Shadow Creatures

Council of Thieves

Sovereign Court

I am running Bastards right now and am at the point where I can run the optional encounters for bonus XP and Fame Points.

One of the encounters is initiated by "Bluehood" and requires the party to defeat a shadow creature and place it's body in a specific place.

My issue is that the only shadow creature in the adventure does not leave a body when it dies, it's body dissolves into shadow and fog upon death.

I know I can hand-wave the dissolving body thing, I only want to use that as a last resource with modifying a higher level creature as the CR 10 Shadow Demon being just before that.

Any suggestions on another shadow creature to use?

Shadow mastiff comes to mind. (Bonus Bestiary, CR 5)

At the risk of self promotion, may I recommend perusing the free PDF Creature Codex: Monsters of Twilight? In it, you'll find a number of shadow-themed creatures from CRs 2 to 8, some of whom saw their first drafts as my fleshing out encounters in Council of Thieves.

Here are some prior suggestions. I think every CoT GM has been through this. Hope it helps, and good luck!

CR5 shadow mastiff is also in CoT V3 (#27) What Lies in Dust, p 27 if you don't have the Bonus Bestiary.

Wow, your PDF is awesome!

I did a poor search thanks for the link.

I mostly found it strange that they included a creature that leaves no body when it die, and yet have a side quest that requires a body. Sure you can use a different creature but most are more than a little tough for a low level party (figure the party is level 1, maybe just got level 2).

Thanks for the kind words regarding the PDF! Glad it's seeing some daylight still.

In my game, I changed things so that the shadowgarms left behind something, even if it wasn't a conventional corpse. I had their shadowy essence coalesce into a tiny blue-black stone, recognizable as shadowstuff to a trained eye but just being an interesting rock to anyone else. Made them worth 10 gp per HD of the shadowgarm, for that tiny added economic incentive.

Ya. I could do that, but I also wanna use them as disappearing corpses. Thanks for the .pdf though.
