Why isn't "fighting defensively as a standard action" a dodge bonus anymore?

Rules Questions

1 person marked this as FAQ candidate.

So in 3.5 both "fighting defensively as a standard action" and "fighting defensively as a full-round action" are both a +2 dodge bonus to AC.

However in Pathfinder the full-round version is STILL a dodge bonus, but the standard version is no longer a dodge bonus, just an untyped bonus.

Why is this?

That's got to be a typo, it should be a dodge bonus as well. Weird that it hasn't been addressed previously...

The PRD might not be updated. Anyone have the latest printing of the CRB and willing to check?

It must be a prd typo.

My book (1. printing) writes "a +2 dodge bonus to AC".

If you read through the Acrobatics skill, you will find both listed as a Dodge bonus.

Looking at the page source there's an extra space after "+2" and before "to" which means maybe the 'dodge bonus' part got lost in a broken markup link.

"all attacks in a round to gain a +2 [space] to <a href="#_armor-class" >AC</a>"

Compare to Fighting Defensively as a Full-Round Action:

"attacks in a round to gain a +2 <a href="#_dodge-bonuses" >dodge bonus</a> to <a href="#_armor-class" >AC</a>"

Hmmm my second printing of the CRB also does not say it is a dodge bonus. I don't have the latest one handy.

Fighting defensively as a Standard Action grants a +2 dodge bonus according to p. 184 of my 5th printing of the CRB.

Fighting defensively as a Full-Round Action grants a +2 dodge bonus as well, p. 187 of the same book.

Weird how first and fifth printing say that while second and online don't >_<

Makes no sense that it wouldn't be a dodge bonus, so ill continue to do that until told otherwise.

Perhaps so it doesn't improve CMD?

As per Acrobatics skill description.

Special: If you have 3 or more ranks in Acrobatics, you gain a +3 dodge bonus to AC when fighting defensively instead of the usual +2, and a +6 dodge bonus to AC when taking the total defense action instead of the usual +4.
