Elemental Spells

Advice

Hello all! I've been playing PFS for just under a year now, and I've made an elemental Sorceress that I'd like to play with, but I don't know many good low-level elemental spells.

Obviously, I'm going to want Burning Hands, and I'll want to get things like Fireball and Lightning Bolt once I get high enough level, but are there any other recommendations? It doesn't have to be limited to damage spells, either - Fly seems like it would be an appropriate Air spell, for instance. I'm just looking for spells to fit the 'elementalist' theme.

Suggestions would be welcome for any element! Thanks for any help you can provide!

The thing about Sorcerers is you should not dedicate your entire spell list to blasting. Look for some good spells that can be used for a variety of reasons.

For Example Glitterdust.
Not only is this an AoE Blinding spell but it also cancels Invisibility. It also does not have Spell Resistance and can get around some monster defenses. So the spell really helps in a multitude of situations.

As far as blasting that is up to you. I recommend choosing an element other than Fire as your Element. Lightning and Acid would both be fine picks. The most resistant element is Fire. So being able to change your Fireball into an Acid ball or a Lightning Ball will help you get more out of your blasts.

A few utility spells you may want:
Fly- Not just for you but an archer with fly can solo combats that the enemy has no cover or ways to return fire. I have victimized a many DMs with this spell.

Grease- You can make difficult terrain, Grease an ally or self to escape a grapple, you can make enemies drop weapons. This is a versatile spell much like Glitterdust.

Glitterdust- Hands down one of the strongest spells in the game.

Dispel Magic- Remove an enemies buff, attempt a counter spell, Dispel a magical trap...this has it's uses.

These are just examples but look for spells you can make the most out of in multiple situations. Have a blast or two per level is nice. But blasting sometimes is not the answer and sometimes completely useless against some foes.

Scarab Sages

Fire is the most commonly resisted damage in the game. Electric is good for most things, but demons are completely immune to it. Undead are immune to cold, but fire takes double damage from it. Acid is less resisted than other energy except sonic and force.

Yup.

I totally want to make a force mage for my next full arcane caster. I have been noticing a few newer spells coming across the Wizard list I would love to build up. Toppling Force Sword given to a fighter seems like a good time to me.

That doesn't work, the Force Sword spell doesn't do any damage directly, so there's no way to apply the metamagic. Note it has an effect of creating a sword, not a target it effects. It's the same as trying to apply Enlarged Spell to a Summon Monster X in order to give its melee damage a 50% boost. The spell effect is doing the damage, not the spell directly.

Oh, I figured the 1d8 damage the sword does is the damage from the spell. Much like a spiritual weapon but now in the hands of someone whom can use it. It also has to bypass spell resistance and such. But

Oh well, there are some other ones out there that would be fun still. Plenty of Force spells on the list.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Snowball is also a great low level spell that hasn't been mentioned for some reason. conjuration spell that doesnt allow for SR, yes please! burning disarm, damage or drop weapon? either works for me. Shocking grasp is a good spell if u end up in melee without much else to use.

Thanks for the input!

Like I said, I'm not JUST looking for blasting spells, and utility spells that can fit an elemental theme are definitely welcome. I had already planned on Fly, and Grease is a good option I hadn't considered. Not sure how Glitterdust or Dispel Magic would fit in, though...

I'm aware of Snowball, but I don't actually own the book it's from, so I can't use it for PFS. I didn't know about Burning Disarm, which is a good suggestion, but I have the same issue of not owning the book. I may have to look at buying those once I get some extra money. Shocking Grasp is good, but I REALLY want to avoid melee with this character...

Any other options people can think of?

Just look at the Elementalist wizard spell list in APG

Flavor glitterdust as an earth-themed spell (creating tiny flecks of airborne mica) or a fire-themed spell (creating smoke and embers) or a water/ice-themed spell (creating spinning crystals of snow and ice) and it's on theme.

Dispel magic can similarly have some elemental flavor, such as the spell being dispelled burning away in warm (but not harmful) but visible flames.

My elemental sorcerer (air) picked grease and color spray as my first 2 1st lvl spells. Color spray will be swapped out at fourth for magic missile. Zeros are acid splash, detect magic, and disrupt undead. You get burning hands (doing your elemental types damage) for free around 2nd or 3rd lvl. My next known 1st lvl spell will be snowball. First 3 feats (human so 1st 2 I got at lvl 1) are point blank shot, toughness, and at 3rd precise shot. After that my feats will be whatever I need/want such as improved initiative, etc. So while he is a blaster style sorcerer after in a few lvls, first few lvls is more crowded control. Later lvls I will still take CC spells, fly, haste, etc. Options are always important, not just blasting stuff.

Sorry, typing on phone and about to go to bed, so again sorry for double posting and for the typos.
