Really liking the concept, but as far as I know Non-Clerics can't take sub-domains. I don't know this for sure, but it is implied. Anyone know for sure?

Apparently, someone asked Jason at GenCon, and he said that Druids and Inquisitors can't take subdomains. (That's the wording I saw -- not "non-clerics.") I don't know that there's anything official to link to as of yet.

EDIT: This is the best reference I can find. And here's the post on the HeroLab forums it references. Only Druids and Inquisitors specifically called out for no subdomains.

I couldn't find anything on it either in the book when I was thinking of the concept.

I'll just take the regular ol' earth domain instead.

There is a Cave Druid Variant though, if that helps.

I believe I'm UTC/GMT -6 hours. I forgot to put that down when I submitted Makoa.

Thanks for the suggestion but I see Flute as a more generic druid than an underground focused druid.

Sure, Flute feels home in the underground burrows of Janderhoff, but his attunement with the natural world is more generalized than just a strong tie to the subterranian natural world. (Especially since he was taught the druidic arts above ground by his Shoanti mentor).

I wanted to just have the an earth flavor aspect to a more general druid and I just think the underground druid takes things a bit further than what I want with Flute and his dwarven earth-themed druid concept.

Thanks for your advice though!

I apologize AK, but I'm here trying to let one of my players know about my own PBP.

Tanner, are you still interested in my Kingmaker game? Either way, let me know in either thread please.

Name: Aakif (pronounced ah-KEEF)
Race: Human (Kelishite; using Heart of the Wilderness alternate racial feature)
Class: Barbarian (Using the Mounted Fury archetype and focusing on the Ferocious Mount and Spirit Totem rage power groups)

Traits:
Boarded in the Mwangi Expanse (Bloodcove)
Savanna Child

Appearance:
Image
Aakif is a young human of middling height but with a powerful athletic build. He clearly keeps himself in excellent physical shape, although his muscles are lean and ropy rather than bulging obscenely. His coppery skin, black hair, and yellowish eyes show him to be of Kelishite descent, and the tattoos that darken the space below his eyes indicate that he was born to the nomads who live in the unclaimed steppes north of the Kelishite Empire. On the other hand, he wears only a thin mustache and a single strip of hair on his chin, despite the proclivity of Kelishite men to wear long, elaborate beards.

Personality:
Aakif is as proud and boastful as any young man from a warrior culture could be expected to be. He has considerable skill at both sword and bow and knows his way around animals like he was born to it (which, in fact, he was). On the other hand, he has had few friends in his life and is thus rather lonely. If anyone can convince him that they truly are a friend of his, Aakif would likely treat them as a blood-brother, above all doubt and recrimination.

He is also deeply superstitious, as his tribe restricted magic only to the single tribal shaman, who used it only in ceremonies and rituals to help the tribe as a whole. The shaman instead interpreted omens and signs from a variety of sources and prescribed herbal and alchemical remedies instead of magical ones. This has left Aakif with a very skeptical view of magic in general and makes him quite nervous when it is used around him.

Background:
Aakif was born into the Sun-Chases-The-Wind clan of horse nomads in the steppes and savannas north of the Kelishite Empire. There he was raised as a warrior, skilled with sword, bow, and horse. His people place great importance on their horsemanship, and Aakif was able to bring out the best in every horse he rode, winning every race in his age group easily. He seemed destined for a place of great honor in the tribe.

That is, until he hit puberty and the spirits came to haunt him. At first, no one connected the spirits to Aakif; after all, he was one of the most promising young men the tribe had seen in generations. Yet the fact remained that odd things happened around him with greater and greater frequency, and his temper became more and more unstable. At last the tribal shaman sequestered him in a ceremonial yurt and performed a divining ritual on Aakif for three days and four nights. At the end of the ritual, both Aakif and the shaman could clearly see the spirits of the dead that swirled and eddied around the young warrior. The shaman immediately sent for the chieftan, and after many hours of discussion, the two came to a decision: Aakif must leave, for the good of the tribe. The spirits of the dead were drawn to him, and any fool knew that where the dead trod, the living must be wary.

