This has all the hallmarks of a "wait six months" sort of death, but I'm hearing editorial comments that, no, this is one of those "Uncle Ben" / "Gwen Stacey" / "Mar-vell" deaths. If so, I think that's a shame.

Spoilers, you bet:
.Over the last year or two, Marvel has put a lot of effort into making Kamala Khan a character we should care about, with deep connections throughout the Marvel universe.

Scarab Sages

I’ve heard the speculation they’ll wait a few months (when the movie comes out), then probably resurrect her as a mutant. It would let them drum up some publicity for the film, and help tie in mutants to the MCU.

That's the idea. I'm personally still VERY, VERY VERY pissed off at having a MAJOR character that wasn't a major part of another character's cast, (Much less someone that had their own freaking book. TWICE!!) killed in this way.

Spidey Editorial has a lot to answer for.

"Resurrect her as a mutant"?

Man, I'm sorry these forums don't allow me, just this once, to post a big ol' "The Hell?" gif.

I didn't think that's how the Terragen Mists work. I must have been mistaken.

--

Someone else has pointed out that "disguising yourself as someone else, changing your skin tone and hair color, and changing the color of your clothes" is a novel application of Kamala's power set. So, it wasn't just writing bent to a bad end, but bad writing to boot.

--

Too bad there wasn't a character present, who had demonstrated healing powers earlier in the issue.

--

The bad guy wasn't shy about killing random people before. I'm surprised that killing the wrong person in this instance destroyed him.

It wouldn’t be the first time they pulled some crazy (perhaps idiotic) retcon of a character. Hell, up until a few years ago Franklin Richards had been a mutant for decades of publication. Then he wasn’t.

Still, at this point it’s just speculation. I also wish you could post that gif, however.

Yeah Chris I know it seems weird but consider this: Until recently Wanda wasn't a mutant but she managed to resurrect herself USING the same methods that are currently available to mutant kind. (Though some are feeling more worried after the Sinister debacle). So if Wanda, a non-mutant can resurrect herself AS a mutant (kind of!)... then the theory about Kamala doing something similar MIGHT be possible.

I know it's weird and wrong. But there you are.

Thomas, hasn't she been a mutant since her first appearance as a member of the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants?

the last I checked -- and for what that's worth -- she was a mutant who was trained by Agatha Harkness to also practice magical witchcraft, which she combined with her mutant probability-affecting hex power to good effect.

Even that was an outlandish explanation of her powers.

Chris,

No they retconned that some time ago. Like around AXIS. Since she's NOT the daughter of Magneto, genetically then therefore, she's not a mutant. Merely a pretender as it was something to do with the High Evolutionary screwing around.

Correction! Unncanny Avengers Volume 2 issue 4. My bad.

Ah. Here we are.. Missed that bit. Thanks.

Yep. That happened. Uncanny Avengers explained it.

Huh. Weird.

Yeah. It is.

and she's back

and sure enough she's a mutant now

Limited Series "Ms Marvel, the New Mutant" coming soon

It dose however open a interesting can of worms. Apparently they used the Krakoa tech to bring her back to life, and as a result she is now a mutant.

Now I don't know if this is just a quirk that happens when you run an inhuman through the resurrection pods or if the X-men can just turn people into Mutants now

but lets consider the later. How do you think the average anti-mutant bigot in the marvel world would react to learning they can just turn you into a mutant.

Grey,

Actually if you read the article, Iman Vellani states she is now BOTH. Not just a mutant but also an Inhuman. So...make of that as you will. I do think though the new team will acknowledge her Inhuman roots but not necessarily use that as a source of conflict as she joins the X-men.

Currently, after the actions of the Hellfire Gala, "joining the X-Men" is a little more challenging than it might have been.

Yeah. But at least she didn't die again. Plus she's BOTH. So there you go.
