Varia Helensis |
Init: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6
Varia's attention had flagged, almost more preoccupied with keeping watch behind the group and observing her surroundings that she had followed them into the room last, and hung back through their conversation with Yilliv. Now that it was clear that there was going to be no avoiding this threat, though, her focus is clear and in the moment. They'd lost her for a moment in their puzzles, but combat, at least, is something she knows she can do.
She moves forward, placing herself between Asha and the creature, jabbing with her ranseur.
Attack: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (7) + 7 = 14

Round 2
Stricia's arms pass through fluttering papers and ribbon. The other attacks by everyone else do nothing to affect the scrivenite - passing harmlessly through the barely substantial outer layer of its form.
"Interesting.. interesting. I think I shall sample memories from each of you."

Erodel Voralius |
Will Save DC 16: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (7) + 3 = 10
Erodel attempts to take advantage of his flanking position and hacks at the creature again.
Falchion: 1d20 + 6 - 1 + 2 ⇒ (15) + 6 - 1 + 2 = 22 (power attack, flank)
Damage: 2d4 + 3 + 3 ⇒ (4, 4) + 3 + 3 = 14 (power attack)

1d20 + 5 ⇒ (15) + 5 = 20Confirm
2d4 + 2 ⇒ (4, 4) + 2 = 10Dmg
My...memories..are NOT up for sampling!!
Overcome with a bubbling rage he had not known, Bastargrae lunged forward in a fencers thrust with his hips dropping low and legs extending fully. His sword cane punctured the parchment body of the scrivenite viciously.
Stricia |
Flank grapple: 1d20 + 9 + 2 ⇒ (14) + 9 + 2 = 25
Stirica grits her teeth and tries, again, to get the odd creature under control, adjusting her techniqute to grab at the fluttering paper rather than trying to control a central mass.
Jacques "Indio Black" Jhaltero |
"While I do realize that this may just be your way, and as such will strive to not take it personally, I nevertheless must agree with my comrade. My memories are my own, and I will not share them."
Feint: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (8) + 12 = 20

