Avner!"

Female Human Cleric 6 {HP: 37 /37 AC: 21}

Annie runs up behind Ghirrak and calls out a heartfelt prayer to Cayden Cailean.

Prayer: 40' radius burst (It will hit everyone but the far south blue dot(?) and "M"). +1 luck bonus on attack rolls (stacks with bless), saves, skill checks and weapon damage rolls. A -1 penalty to all such rolls for all enemies within range (both). No save. Lasts 5 rounds!

The blue dots are the mast trunks; impassable terrain.

With the roaring of the crew and the press of the frenzied melee, you see the forward ooze subdivide once, then two more times under yours and the crews combined attacks. Two of the small ones finally break like a bag of disgusting jellyfish; they stop moving and flow like sluggish muckwater into the scuppers and overboard. The crew send up a shout of victory!

But then, you all watch in horror as one of the remaining live oozes flow down through the deck grate... into the fore living space of the colonists! You hear the screams of the women down below redouble.

You also look aft and see the few crewmen there aren't doing nearly as well, two being slowly drawn into the creature.

>CLICK< for the tactical situation.

Spinnaker Jon slides down a rope and lands near the railing, slashing at ooze 1a; it quivers under the hit, clearly seriously damaged.
He points at you partners.
"You! Go! Get down below and rescue the women! You can put more force on it in tight spaces! Me and the crew will take these on deck!"
He and the rest of the crew swarm up over the fallen mainyard and sails to get at the aft ooze.
"Amella! We're at anchor! You can let go of the wheel now!"
You can see Amella up on the quarterdeck turn a bright red as she lets go the wheel, grab a cutlass and jump to power attack ooze 2; swearing at Spinnaker Jon all the way as the rest of the crew laughs.

IF you go with Spinnaker Jon and the rest of the crew...

To pass the Mainyard barrier, make a Climb check to get on the remains of the Mainyard.
If you can make an Acrobatics check DC25 you can grab a rope and swing to where you want (within a double move range). You can treat the whole deck as clear terrain, but it is a full round action.

IF you go below to rescue the colonists...

You see the creature has started to absorb two of the women, and has trapped a number of others in a far corner. You can see threads of read staining its underskin an it seems to be getting larger...

Bryson:

Dude I'm so sorry!
When you said "Bryson realizes that this is the perfect environment for a Call Lightning spell.",
I read it as; "Man, I wish I had Call Lightning, which I don't have yet." And waited for you to do something.

So yes, if you cast Call Lightning, you would have gotten off 2 shots at this point.
Bear in mind that for the purposes of the spell, the weather is "Stormy" even though it's only a dense fog.

ROUND 2—Belowdecks
____________________

GHIRRAK__________
In stony silence Ghirrak storms through the doorway diving forwrd into the vile ooze to grab at the women, attempting to drag them free.
Ghirrak sprints to the Ooze and grabs one of the women in an unbreakable grip. She screams and tries to break free of both of yours and the creatures grips, but fails.

BRYSON__________
Bryson pauses before going below decks to cast flaming sphere in the middle of the ooze above decks.
A five foot diameter flaming sphere bounds over the heads of the sailors and lands in the middle of the aft Ooze. The sphere sizzles and pops as the creature seems to … wobble … in agony. The stench of burning flesh floats to your nostrils as you turn and quickly hustle down the ladderway.

DGRIM__________
Dgrim double moves to reach the ooze.

ANNIE__________
Annie runs next to Ghirrack and tries to help him pull the woman away. "Get back!" she yelled. "Get behind us!"
Annie tries to help, but can’t find the right angle to get a good grip this round.

ENEMY__________
The creature, sensing resistance, lashes out twice with debris-studded pseudopods. (The women had been pelting it with loose equipment, which ironically made it even more dangerous.)
Attack vs Ghirak: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (3) + 8 = 11 Miss. The pseudopod flails uselessly.
Attack vs. Dgrim: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (20) + 8 = 28 Hit!

ROUND 3_____

BRYSON__________
With the portion of the ooze on deck getting its flame on, Bryson turns to the one below-decks. He concentrates for a moment and causes a bolt of lightning to strike it.
A sharp crack and flash hurts the eyes as a bolt of lightning hits the ooze, blasting a chunk into ash and making it quiver violently.

DGRIM__________
Dgrim retaliates with his axe.
Dgrim slashes his axe deeply into the ooze, causing even more damage.

ANNIE__________
Annie again tries to help the poor trapped woman.
"Get some soap, it keeps them from grabbing you!" she cried, still scrabbling at the woman's arm ineffectually.

(npc)GHIRRAK__________
With effort, Ghirrak pulls the woman’s arm free as she screams in agony. Her arm is covered in acid wounds as it slips free and she stumbles back. It doesn’t seem to him quite as strong as it was out on the deck.

ENEMY__________
The creature, trembling with agony and trying to recover it’s victim, lashes out twice more with debris-studded pseudopods.
Attack vs Ghirak: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (16) + 8 = 24 Hit! for 1d10 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 2 = 8. Dgrim is also Grappled.

BRYSON__________
Bryson again concentrates and causes the element of air to attack the ooze.
Another flash *CRACK* of a Call Lightning strike hammers the Ooze, blowing another chunk of it to vapor and throwing the girl who was being pulled in on the far side free (if a little cooked).

DGRIM__________
Dgrim struggles to finish off the ooze with his free hand.
But with one hand trapped, he is unable to maneuver his axe to effect and nearly takes off the arm of the woman Ghirrak is trying to free.

Annie grabs one of the buckets of soapy water several of the women were bringing and douses Dgrim. His arm comes free with a slurp.
Dgrim is no longer Grappled.

"Oh! That worked better than I'd hoped!" Annie cried excitedly. "Get more! More!" Annie searches for another bucket of water to free Ghirrak from the ooze's clutches.

She throws it on him if she finds one and has the actions left

Bryson slashes into the creature as his small, brightly burning elemental charges into it with a sizzling sound. The creature feebly shudders as a putrid smell fills the air, which is gently sucked out through the overhead grate.
Dgrim winds up and chops his way entirely through the ooze and into the deck, completely bisecting it.
Annie grabs another bucket of soapy water and throws it on Ghirrak, who pulls his arm free with an evil slurp.

The creature stops moving and slumps into a puddle of noxious liquid, random flotsam and driftwood.