Aakif was cast out from the tribe at the age of 14 with nothing but a small pouch of trade goods and enough food and water to get him to the nearest city. The tribe were not cruel; they sent the tribe's strongest warrior to escort him to the edge of civilized lands, and no one blamed Aakif himself for the spirits' interest in him. Still, he had to make due on his own, bereft of the tribe's friendship and guidance.

He traveled to the city of Katheer, in northern Qadira, famed for being one of the busiest trade ports in the world. There, he was eventually able to find work as a mercenary, first for small caravans headed elsewhere in Qadira, then to other destinations in the Empire, and eventually overseas. He continued to work as a mercenary and sellsword for the next six years, using the little money he earned from this to gather his own weapons and armor. Between jobs he spent his time training, learning how to control, or at least contain, the spirits who haunted him. Eventually he learned that if he forced the spirits to be contained within himself, he could set them free for a brief time to dramatically increase his strength and endurance.

Eventually Aakif grew bored of the Kelishite trade routes and ship masters and set out in search of greater adventure. He gradually made his way westward into the Mwangi expanse, and when he heard of opportunities in Sargava, he spent some of his reserve money to purchase a berth on the Jenivere as it left Bloodcove.

Motivations:
Aakif's primary motivation now is purely adventure. He has been cast adrift from his tribe and has no home to return to; instead, he intends to see as much of the world as he can.
A longer-term motivation is to master the spirits who haunt him and prove that he is able to control them, so that he can return to his tribe and re-take the destiny and future that seemed so bright to him, only to be snatched away by adverse chance.

Black Fang! No one posted for like a week and I thought the game had died. I will hop over and take a look right now.

For your consideration:

Mahjid the Flink
The Kaptain did not really know what to make of the little impish looking but always smiling Vudrani he had found among the casks. Sure, he gets along with the crew just fine. And he scampers up the riggings like an old deck hand - even though he swears high and low that he'd never been to sea before. But then there are the odd pantomimes. Like when he saw one of the nobles flourish a rapier and perform practice drills - the little monk copied the performance to all intents and purposes flawlessly. What made it so exasperating was that he was copying the nobles drill at the same time as the noble was performing it - like a mirror! And to top it all off, he did it with a mop of all things! Lord Cathart had been livid - and the smiling little man seemed genuinely flustered why such a fuss was made. It was a blessing that Lord Cathart disembarked at the next port.

Even so, the little man had an uncanny knack for glimpsing out weapons - or just about any article - on a person and proceeding to perform some outlandish martial dance with it. But Vudrani must clearly not understand the principles of modern warfare and weaponry - he was holding blades back-to-front, used hilts as stilts, swirling sharp edges about himself in a dizzying display of recklessness. A little like a monkey that was too intelligent for its own good. At best unintentionally dangerous to self and others, at worst a disaster in the making; but it never went wrong. Uncanny. In fact, the one time some freebooting shacklers tried to board the ship the little guy was on the front line wielding a spyglass and a bucket with such lethality that the perplexed pirates were routed even before their assault on the Jenivere could begin in earnest.

Summary

  • Mahjid the Flink, monk of the empty hand
  • Human, Vudrani
  • Trait: Stowaway
  • GMT +2 (South Africa)

If you need a full character build let me know and I'll put it together (Mahjid exists only in my head currently). Also: what is considered legal for this pbp? Core and APG only? Anything that is fine for society play? Anything published by Paizo?

Oh, forgot my time zone, sorry. GMT - 5, US Eastern time.

I will be making choices tomorrow a little earlier than initially planned, as I am travelling tomorrow and will be unable to post in the evening. Wanted to give some advanced notice.

I may also expand the group to 6 players, as there are so many applicants. It would be awesome if someone else stepped up to run this too, so some of these characters get a chance at RP life, and so i'll feel less guilty about the many I will have to turn down.

Karma don't worry about your newness. Even if I don't pick you, keep posting concepts as detailed and well-written as that and you'll be snatched up quick.

