How exactly does Jet dash work ?

Rules Questions

Hey there! I'm kinda new to this system and I'm not really sure... How it should interpret the Jet dash feat.

Like... I understand Fe first part that give your the opportunity to run 6x your original speed and let you jump twice as high as usual.

But what confuses me it the second part of the feat.
Like:

You move four times your land speed and gain the flat-footed condition while running

Does that mean my character runs permanently 4x my original speed and do I always get flat-footed afterwards ?
Because the first part also says I do NOT get the Flat-footed condition while running ??

What you get, running-related (benefit): 6x speed, you're not flatfooted

What normally happens when running without this feat (normal): 4x speed, you're flatfooted

This benefit/normal format is rarely used when a feat changes a baseline rule (rather than adding something novel) and they choose to list the baseline rule to call out what the feat is doing for you. I wouldn't be surprised if the decision to do it is as about copyfit ("we need more words on this page, someone make a feat longer, we've already included too much flavor text that is going to confuse our dimmer or less sophisticated customers into thinking it's rules, let's try something else") more than anything else.

The second part is "normal" describing whats different for most people without the feat, reminding people how things normally work so you can easily see what the feat is doing for you.

Bob the shirren has a 30 foot movement. In combat he walks 30 feet and shoots the space dragon.

Speedy the ysoki has a 30 foot movement. In combat he walks 30 feet and shoots the space dragon.

The space dragon is now annoyed.

Bob the shirren Uses the run action. he does not have the jet dash feat. He moves 4 times his 30 foot movement in a straight line (120 feet) and is now flat footed when the space dragon comes after him to eat him.

Speedy the ysoki uses the run action. but thankfully he has the jet dash feat. He moves 6 times his 30 foot movement (180 feet away) and is not flat footed in case the dragon skips over bob to eat him.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Oooh ok! This makes so much nor Sense now!!
Thank you guys so much for the explanation!

I'm not a native English speaker so sometimes rules sound a little more confusing than they actually are!
But this really helped a lot! Thank you so so much for your time and efforts!! ;W ;

Something I discovered during my recent campaign: Jet Dash is more powerful than it seems. Especially when combined with the various other easily available ways to boost movement, it basically means enemy NPCs can *never* escape if the players don't wish them to escape. At least, not without some kind of much more extraordinary option than "Run away". The sheer amount of movement basically makes escaping pursuit impossible. Sure, if you are jet dashing you aren't attacking, but you now still have that dude right next to you ready to AoO if you continue fleeing.
