Cost of Livestock

On UE page 81 (animals & transports), a chicken is listed as costing 1gp. On page 93 (trade goods), a chicken costs 2cp.

Why the 50x difference in price within the same book?

Which price is correct? I'm inclined to think the higher one since p95 lists meat at 3sp per half pound, which is more than the whole live chicken, but this is confusing.

Similarly, page 81 gives a price of 50gp for cattle, while page 93 gives 10gp for a cow or 15 for an ox. The cost for a sheep is 20/2gp a pig is 20/3gp, and a goat is 6/1gp.

Trade goods are sold in group, so essentially it's with discounts. Like you can buy a single healthy and good chicken for 2 gp. Now if you want to buy 100 chickens, you'll go to the trade goods or someone willing to sell that many chickens and buy them at 2 cp each. Still the price difference is massive and might need some adjustment.

Essentially: The economy is broken, and it has been that way for a very, very, very long time.

This does seem to be quite a problem. I mean, when the magnitude is by an order of 5 to 50, this is a problem. Just go with the higher value, since it seems like it works better with the price of meat. That seems like it is the one that usually has actual relevance (I mean, a barbarian walking into a bar is more likely going to order a slab of meat rather than a whole chicken....actually, that might be an awesome idea for a character, but that is moot). It vaguely looks about right for a price considering the size of each animal.

I don't think it's a group discount. It says "The listed price is for one live animal," not per animal in groups of 100. It also says the purchase may include a short rope or bag for leading or carrying "the creature" singular. While it says "trade goods are usually bought or sold in larger quantities than the amount listed" it doesn't specify any discount for doing so. Plus the suggested quantity is 10-20x the listed amount (10-20lb bag of potatoes), which is way too small a quantity for an 83-98% discount.

I know the economy is broken, but I'd still expect at least a little consistency in pricing within the same sourcebook.

And the first PF game I played in did feature a half-orc barbarian chef, so the live animal price may be relevant.

It is bizarre why the price differences is so drastic. I would opt for the prices listed under the animals table instead of the trade goods. I mean, 2 copper pieces for a live chicken? That's a hell of a bargain, especially from the perspective of a commoner. 1 gold piece for a whole chicken seems a lot more reasonable.

CB out.

I am pretty sure you can't even buy a mug of beer for 2 cp.

The price of coin doesn't go much lower...

A mug of ale is 4 copper pieces. Consumables such as alcohol often have a higher than normal price because the vendor can afford to charge it. After all, where does one normally buy a mug of ale? At the tavern, inn, etc., not with the local brewery.

Unfortunately, Ultimate Equipment does have a pretty large number of errors in it so it is not unlikely that they made an editing error. When in doubt, use common sense. That's pretty much the advice given by the designers for small inconsistencies. Otherwise, we have to wait until the next printing of Ultimate Equipment.

Higher prices it is. Thanks.

If it matters, the CRB has the prices for 3rd edition if I remember correctly, but I have no idea why they changed it. Likely it won't shatter the game into a billion pieces if you use the old ones.
