I'm trying to give it more effort to give my characters more detailed back stories as well as distinct personalities. Like many people, I'm bad to slip into more or less playing as myself if I'm not careful. The nice thing about submitting characters to PbPs is that almost all of the people who post recruitment threads ask for some degree of character history and personality, so I get to flex my brain as well as work on my writing skills :)
Also, I wasn't trying to be passive-aggressive about the combat thing in case anyone was inclined to read it that way; part of my reason for posting was to do a "I'm still here" type thing.

Darn, I wish I had known these things had grab. Since you already went through a few rounds, it's obviously too late to go back and change everything, but for future knowledge, Tolla has some special grappling stuff from being a 2nd level Brutal Pugilist barbarian, and getting the Savage Grapple ability.
Essentially:
-Tolla gets AoO vs things trying to grapple her, even if they have the improved grapple feat or the grab special ability. If the AoO hits, she gets +2 to her CMD, which I believe stacks with 1) the +2 to her CMD vs grapple she gets from having the improved grapple feat (I didn't have that in my profile until just now, though, so that's my bad), and 2) whatever damage she does with that AoO, which is applied as a penalty to the CMB roll of anything trying to grapple her.
-She also only takes half the normal penalties from having the grappled condition.

I understand, don't worry about it. This is the first time I've made a character who can grapple, and I haven't been using it in fights, so I'm not going to expect you to know all the details of a build that requires a flow-chart to understand half the time! :P
As far as backgrounds go, I like them better in a PbP setting. As a new PbP GM, I like them as a sort of writing screening. Length matters often, but it's definitely not everything. I've accepted some shorter backgrounds because I liked the writing style, and generally I find that those ones are people playing to type, and doing it well. Longer ones tend to be better than shorter ones, but I've seen some lengthy ones that were poorly written, or that embraced a kind of narrative that I personally found problematic. And there are some that are long because they're long-winded and not very narratively interesting. I'm still working on writing good background for my own characters, because I generally work on character creation from a more face-to-face gaming perspective, which is to say that I focus more on personality and mechanics. I don't want to write a hugelong backstory in a setting where no one is going to read it or react to it. I generally haven't played in any meatspace games that dealt with complex character growth or background story plot incorporation.

I struggle with backgrounds in that I feel the need to do something slightly different with each one and I often try different things. A long time student of prose I find that length is merely another tool that only has as much value as the way in which it was used. Different GMS want different things so I personally struggle with wondering about the audience, which can be counter productive.
Frankly some of my proudest writing is short but I think it conveys plenty.
Plot points and background details can be weird. I want to give GMs things to work with but I agree that PBP lends itself well to incremental revealing of characters as players can fill gaps in time with text where players at a table might not spend the time "developing" characters. I think that takes the pressure on thrusting too much narrative behind a concept.

Sorry guys, I promise I'll make some adjustments to Relas and how he functions if Palo lives long enough to make it to next level! She's seen some action obviously, but this is the first time she's really been in a position where she's realized that having Relas around 24/7 would be a *really* good idea >.>

Have Abbas or Palomia shown any obvious signs that they're not human yet? Not that Tolla can notice at just this moment, but she would certainly react to it.
Abbas Majidi
Nope, the only two tell tale are the fact that I am basically immune to most mundane and even most extreme weather and minor energy effects (Resitances @ 5) and when I use the Suli "elemental assault" ability...the first could be attributed to general toughness to a certain extent...the other is showy, but I haven't used it yet.
mdt
That requires a point of magic power to power for the day. So do the resistances (basically anything Su). Not that Abbas probably noticed, since I don't think he has more than 3 supernatural racial abilities.
Abbas Majidi
Just the two and since nothing has really tested his resistances it probably hasn't occurred to him yet that it is anyway impaired. Sort of a "not thinking" problem with magic in that he never has had it even though he is magical. First time he gets cold or too hot it will catch his notice though.
mdt
Not really, you see, unless you're trying to run more than you can, you don't even notice the lack of magic. So, Abbas's body automatically allocates his magic unless he intentionally tries not to.