AK, I just noticed this thread today (for shame, me!). I've been languishing since Sully's CotCT game floundered, and I'm DYING for something to do at work all day (my job is really VERY boring). So, I will get something together for you tonight, in the next five hours or so. Sorry to be jumping on board (no pun intended) late and making things even more complicated.

Aerodus

LG Paladin of Iomedae

GMT - 6

Background:
Son of a retired mendevian crusader, Aerodus was raised on tales of chivalry, heroics and valor. His eariest nights
of memory were spent upon his father's knee as he relived his days of glory; never one to interupt his elder he soon could repeat them by rote, complete with the parrys, thrusts and jabs. Once old enough, he too was was spending his time slaying imaginary demons whilst riding a figmentary steed. Yet all the while he played hero he would hear the
voice of his father, reminding him that it was not only the might of the sword arm, but also the strength of heart that let man triumph against demons. As he grew up he followed in his father's footsteps, joined the church of iomedae and signed up to serve in the mendevian crusades.

During his tour with the Mendevian Crusaders, he met upon a brave warrior; Bu'Tau 'Redshirt', so named due to the fact that by the end of any battle, he would be soaked in blood, with either that of his enemy or his own. A fierce fighter and a tenacious ally, Aerodus found a good friend in Bu'Tau,and could be found side by side not only in camp, but also in the thick of battle. However, one fateful day their unit was cut off from the rest of their troop and with enemies swiftly advancing upon their position; there was only one possible way out: Someone would need to become a suicidal rear guard, buying time for the remaining to take the wounded to safety. Bu'Tau volunteered for the task, forcing Aerodus to swear to return his family heirloom (a tigertooth necklace) back to his loved ones, and tell them of how he fell in righteous battle.

Finishing his tour and mourning his friend, he spent his funds first for the trip home to Cheliax, to inform his family of his travels, adventures and duty; but also to trade stories of his own with his father. Once completed he booked passage to the colony of Sargava to Bu'Tau's family to fulfill his oath.

Personality: Trained to honor and respect Iomedae as the center of his faith; Aerodus is a law loving adventurer. His once idiolistic beliefs on combat were shattered by his time spent battling the forces emerging from the worldwound. He would also be feeling out of place in Mwangi; being a holy warrior from cheliax, unknowing of the ways of the jungle but his experiences and time spent with Bu'Tau has lessend it somewhat.

Oh, all right, I'll take the hint. :)

I've been contemplating starting up another game for the last little while, and it looks like there's a lot of demand for this one, so I'll give it a go.

I won't be able to start till later next week though, so I'll let Alexander choose his group first and then I'll choose a group from those left over who are still interested.

I'm relatively new to pbp, but I think I've got a pretty good handle on things. If anyone wants to know what my games are like, feel free to check out my Age of Worms game. If you've applied for Alexander's game, but are not interested in being in a different group, no worries, just say so. I won't be offended.

Have fun!

Neutral and Good are preferred, but I can work in an evil PC if I have to. I find Lawful Evil works quite well, Chaotic tends not to though.

I was starting to lean towards Neutral with my submitted monk. He's going to be a Hungry Ghost Monk, and being Lawful Good just doesn't quite convey, ''I'm going to suck your soul out of your body.'' :)

Alright, Alex - I think this got rather long, but I was enjoying the writing and I couldn't stop until I was done. I hope you enjoy reading it to some degree or another.

If you haven't read the Campaign Setting's description of Hermea and have the opportunity to do so, it will probably be helpful to briefly scan it before (or after) reading my background.

I'm GMT -5 (USA, Eastern time). I can post multiple times a day (as you know), every day. I think in Sully's CotCT game I might have been posting TOO much, so I can dial back from that as needed.

