Newb Staff Wizard

Pathfinder Society

So I'm a PFS newb trying to wade through all the rules related to my Nexus Staff.

My current working hypothesis is as follows:
.

1- I start at level 1 with my Makeshift Nexus Staff (that's pretty much a given, as it says so in the CRB).

2- At 2nd level, I can pay 38.5gp to have a +1 Potency Rune added to my staff (a common, standard availability item which I can pay The Society to affix for me).

3a- At 3rd level, I can craft my Makeshift Staff into a Staff of Air with a DC18 Crafting check and 60gp in materials after purchasing a 3gp formula from The Society (also, a common, standard availability item).
3b- I then pay The Society 3.5gp to transfer the Potency Rune to my Staff of Air.

4- At 4th level, I can pay 71.5gp to have a Striking Rune added to my staff.

5- From this point forward, I can upgrade my Staff of Air, Striking, and Potency Runes to higher level version by paying the difference in cost?

4/5 ****

1 person marked this as a favorite.

I think you've over complicated things.

2) I don't think there's anything stopping you from just paying 35gp to have the +1 rune etched into your staff. No need to buy a rune and transfer. Any upgrade you could theoretically craft yourself you can just pay for instead.

The Etching Process
You're paying extra for the transfer, just etch.

Can I upgrade permanent items?

Yes, players may upgrade permanent magical items or items made from special materials using the Crafting rules on page 535 of the Core Rulebook. Players may not upgrade adventuring gear or consumable items in this manner.

Can I pay the cost difference to upgrade a permanent item instead of using Craft to do it myself?

Yes. The Pathfinder Society has numerous crafters that assist their fellow agents. Use the rules for upgrading magic items on page 535 of the Core Rulebook.

Your staff is a permanent magical item. Therefor you can upgrade it by paying the cost.

3) (As mentioned in the above FAQ, you can purchase upgrades instead of crafting them yourself) So you could just pay 60gp to upgrade it into a staff of
Air.

Or you could purchase the formula and craft the upgrade yourself. (Upgrade and full cost would use 4 days of downtime, could reduce that cost by up to half through downtime days). Also it would upgrade the existing staff, no need to transfer the +1 rune. See Detailed Crafting Instructions if you want to learn more about crafting. (I do think Staff Nexus removes the need for the Magical Crafting Feat at least.)

4) At 4th level, once again you could buy the rune and then transfer it for that extra cost, or just pay the 65gp to upgrade the runes to +1 striking.

5) You can do this now, you could have done it the whole time.

P.S. I think the Staff Nexus is on the weak end of the Arcane Theses. Lots of cool flavor in having your own personal staff though, so don't let the optimization side of my brain discourage you too much.

K then, so 35gp + 60gp + 65gp = 155gp for a shiny +1 Striking Nexus Staff of Air...

Fine by me. :) Thanks.
