The magic Baba Yaga wove in creating the original knights mutated and adjusted to the circumstances so as to maintain a strong team to locate and rescue her.

Strong sunlight lifted everyone's spirits after the darkness and cavelike interior of Artrosa. With fair weather holding, supplies replenished, and some new magic items purchased, the group returned to the magic hut.

It had settled into its location, adjusting the vegetation to make it appear as if it had been in place for decades. Stepping toward the front porch, they are met by the grim face of Ratibor the Bold, long ago forced to defend the hut whenever it was in the area.

Hadda tells him she can free him from his servitude if he wishes. He assents and allows her to enter the hut where she can prepare a draught that dissolves the enforced servitude to protect the hut. The gruff barbarian nods at Hadda as he feels himself free to do as he chooses. It is his only expression of thanks. He immediately strides forth into the woods, muttering about gathering an army to reclaim what was taken from him, unaware that 200 years have passed. He is big and strong and may find a new army and establish a human presence in the region again, if the plague allows.

The group enters the hut, which remains as it was when they left it. Zorka, the kikimora servant and house spirit of the hut, is sweeping the floor. She appears to be a hunched, old crone with a long bird’s beak, donkey ears, horns, and stringy black hair. She wears a peasant’s dress with a red shawl tied tightly around her wizened head, but these articles do not disguise her clawed hands or the scaly bird talons that are her feet. Those who met her when initially taking possession of the hut, Ingrit, Rurik, and Dom, know she is cantankerous and irascible, but loyal to Baba Yaga and hence willing to aid the group in their quest.

The spacious front room resembles the interior of a wooden cottage. Stairs to the right of the entrance climb to balcony atop which rests a wooden table. A wooden walkway continues around the room to a small landing and another set of stairs to the left of the entrance. A third staircase leads down from the walkway to an alcove opposite the door. Crates, boxes, barrels and other mundane materials crowd the space.

Those who were in the hut when it arrived know the way through a secret door, across a hall, and into another room. A sturdy black cauldron sits in the middle of this rustic room with timber floors, log walls, and a high ceiling framed by long beams cut from whole trunks. A grand cobblestone hearth fills one corner, its dying embers feeding the room with a dull red glow. Various barrels, farm tools, crates, and other miscellaneous items clutter the remainder of the space. In the corner opposite the fireplace, a rickety wooden staircase climbs to a small wooden landing. A shallow alcove off the landing holds two thick oaken doors.

As the group prepares to deposit the keys they obtained in Artrosa into the cauldron, Dom and Hadda begin to complain of nausea and vertigo. Zorka explains this can happen when inside the hut. She doesn't understand what causes it but knows the only cure is rest and time. There is a bedroom down the hallway that runs between the front room and the cauldron room. When first encountered, it was a haunt of a nightmare of one of Baba Yaga's daughters. The dream was defeated and the room is now quiet and warm. Zorka promises to attend to the two fallen heroes until they can be cured or perhaps succumb to the dimensional malady.

So the Riders number shrinks to six, who gather round the cauldron. A nugget of gold and a dragon scale are placed in the cauldron. A pulse of silent energy radiates out through the room which immediately shifts. Everyone experiences a sense of displacement as the hut’s interior warps and shifts before their eyes, then settles into a new configuration.

As the shifting ends, the group finds itself in a circle with a diameter of 30 feet and inside a gazebo. The gazebo has large windows set in delicate iron traceries that look out in all directions over a wide, gloomy garden. Thick clouds hang unnaturally low over overgrown stands of trees, barren flower beds, and white pebble paths. The sky and distant landscape seem peculiarly artificial, almost as if they were part of a faded and blurry watercolor painting. A large iron cauldron sits atop a round, marble-topped table surrounded by four white wooden chairs in the center of this circular room. A set of framed stained-glass doors to the south provide the only exit.

Those who have traveled in the hut know that they must explore this new area to find the exit that leads to whatever new place to which the hut has traveled. The exploration will be risky if the previous experience is any guide.

We are officially into book 4: The Frozen Stars. There are no immediate threats so everyone can cast spells if desired. Then venture out of the gazebo to explore the garden. There is a link to the map in the GM header. Adjust the zoom setting to see the large scale or to focus on the group location. Worn out. All of the fighting and hiding and hunting over the last few weeks has taken its toll. Even revolutionaries need a rest occasionally.

As a result, when the group re-forms after resting under Jadrenka's care, Rurik looks all the world like a grizzled herbalist, the kind of man who goes out and picks medicinal herbs in the woods and then comes back into town to make poultices and sell them to people who need a bandage to prevent infection of a scrape or a salt for soaking sore feet. A small coat of stubble lines his chin and his cheeks, and his traveling gear is worn and drab, with water stains around the edges of his cloak and mud stains on the toes of his fur-lined boots. Obviously he can't hide his shield, but he keeps it under a leather facing and wears it on his back—even a simple herbalist may need to defend himself from goblins in the woods, after all.
