No advanced weapons for soldiers?

Like the subject says, I can't see where soldiers get access to advanced weapons which is where most of the area weapons are. It appears operatives are the only ones with access to advanced guns. Am I missing something (which is actually highly likely)?

Thanks!

Right now the only way to get them is operatives or using the weapon training general feat, which on everyone but casters has reduced proficiency.

You don’t need proficiency for area or auto fire, but Primary Target will suffer. For now I think advanced weapons are only useful to casters, envoys, and solarions (Solar Flare bad!) who want an area fire option, or casters willing to spend two weapon trading feats on the Aeon Rifle.

It's possible I'm missing the point with this design, but why does the heavy weapon class not get proficiency with heavy plasma cannons? Is it just that they have to wait until level 3 to get the feat?

Advanced weapons are something of a problem child in the 2e system. Getting proficiency has always been rather spotty. Honestly I'd have just have soon seen them be left out entirely and limit everything to just simple and martial.
