Phrenic / Qi Adept Soldier build help

What it says on the tin! Just curious to get some help for a build, still newish to starfinder and there may be better ways to go about this, so any help is appreciated.

The build concept is essentially a space monk, combining the Qi Adept Soldier with the Phrenic Adept archetype. Taking all of the psychic power feats at the appropriate levels, as well as improved unarmed feat and the corresponding soldier gear boosts. Possibly a dip into shield solarian for augmented unarmed strikes. This isn’t an optimized build, but I’d like it to not be total trash either.

I’m not sure about the out of combat utility, except some of the psychic powers. Advice on this point would be particularly helpful, though I’m not sure how much out of combat utility soldiers have in general, haven’t really played the game a lot. Lots of theorycrafting.

Archetypes take away a lot from various classes, but the general consensus I've seen is that Soldiers are best able to absorb that loss, since (well, almost) all they lose are Bonus Feats. Bonus feats are great, of course, but you can still have a fully formed Soldier class concept, from everything else Soldier gives you, without combat feats. So - go to!

I'd suggest not taking the Psychic Power feats, simply because they're kinda bad. The spells they offer are neat and flavourful, sure, but not worth taking a Feat for, imo - especially since you're already getting some of those spells' functionality from the Archetype. If it's really important, you could instead take the Connection Inkling feat at lvl 5, which provides a lot of the same functionality, but takes only one feat? (Or if you'd rather have a higher Cha or Int as a backup stat, the appropriate feat for Witchwarpers or Technomancers, respectively.)

Lastly, if you want to have more out-of-combat options for a Soldier, check out the Special Ops Training alternate class feature from COM. Neat way to get some extra ooomph out of some skills!


Oh wow that’s a cool series of feats, didn’t know about those. I’ll take a look at that alternate feature too, just found the aesthetic and that fits the theme too, thanks for pointing that out.

I honestly like having the psychic feats, it’s a home game so I may be able to swap out powers for equivalent level powers. Since I’m unarmed focused, I don’t have a whole lot of feats I need. If that’s the case, are those feats worthwhile now? Or would you still use those feats for other things?
