Crafting a Staff: Can my stick be a special stick

Rules Discussion

Little theory crafting question. I was looking at some of the staves rules mainly for a character for an upcoming Kingmaker campaign with my friends, when I came across the rules for making your own staff in Secrets of Magic. It looked pretty neat and as I looked it just says magic staves are also staff weapons and gives you a basic link for stats in case you want to bonk something. So my question is, there are a bunch of different types of staff weapons therefore can any one of them be used as a base for a magic staff. For example, a Bo Staff is a monk type staff weapon, could I take a Bo Staff and craft it in character to make a unique magic staff for say my current Monk character based on his Druid archetype? Or are all staves intended to be vanilla clubs?

No, they do not come in a variety of Weapon types but at the same time none of them are a vanilla club, they are all Specific Magic Weapons with the various Staff powers they have baked onto them with the Staff Weapon Statblock.

If you want to allow something else that probably isn't TOO wild I don't see why that would be a huge problem but that would 100% be homebrew territory even for something like personal/custom Staves which is in itself already basically optional rule homebrew in its own right.

Yes, the stats for a staff (magical item) are referencing specifically the one staff weapon.

For an example of something that references 'staff' and then defines a large set of weapons that it is including in its own ability, see Staff Acrobat Dedication.

That said - talk to your GM about either reflavoring the staff to look different than just a stick or to have the stats of a different weapon.

The "staff" part of a magic staff is probably not that important from the perspective adding the spells. In fact, Treasure Vault introduced coda instruments, which function pretty much the same as staffs except in musical instrument form for bards (and technically a battle lute can be made into a coda instrument to attack with and etch with weapon runes).

I agree that you should talk with your GM about using a bo staff, khakkara, or whipstaff as the physical base for your magical staff. Or even go with something even more different, such as cane pistol, frying pan, probing cane, etc., depending on the character and the theme behind the staff powers.

Thanks for the quick replies! I'm definitely looking within the current restrictions of the rules. My group is still fairly new to 2e (less than a year) so I definitely want to avoid homebrew if I can.
