Virtu-Frens are an idea to be an updated version of hirelings. Virtu-Frens are sentient programs looking for a place to stay, and willing to work for power and server spaces and credits. Some are installed in specific expansion bays or in battle stations, but they all give special benefits.
Like a Marketing Fren living in your Data Center, edits video feeds, moderates chat/forums and generally gives you a small bonus when you earn income by streaming.
an EMH would be living in a medbay and be able to perform medicine checks with a decent stat.
Astro-Fren is one who is an astronmer by trade and wants to see more of the Universe, so is installed in the Scanner station, and can maintain watch while the crew sleeps.
They also have social rankings, and if you cause your social ranking with your Virtu-Fren to go negative, they may leave and cause problems when they do.
Can I suggest that you call them something else? Channer slang has, y'know, a certain amount of unpleasant baggage.
