I’ve looked at the chase scene a few times now and the entries don’t make sense to me.

They have a column for # which I thought was zone number, a zone name, and then the effects.

The thing is the first always lists 1-3 for the number. The second entry is 2, 3, 1 or 2 depending on route.

What is the # column supposed to be?

It's confusing, but I think the intended reading would be better expressed by labeling the columns Zone, Hazard, and Effect. So, for each route, the PCs are presented with a hazard that they'll encounter in every zone* ("1-3"), and then an additional hazard they'll encounter in one zone.

* More specifically, Zone 1 in round 1, Zones 1-2 in round 2, and Zones 1-3 in round 3+.

To take the Beach Route for example, my read is that the PCs encounter sand dunes in zones 1-3, and in zone 2, they also encounter a flock.

But I dunno, I could be wrong.

Is it wrong that the first thing I checked was the size of the ball of twine in Darwin MN? Maybe the one in Kansas was lost during the Gap.

I think John's right. There is one effect for all zones and a special hazard in one of them (based on the route).
