Attacks that force saving throws

Rules Discussion

Sage's Curse and the Dire Wolf's Worry have the attack trait, but it's the target who has to make the saving throw rather than the user having to make a check. The multiple attack penalty clearly should not be applied to the saving throw. Should it be applied to the DC? If not, then what's the point of giving the effect the attack trait?

It's likely a typo, some attack spells also don't have the attack trait. If you want to get technical they would progress your multi attack penalty but wouldn't get effected it by it, as they don't have you doing a check.

Yeah, they're not applied to the DC. It just progresses the user's MAP

The Dire Wolf Strikes then Worries with no MAP? Sure. The Dire Wolf Worries then Strikes with no MAP? Woah, slow down. That's way too poweful.

The Attack trait means that after using the action, the character that used the action will have their MAP increase by one stage.

So Dire Wolf Strike (at MAP 0) then increases MAP to stage 1.
Dire Wolf Worries (at MAP 1) then increases MAP to stage 2.

No, the MAP doesn't affect the save DC that the victim creature rolls against.

If the Dire Wolf uses its 3rd action to Strike again, it will make the Strike at MAP stage 2. And then MAP won't increase because stage 2 is the maximum MAP stage. Considering that the Dire Wolf only has Grab, not Improved Grab, in an actual game, the Dire Wolf probably had to use an action to Grab and could only Worry with their 3rd action and would need a Haste effect to give them an action to Strike with. But the concepts regarding MAP still apply.

Similarly, if the Dire Wolf starts their turn with a creature grabbed from the previous round, they could Worry for their first action. Which would increase their MAP stage to stage 1 for the rest of their Attack actions during that turn.

Yeah, so? Don't overthink it

Besides, the only reason a Dire Wolf wouldn't use their turn if they begin with a grabbed victim with Worry, Worry, Grab to refresh is if they kill their victim. In that case the party probably needs any break they can get

Or they Worry, killing the target, and proceed to attack another one (with MAP).

If Worry didn't have the Attack trait, then it would be identical to Constrict and could be replaced with

Constrict ◆ 1d10 +2, DC 20

Much like what the Assassin Vine has.
