Rimkeening Crevasse C1

Monster Lore Spoilers for those who made the knowledge checks. Erland gets 3 spoilers and Anadrien gets 2 spoilers, plus the general info spoiler.

General information:
This creature has a stag’s body, a hawk’s wings and talons, and the head of a slavering wolf with a rack of sharp antlers on its brow.

Savage creatures of nightmare, perytons combine the features of stags, wolves, and great birds of prey. Though vicious beasts, perytons possess all the intelligence of a human. Perytons hunt any creature weaker than themselves, but prefer humanoid prey, as they particularly relish the taste of such creatures’ still-beating hearts.

Perytons mate once per year. The mating ritual is short, brutal, and in the end often fatal for the male. Afterward, the female lays a single, foot-tall black egg, which hatches 7 months later.

Special Attacks:
Horrific Critical (Ex) A peryton’s gore attack threatens a critical hit on an 18–20. If a peryton kills a humanoid foe with a critical hit, it can tear out the victim’s heart with its wolf-like teeth as a free action. Any creature that witnesses this savage event must make a DC 13 Fortitude save or be shaken for 1 round. This is a mind-affecting fear effect. The save DC is Charisma-based.

Shadow Mark (Su) As a free action, a peryton can make a ranged touch attack by flying over a humanoid target—the maximum range of this attack is 300 feet. If the peryton hits, its shadow transforms to match the shadow of the creature struck. Once a peryton has established this link, it gains a +2 morale bonus on attack rolls and damage rolls made against that target, and every time the peryton hits that target with an attack, the creature must make a DC 13 Will save or become frightened for 1 round. This is a mind-affecting fear effect. The save DC is Charisma-based.

"Someone help Anadrien--she seems to be frightened!" In case someone has Remove Fear or similar handy. "And the Dawn Piper is approaching!"

Dom is anguished as there are too many vulnerable party members to protect them all. He settles on targeting Elsbeth to try and give Erland and Rurik some breathing room. 5-foot step, full attack, spending panache on the first attack for added damage.

Also, since I cast a spell (or tried to) in the surprise round, I didn't have time to draw my morning star, so no AoO.

Erland draws a bit of sand from his pouch and flicks it towards the peryton, whispering the words to trigger his slumber hex. He then flies to the SW, getting behind Wapiti as he draws his icicle wand/dagger.

Dom takes a swing at the peryton as it flies by but the creatures tough hide prevents the blade from drawing blood. When he turns his blade on Elsbeth, he is more successful. In her rage, she is less cautious and leaves him some openings. A slash to her stomach and one to her neck gives her mortal wounds and she collapses. 34 damage. She is dead.

Erland's slumber hex causes a fine dusting to settle around the peryton. The magical beast succombs to the witchy magic and tumbles ten feet to the ground, which gives it its first injury. Take 4 damage, wakes up, is on ground, prone.

As the peryton is falling, a second one swoops down aiming its impressive wrack of horns directly at Domitian's chest. Just before it hits, a shadow of the beast passes over Domitian and then transforms to look like the swashbuckler instead of the shadow of a peryton. Domitian momentarily freezes and the horns gore him, driving deep into his chest before pulling out of him as the peryton flies on by and gains altitude to 20 feet, turning near the house. Domitian misses his chance to make an attack on the peryton as it flies on by him, his eyes wide with fear.

Domitian looks like Anadrien, getting ready to flee for his life from the powerful beasts. Crit on Domitian, 17 damage, Domitian is frightened for 1 round. FYI: if a character is killed by a critical on the gore attack, the peryton rips his/her heart out.

Currently, Domitian's header indicates he is down 13 hp. Is that correct?

Anadrien is up next. She is frightened until the end of the round and must do everything she can to get as far away from the Peryton that injured her as she can.

Then it is Rurik's turn.
Erland: Please indicate how far off the ground he is flying.