Gwenyth Elyse Finley
Oracle 1 (Curse: Tongues) (Mystery: Life)
Trait: Jenivere Crew (and another that I'm not sure about yet)

OMG Background:
Gwenyth was born sixteen and a half years ago on the island of Hermea, in the City of Promise. At an early age, she demonstrated a love for flowers and medicinal herbs, and was quickly apprenticed, as is the way in the utopian society that is Promise, to a prominant Herbalist. Gwen showed a great deal of aptitude in her studies, and was highly regarded by her mentor and her peers for both her bright smile and her knowledge of Herbalism. Although organized religion was forbidden in Promise, Gwen often spent hours in quiet contemplation. She considered the plants and animals that she so loved - where they might have come from, how they did the things they did, and perhaps most importantly, how she had been so easily drawn to them. When she tried to discuss these things with her parents or her peers, she was quickly scolded and advised that her mind should be allowed to wonder only to the virtue of the Glorious Endeavor - the term given to the perpetual experiment in humanism that is itself embodied in the society and culture of Promise.

Gwen quickly learned not to ask too many questions about the source of her passion - at least, not out loud.

As Gwen's sixteenth birthday approached, she began preparation for her Test. This battery of exams would determine once and for all time whether or not Gwen would be welcome as a citizen of Promise; whether or not she would be permitted to spend her life achieving mastery over her chosen field. She felt solidly in control of her own destiny. She was well-prepared, and a leader of the apprentices in her field. Yet, on Testing-day, a strange and inexplicable thing happened.

Gwen began to get nervous, and the more nervous she became, the less she found herself able to continue the exams. The words her teacher was speaking sounded like nonsense. She asked over and over why the Test was being administered in a foreign tongue, but as the words came out of her mouth, her proctor became angrier and angrier. If she hadn't known better, Gwen would have assumed that she had been assigned to a foreign proctor who spoke a strange tongue - but there were no foreigners on the island of Hermea, and the woman giving her Test to her had been her guide and friend for the last 11 years. Gwen was hurt, ashamed, and humiliated. Finally the test could go on no longer - her mentor threw up her hands and left the room. Within moments, a wizard appeared. He muttered a few arcane words, and Gwen fell unconcious.

Had she been awake and present at the meeting that followed, she might have heard her teacher expressing her amazement at what she had seen, and her sorrow that Gwen could not complete the Test. She might have heard Mengkare himself, the Ruler and Arbitor of the Glorious Endeavor, comfort her longtime mentor at length before leading her out of the room. Gwen might have heard Mengkare pronounce his judgement to the Council, that she was deeply flawed and a known Thinker Upon Things Divine, that she was to immediately be banished from the island. She might have heard all these things, but she was asleep and dreaming her own dreams.

When Gwen awoke, she found herself on board a small ship. Several others were there, all speaking the unusual Language that her test had been administered in. After a day of exasperation at listening to them mock her (for what else could they be doing?), Gwen slipped toward sleep. As she felt her body relax, the last thing she realized was that she could understand her shipmates. They spoke of making a new life in Varisia, but they were worried about making it to the mainland. Sleep overtook Gwen.

Her shipmates were right to fear. She awoke to a roar, and an enormous flying creature plunging out of the air. Gwen had never seen a dragon before, but she knew from her books that this must be one. Within seconds, Gwen was underwater. The creature had completely destroyed the small craft. As she floated toward the surface of the water, Gwen saw a golden flame engulf the flotsam above her. The water was suddenly quite warm. She resolved to play dead, and forced herself underwater for as long as she could stand. When she finally emerged, she could make out a huge winged shape silouetted against the moon, flying hard for Promise. To the Hells with you all, then, she thought to herself. She grabbed hold of a smoldering piece of mast, and fell immediately into a bleary half-awareness. She floated, clinging to the mast, for days. She called out to the Heavens in her loudest voice, and somehow was kept alive. On the fifth day after the Dragon, Gwen sighted a large ship headed in her direction. Completely exhausted, she called out in the loudest croaking voice she could muster, and thankfully was heard. Again, overwhelmed by fatigue, she passed out. Dim memories follow - of hands reaching out and grabbing her to pull her aboard, of a ruggedly handsome sailor forcing water down her throat, of dreams that she still wishes she could forget.

