Dark Matter.
Dark matter, I think, is another form of matter that links emotion and energy in the process. Inspiration, thought, emotion, energy, gasses, liquids, solids, ect. While dark mater may have it's own big bang, ectoplasm, and ether possibly did not. There can be infinite other forms of matter all with their own slightly different history and rules.
Every plane has slightly different matter. Different subatomic particle/waves. Different histories. Even different natural laws.
Spells and devices can detect the origin or type of matter. Thus a ghost's ectoplasm can be detected, as well as their alignment.