Anadrien (17 lethal, frightened)

Frightened:
A frightened creature flees from the source of its fear as best it can. If unable to flee, it may fight. A frightened creature takes a –2 penalty on all attack rolls, saving throws, skill checks, and ability checks. A frightened creature can use special abilities, including spells, to flee; indeed, the creature must use such means if they are the only way to escape.

Because Anadrien's turn is before Rurik's, she will have to double move before Rurik's spell can take effect. That will take Anadrien more than 30 feet from Rurik and Domitian. The fear effect will end at the end of Anadrien's turn, however, she will still suffer the penalties of the fear effect until the start of her next turn. Rurik can designate someone else to benefit from the remove fear effect in place of Anadrien.

Anadrien's supernatural fear of the peryton that injured her drives her to dash as fast as possible to the west, taking her into the path that leads to the giant tree that is the air font of the Dawn Pipers.

Joliphanta pounces on Rurik, biting and clawing at him with frightening savagery. One claw gets under his armor and rips his flesh. 5 points of damage.

All of Ingrit's arrows hit regardless, but I don't think range takes into account the altitude, just to avoid having to work out the geometry. I'd take it into account if the height were greater than the horizontal distance.

Ingrit's arrows all strike the body of the peryton that gored Domitian, causing a snarl of pain and anger from the beast.

Wapiti gores Mari but the momentum behind her attack is diminished by the fey's resistance to normal weapons, and his horns do no damage. However, the elk gets close enough to her while moving that she bites the mighty beast's shoulder.

Baccae have DR 5/cold iron. Wapiti takes 6 damage.

Zack picks up a large piece of firewood to use as a club and takes a defensive stance, terrified of the battle.

The Dawn Piper flies closer to the battle and speaks to Anadrien while she is still frightened. Her words are drowned out by the sounds of battle near the campfire, so only Anadrien can hear what she says.

Anadrien:
The piper says to Anadrien, "You have nothing to fear from me, friend." Anadrien has been affected by a Charm Person spell by the Dawn Piper. Unless countered, she will consider the Dawn Piper her friend, at least until Anadrien sees the Dawn Piper make any kind of attack on Anadrien or her allies.

Colt runs to join his buddies in fear and confusion off to the side of the clearing.

Mari rushes at Domitian with a savage assault, red of tooth and claw. She cuts Domitian with her claws, leaving rows of bloody wounds. 14 Damage.

The peryton that Erland's slumber hex grounded gets up and takes to the air again, circling north of the campfire, gaining altitude until she spots Anadrien, whom she marked earlier.

After Domitian badly wounds Mari, Erland causes an icicle to appear and thrust up near Mari. She avoids getting tripped by the attack, but suffers more wounds. Still, her rage keeps her going. Mari takes 6 damage.

The peryton that attacked Domitian wheels around near the house, flys past him, gets his antlers past Dom's parry attempt and stabs deep into his chest. It then banks hard to the left and flies east before turning to make another attack, blood dripping from his antlers. Peryton does 13 damage to Dom on a critical hit.

Ingrit adds two more arrows to the peryton heading for a repeat attack on Anadrien, one of them penetrating especially deep into the beast's chest. She does not yet kill it however, although it is very badly wounded. 28 to peryton 1.

Wapiti would have stabbed Mari if she had been a normal humanoid, but her fey nature protects her.

The dawn piper flies closer to the fight. Everyone is so focused on the perytons and the baccae that they don't notice her actions.

Ingrit:
While Ingrit is focused on attacking the peryton, she suddenly realizes that Domitian is a terrible lout whom she abhors with such intensity, that she instantly feels if she doesn't get farther away from her, she will be ill. She has failed to save against the spell Unadulterated Loathing. Role play this as you wish but try not to give away the reason. She might suddenly remember all sorts of things which the spell causes her to interpret in the worst possible way, making him seem either a horrible cad who would molest women and children or perhaps an evil, selfish individual who puts others at risk for his own personal gain, or someone who enjoys inflicting suffering on innocents and animals. I would say that because she failed the save, she will not connect this to the source of the spell, the Dawn Piper.