When Gwen finally awoke, Captain Kovack was called. His words were few, but pointed. "I don't care where yer from, and I don't care how yer ended up floatin' in the middle of the godsforsaken ocean. What I care about is that yer situation be dire. Ye've got no coin tuh pay me fer passage on me boat - believe me, I looked - though passage I've already given ye. Fortune favors you today, though, fer I'm tirin o' Rambar's watery soups, and I'm assignin' you to him as a Cook's assistant. I'm hopin' ye can do better. Unless there's a problem with such an arrangement?"

After all she had been through, Gwen could only smile meekly and shake her head. "No. No problem at all", she whispered.

Gwen has crewed the ship as an assistant Cook since between the stops at Magnimar and Kintargo, where she was brought on board. Her motivations are aimed at fully understanding what is happening to her and discovering why the Gods kept her alive when she should have died. She is essentially going where life takes her at this time.

The RP possibilities for a Tongues Oracle were just too great to pass up.

You are using the wrong spin. Your character is in-fact a healer specializing in the realignment and correct flow of chi. That the process of healing happens to improve your own ki disposition is only a manifestation of the universe being in tune with your healing - a resonance reaction essentially. Lawful Good? Sure :)

Hi Alex, how's this?

Name: James Carmichael
Race: Human (Born in Sargava – raised in Varisia by the Shadde-Quah Shoanti Clan)
Class: Barbarian (NG – Invulnerable Rager Archetype)
Campaign Trait: Boarded in the Mwangi Expanse
Timezone: GMT

Spoiler:
Appearance: James is a rugged young man, used to enduring the harsh wilderness of northern Varisia. He is tall and muscular, a physique born of a highly active lifestyle, and his clothes are simple hides cut more for function than form. His hair is black and wavy, hanging loose to his shoulders, and his penetrating grey eyes sit nestled beneath an often furrowed brow. A thin pale scar runs from the bridge of his broken nose down along the upper line of his cheek, and his square jaw line is spattered with a hurriedly tidied mess of short cut stubble.

Personality: James is quietly confident man, deeply loyal to those he truly calls friends, but untrusting of those with more civilised backgrounds. He believes them to be fettered by their own self imposed assumptions and thus often incapable of following their hearts and doing what is truly right. Similarly, while James prefers to think of himself as a man of his word, this is more a decision based on the fact that he feels this is the right thing to do rather than any feeling of obligation towards the promise itself, and as soon as a promise violates his ideals it ceases to hold any weight for him. He’s not the kind to plan ahead, preferring to decide things impulsively, particularly in battle as he finds it more beneficial to keep his enemies on their toes.

Background: James’ earliest memories are in the arms of his adopted mother, a medicine woman of the Shadde-Quah Shoanti clan. She tells him that he was found on the rocky shores of western coast, cradled to the breast of a southern woman who claimed to be his mother. She was half drowned and starving when they found her, but the medicine woman took pity on the wretched young girl and her infant child, and had them brought back to the tribe. By some miracle James was remarkably healthy, albeit hungry, but his mother was on the verge of death, and did not last long even under the medicine woman’s care. She told them few things before the finally passed away, but she was awake long enough to tell them her child’s name and beg the medicine woman to look after him, a promise the Shoanti woman solemnly vowed to keep. The only other thing James knows about his origins, is that before she died his mother told them that they had come from Sargrava far to the south, and that his father Robert Carmichael could be found there.

As an outsider James had a troubled childhood, but he proved to be a fierce warrior, which earned him at least some grudging respect from the other tribesman, particularly for his incredible resilience to physical punishment. However, there were still many young ones who resented his position as the medicine woman’s son, and it wasn’t until the boy was sixteen that he was truly accepted by his tribe. A group of the tribe’s younger warriors led by the chief’s son had gone out hunting by themselves, and in the recklessness of their youth had attempted to take on a huge boar. As the beast lashed out in fury and frustration at the group’s attacks the son of the chief was knocked to the ground, and the creature seeing his moment of weakness ran straight at the young man. However, before it could reach him James had jumped into the creature’s path, not only taking the attack, but somehow stopping the boar in its tracks, giving the other warriors enough time to slay the beast. James almost died from the injury he received that day, and was saved only by his mother’s relentless efforts, but he had earned the respect of his tribesman once and for all for his bravery and might.