Yep, then a few more days with some daily healing from med kits should help as well.
Oh, and don't forget to take rations off for all the days you're travelling without using survival checks. (You do have the lizard meat, if you drug it along, you could boil it in salt water to make it stay good for a week or so).
Tolla Eberhart
Sorry, I was busy yesterday with moving the last of the stuff out of my apartment. It took longer than I thought. Moving is blech.
mdt
I'm assuming you're going to all camp out on the dock until fully healed? In which case, whoever is doing the healing checks can do those. Can't take 20 on the healing checks, there's consequences for failure (extra damage if you fail by enough). Taking 10 is ok though. And you do have the med-kits. Remove as many rations as you need to for the time (after consuming the lizard meat you drug back). I believe you could have carried two lizards worth of meat, so that would be about 5 days of meat.
You can RP about camp, or we can fast forward, up to you.

Went through our stuff from the pallet and assigned weights to things (lump sum, not each). Some stuff I couldn't find in the d20 SRD, though.
Tolla Eberhart
Here's the list of questionable things:
-Candles have no listed weight, but we have 40 of them.
-I could only find canvas units in square yards, no weight
-Chalk has no listed weight, but we have 20
-Mercenary's Kit: couldn't find it
-Miner's Pick: couldn't find it
mdt
Mercenary's Kit is a Fighter's Kit. The original owner was in the other group and took a fighter's kit instead. He had refluffed the fighter's kit a mercenary's kit.
Miner's Pick 10lbs
Canvas (Sq Yd) 1 lb per square yard
A stick of chalk actually weighs about .18 ounces. So 20 are 1.8 ounces, which is about 1/8th of a pound, or 0.125 pounds. In other words, practically nothing individually. Maybe two pounds for all.
Assuming it's a 6" candle, then we're probably talking about 2 ounces per, or again 1/8th of a pound. Or again, 0.125 pounds. Same as chalk.
Remember, we're talking about those big thick chalk sticks, not what you used in school. So, call it four pounds for the candles.

I'm sorry folks, been sick for most of the week. Been trying to keep up, but as the week has gone on, it's gotten harder and harder. I'll do my best to post a few times a week until I'm over this.
Gniel
Which pattern should we take guys? Counter-Clockwise spiral? or move by each lettered row?
Abbas Majidi
Sorry for my lack of posting, I haven't been able to get onto the site until now? Anyone else having that problem?
Tolla Eberhart
So, what do you all think are the chances that we'll be able to find civilization any time soon? Should we poke through the edges of this Big Hex to see if one of the ones around it are, like, City World instead of all this Savannah stuff?
Abbas Majidi
Its not a bad idea, my only argument against is that we saw pieces of "stuff" from other people but who knows maybe everyone comes into this hex from others then gets eaten by all the stuff lurking in the grass! :p
Gniel
I would say that if there is a civ in this hex, it 'd be close to the middle.
Abbas Majidi
I've been fighting crud off too so rest up mdt, I think we are all pretty well hooked and invested so no risk of losing us I think :-)
Tolla Eberhart
I'm just hoping that wrestling a giant scorpion is a good idea. :)
Tolla Eberhart
Someday Tolla will be a better grappler...one more monk level and then all of her planned levels will be considered full BAB for combat maneuvers.
Edit: Hot dang Grease is good. And I don't think it impedes my own offensive grappling either. Maybe I'll just punch the scorpion instead, though...
mdt
Oh, interesting fact for everyone regarding the world, to give an idea of size.
Each of the small hexes is about 12 miles across, which means each small hex is about 124 square miles.
Each large hex (the kind with the black walls) is 120 miles across, which is 12,000 square miles in size. That's pretty much the size of Maryland.
Tolla Eberhart
An interesting fact about my world: I mostly grew up in Hawaii (and also have a terrible sense of direction), so I don't have a good sense of how big any given state is. Especially all the squiggly east coast ones.
mdt
Hawaii is a little over 6,000 square miles, so double the Hawaiian Islands, and you get one hex.
Then multiply that by 76 to get the entire world.
The entire world is about half-again as big as Alaska.

1 person marked this as a favorite.
We'll just have Gniell build us a train!
Abbas Majidi
What?!?
Its just every day, completely normal, explosion of elemental force covering large parts of my person..I'm a human! I swear!
Tolla Eberhart
Hey y'all, sorry for the absence. It's been a mix of fatigue and work and not feeling so hot, but I'll try to get some posts up soon.
