If I cast a wall spell that is 5 feet thick and 30 feet across, and place it on the grid diagonally, does it fill 4 squares, or 6?

Fun factoid: calculating that the diagonal across the square takes up 1.414 "length units" compared to the side is something people have been doing for at least 4,000 years. We see the calculation done on Babylonian stone tablets. But probably not for role playing games. :)