Eventually though, the day came when James decided he had to discover the truth about his past, how he had come rest upon the shores of Varisia, and who was responsible for his mothers dangerous journey north. So promising his mother that he would do his best to return one day, he caught a boat south to the Mwangi Expanse and has been searching Sargrava for the truth these past months.

Aspirations: More than anything James wants to find his father and uncover the truth about his origins, and if the man turns out to be dead then at least discover what became of him. However, he has promised his adopted mother that he will do his best to return to the clan safely, and he fully intends to do so when he has accomplished his task.

Gwenyth Elyse Finley (Jeremiziah), Life Oracle, Hermean Exile, GMT-5
James Carmichael (Stormchaser), Invulnerable Barbarian, GMT

Phew... That took forever... And then the post monster ate it... Twice...

GMT -6

Just to clarify- EST = eastern standard time (GMT -4).

Liberty's Edge

Karma Police, arrest this man! Greatest band in the world right there.

So, yup, I'm GMT -4, not -5. That's my bad.

Character name is hardest part for me.

My computer's telling me Eastern time is GMT-5. GMT-4 is Atlantic time; -3 is Buenos Aires and Greenland, -2 is mid-Atlantic, and -1 is the Azores and Cape Verde.

Dark Archive

Think I'm gonna sit this one out. Had a concept, but can see someone else got the same idea.

Good game to everyone who gets a seat.

Hate this part. Thanks to everyone for their submissions.I wish I could pick more of you but 6 is really my upper limit. The final six i have picked are-

Gwenyth Elyse Finley (Jeremiziah), Life Oracle, Hermean Exile, GMT-5
James Carmichael (Stormchaser), Invulnerable Barbarian, GMT
Flute Earthstriker (Karma Police), Dwarven Druid, EST
Tu'Nada (Talomyr)- Mwangi Ranger, GMT-5
Ambroze (Max Hellespont)- Gnome Archivist Bard, GMT-4
Chi T'reignial (Deevor), Elven Witch, GMT+0

Was a hard choice and there are a whole bunch of great concepts there- i hope the other two guys will step up and take some of you board the Jenivere in a parallel universe :)

Alternate slots go to-

Savarend Whiteroot (Tanner)- Dwarf Monk, GMT-4 (really wanted to say yes to this guy, but i felt the group needed an arcanist)

Lorenz Aeryson (Wander Weir)- Unlucky Sellsword Concept (Fighter), GMT -5 (loved the 'down on his luck sellsword' vibe i got here.

Link to discussion thread- please dot it and post to confirm your slot and interest.

I'm going to go feel horrible about rejecting people's concepts for a while now...

Edit: Yeah sorry about that Bruno, there are at least two other DM's thinking of recruiting from this thread though :)

*glares*

;)

No worries, it had to be done. Although a mass expedition to Sargava would have been awesome...

*imagines mass expedition while waiting for the other 2 DMs*

RPG Superstar 2013 Top 32

No need to apologize :)

Also, Jace has talked about running the campaign IRL, so Dr. Liven Ingots, Jr., Gnome Archivist may still see some action :)

Yeh he seems very keen to do that so I expect he will :)

To quote Leopold 'Butters' Stotch, "Aw, hamburgers!"

But hey, I'm an alternate in two games now. Not too shabby. ;)

The Exchange

Ah well, you certainly had lots to choose from.

I'm sure there'll be other games for me to try for.

Cheers

Is it bad if I'm still checking Alexander's list of PC's to see if Makoa made it?

:( sorry man.

Hi everyone. Congratulations to all who got picked for Alexander's game! For those who didn't, it doesn't have to be over yet.

If people are still interested, I'll go through those remaining this weekend and put together another group of 5 to 6 people. Then Alexander doesn't have to feel quite so bad for turning people down. Unfortunately, there are so many of you still left that I'll have to turn down some people too, but I see that 1 or 2 other DMs have also expressed an interest in running a group, so I'm sure you'll all find a place in someone's game!
