Remaster what ranged attack to pass?

This provides the range and the DC for the check, but it doesn't explain the modifier for the check. I assume it's a Dexterity check as normal for ranged attacks, but is there a proficiency bonus, too?

If the item isn't meant to be thrown it would probably be covered by improvised weapon rules, whatever proficiency they fall under. If it's intended for throwing, like a ball or something, just go with how complex it is