It's your call what Wapiti does in response. I'd say he would move toward Ingrit in an effort to protect her, concerned that she is upset by something. If you want him to remain in the fight, he must succeed in a DC 15 will save each round he is separated from Ingrit.

Since Ingrit is currently closer than 60 feet from Dom, until she can move farther from him on her next turn, she suffers the nauseated condition until she can get more than 60 feet from Dom. On her next turn, she can only take a single move action.

Mari continues her attacks on both Rurik and Domitian. She bites and claws and manages to sink her fangs into Rurik's flesh. 7 to Rurik.

The peryton that first hit Anadrien and marked her with its shadow, flies at her again, swooping past Erland who may make an AOO with his icicle wand tries again to spear Anadrien with her antlers as she flies by. But she misjudges her altitude and her horns swish past several feet above the elf's head. The peryton flies past, turning east and rising again to 20 feet near the wall of trees to the south, turning to fly at her again.

Domitian and Erland are up. Erland also gets an AOO at Peryton 1 if he wishes.

Domitian's first attack on Mari cuts across her throat, killing instantly. His second attack wounds Joliphetta but does not kill her. 14 to Mari, who is now dead, 17 to Joliphetta.

The other peryton, seeing its mate killed, flies at Erland in a murderous rage. The stag horns stab into his chest and face.

5 damage to Erland. Charge attack got a nat 20; the confirm threat roll was one short. It can't use flyby attack while charging, so it ends it's turn five feet above the ground next to Erland, although it is still flying.

Joliphetta continues her savage attempts to rip either Rurik or Domitian or both. Despite Domitian's attempt to protect the Cleric, the baccae bites him and tries to rip out some flesh. She otherwise meets only armor and air. 7 damage to Rurik.

Did Ingrit take a move action? I don't remember where she was before her turn started. She has to get 60 feet away from the target of her loathing to end the nauseated condition. She can take a move action each round. Where she is on the map now is just 40 feet away.

The Dawn Piper floats serenely above the fray, observing.

Domitian:
Domitian has been affected by a Reckless Infatuation spell. He feels a sudden need to be with Ingrit. According to the spell: "the target does all it can to remain within 30 feet of the object of its desire. If the target moves outside this range, it gains the staggered condition until it is again near the focus of its desire." So he can either remain in the fight and have the staggered condition or he can attempt to move to within 30 feet of Ingrit and deal with potential for AOO from the baccae. Also I have a question about one of the abilities listed on his character sheet, which I'll post in the discussion thread once I finish this post. See "House Rules" spoiler in the Campaign tab for a modified rules that replaces the withdraw action.

Domitian:
Domitian started the round with the staggered condition, which means he can only take a move or standard action, not both. If he is within 30 feet of Ingrit at the start of his next turn, he won't be staggered. So he wouldn't be able to throw the spear this round.

For reasons best kept secret for now, Domitian can't make the attack on the Peryton with the spear.

The ice spear juts up beneath Joliphetta, but she dodges before it knocks her down or does serious damage. 4 damage to Joliphetta.

The peryton turns from attacking Erland and puts all its effort into killing Domitian, attacking him with its antlers and its hooves. One hoof punches his side, causing him a moment of fear, but he keeps his composure. 7 damage to Domitian. She turns away just in time to avoid some of the tiny projectiles but she still is injured. 5 damage.

Immediately after this, the creature seems to melt into the underbrush again.

Ingrit:
Ingrit recognizes the creature as a twigjack, a tiny fey creature. Maladjusted protectors of the wood, these malicious fey constantly threaten any attempts to civilize the wild. Twigjacks delight in breaking wagon wheels from expansionists’ caravans, snapping hunters’ bows, and sabotaging isolated cabins and villages. Although they possess a keen intellect, few creatures, even other fey, can tolerate these twig-born creatures for long. Treants especially find twigjacks bothersome, and resent any suggestion that they are related.

They have a special attack, called Splintersray, which Ingrit just experienced. They can make this attack 3 times per day. They can move through light undergrowth as if via dimension door, up to 60 feet per day. They have a weakness to fire.

Domitian and Erland are up.