Power Attack: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (13) + 6 = 19
Damage: 2d4 + 5 ⇒ (3, 3) + 5 = 11
DM Bloodgargler |
The scrivenite struggles as Stricia gets her arms around his form. The ensuing stabs and slashes shred paper and ribbon... a devastating assault.
"Aaah... I am free from my binding."
He dematerializes a moment later. Three lean tomes drop to the ground where he'd stood. Each bears a name on the cover... Bastargrae, Erodel, and Stricia.
30 minutes of reading will recover your lost intelligence point
Bastargrae Sweetgulp |
Bastargrae scrubbed at his eyes, sniffing angrily as the target of his ire simply popped out of existence. He started when three books dropped where it had been a moment before.
When he saw his name upon the cover, the gnome sheathed his swordcane and dove for his book. He clutched it to himself before cracking it open and scanning its pages furiously.
Stricia |
Stricia picks up her book as well though she has her mind on other matters. We must be quick about searching this place and leave.
Perception: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (7) + 10 = 17
Erodel Voralius |
Erodel likewise picks up the book with his name on the cover. Stowing the book for now, he nods in agreement with Stricia's assessment of the situation.
Perception: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (13) + 10 = 23
Jacques "Indio Black" Jhaltero |
"Indeed, our foes are now aware of our presence here and the longer we delay, the longer they have to set up their defenses.
Should we be forced to retreat, we may be unable to recover anything of worth, as they are sure to bring it with them or destroy it to deny it to us."
Jacques "Indio Black" Jhaltero |
"I am unsure if we want to leave before seeing this particular encounter thorough to the end.
We lack the element of surprise, but we are not without skills or resources.
It is inadvisable to leave a living enemy behind, especially when said enemy might not have our description while WE know nothing about them."
Stricia |
Someone who can summon and bind a being such as that might be too much for us to handle Stricia points out.
I have been watching this place for quite a while from an apartment across the street. It is from there that I saw you enter. Perhaps we can retreat there and see who comes? she suggests.
Bastargrae Sweetgulp |
I say we withdraw. I am out of extracts. We may well be better prepared the next time we encounter any opposition. I'd rather strike preemptively than desperately like a cornered rat that's been stabbed.
Bastargrae went to stand with Stricia, gesturing with his cane. She has a good idea I wholly agree with.
Jacques "Indio Black" Jhaltero |
"Keep in mind that they may posses some form of trinket allowing them to leave here without using the door, in which case we may spend quite some time waiting for them in vain.
Also, keep in mind that if they are the church of Asmodeus, they are the "lawful" authority of the town, and can easily be reinforced should we wait.
Furthermore, whatever information they may be able to abscond with is most likely something we can use and we would do well to deny them.
Finally, while I admit that our knowledge is sadly limited, and I am normally reluctant to advance in such a case, we may find ourselves in a situation like this many times in the future should we stay our course."
"Nevertheless, should you wish to withdraw even after I have raised these points and you have considered them, I shall bow to that demand."
Varia Helensis |
"Personally, I'm most always goin'ta opt for the path that let's me keep on fightin'. 'Course, Stuffy here-" and here, she motions to Indio. Nicknames already, isn't knowing Varia such an absolute joy? "-is making some good points of his own. You want to give Asmodeus an' 'is followers as little time to prepare as you can afford."
She crosses her arms, giving quick, appraising looks over those who had suggested backing off. "'Sides, if it's the fighting what worries you, you keep me between yourself and whatever it is that scares you. I'll keep it hard to get at you. 'Course, if you can help keep me on my feet, all the better, but either way, you'll have me doin' all I can for as long as I can still manage it."
Jacques "Indio Black" Jhaltero |
Seemingly quite unconcerned with being called "stuffy", Indio makes a great show of very slowly and carefully straightening his scarf, brushing dust of his lapels and checking that his hat is at an optimal angle.
Asha Ebele |
Not one to stand up to such force of personality, Asha acquiesces to Varia's pushiness, as well as Indio's well-reasoned arguments.
"Oh. Um, very well then. I can hold on for a little longer."
Jacques "Indio Black" Jhaltero |
"The first thing we should do is to proceed with caution. Listening at the doors and keeping an eye out for traps is generally the best way to start.
Even if they are forewarned that we are coming for them, does not mean we cannot attempt to be similarly forewarned."
DM Bloodgargler |
Erodel Voralius |
Erodel continues to advance slowly, falchion in hand, keeping an eye out for whatever inevitable trouble awaits.
Perception: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (15) + 10 = 25 (+2 if human related)
DM Bloodgargler |
The area at the bottom of the steps is the start of a long hall with stone support pillars every fifteen or so feet. There are four old oak doors.. one of which is directly to your left, and the other three are after a narrower hallway branching off to the left.
You can see the edge of a faint flickering light at the end of the hallway you are currently in - about sixty feet ahead... where it turns to the left.
You hear nothing more than your own footsteps at this point.
Erodel Voralius |
Erodel holds up a hand, intent on stopping the movement of the party. Turning back to his companions he says in a hushed tone, "Careful. We have company up ahead." while gesturing toward the flickering light.
Stricia |
Stricia nods Undead...? she whispers and adopts a defensive stance as she moves ahead to investigate.
Adopting Crane Style and moving ahead in a defensive posture.
Asha Ebele |
Asha nods, although the others cannot see her as she is positioned at the rear of the group, but she dares not make any sound. Instead, she calls the spirits' blessing upon the others.
Cast Guidance on as many as there is time, starting with Indio and Varia.
Bastargrae Sweetgulp |
1d20 + 10 ⇒ (12) + 10 = 22Stealth
1d20 + 10 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 10 + 1 = 13Perception
Bastargrae reached up to flatten his tophat, the odd headpiece folding in on itself to reduce his height. He tucked himself further into his poncho as he lightened his steps.
He sharpened his senses again at Erodel's signal, straining to pick up on what the human was alerted to.
DM Bloodgargler |
As you peek around the corner, you see a large lantern-lit room down a few steps. The first thing that catches your eye is a web of chains just above head height which meet in the center. Suspended from which is a body in drab robes, and in the center a many sided box of some sort hanging over one of three tables. An overwhelming stench of death wafts out from the room. Scraps of paper litter the floor, and smashed crates line the perimeter from what you can see in your position.
Erodel Voralius |
"What in the Nine Hells?" the ranger mutters to himself before quickly glancing at Stricia and nodding toward the center table. Erodel then enters the chamber, ready to cut down anything that would appear to wish him or his companions harm.
