I’d heard about this show here and there, but after The Critical Drinker praised it I decided to give it a try. I’m only two episodes in, but I’m glad I did.
It’s a great series so far. The animation is fantastic. The voice cast is impressive (including the always magnificent George Takei, Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa, and Kenneth Brannagh). The story is set in the Edo Period, when Japan was closed off to foreigners, and follows a half-white/half-Japanese female samurai in her quest for revenge against her white father.
It’s the type of story I’ve really come to enjoy over the last several years - that mix of history and fiction. The main characters are all really interesting, with compelling storylines. The writing is really good, introducing the major story and various characters with a minimal of fuss. As previously stated, the animation is really awesome.
I would encourage everyone to watch this great series.

I’m not into anime but I was bored.
1-5 were good
6-7 a little less so
8. Bad, will not return for a second season.
Having finally finished all of season 1, I find myself partly agreeing with you. Episodes 1-5 were, I thought, damned good.
I like some of episode 6: the backstory was interesting when juxtaposed with the puppet show, but I thought the fight against the 1000 Claws was a bit silly. Parts of this episode felt more like Kill Bill.
The same with all of the episode 7. It felt like something directed by Quentin Tarantino.
Episode 8 was disappointing, from a story perspective. I just don’t see guns of that period being that much of an advantage. From what I recall, they weren’t always very accurate. And then you have the time to load the weapon. So the ease with which the takeover happens was a bit silly. And I don’t thought there’s no way Fowler would allow himself to be put in a cell. Also not too happy with the idea of London next season. I’d have much preferred staying in Japan.
Still, I’ll probably at least give season 2 a try. If only because I don’t foresee much else in the way of shows I want to watch.

I'd have to go back and rewatch to remind myself what I liked and didn't about Season 1, but I'm glad to see they're finally moving forward with the second season. It gives me something else to at least kind of look forward to.
If nothing else, the short piece from what looks to be the opener of season two has some great animation and cool action sequences.
