Heightening spells question

Pathfinder Second Edition General Discussion

If you're a class that prepares spells (e.g wizard), do you have to buy higher level versions of a given spell to heighten it? Or do you just need the "base" spell?

1 person marked this as a favorite.

You can heighten freely if you know the base spell. The exception is only made for spontaneous casters, who have to learn the spell at each level unless it's a signature one.

To build and clarify on what Megistone said: a spontaneous caster would need to add the higher level version of the spell to their spell reprtoire (or else choose it as a signaturespell). They would not necessarily need to perform the Learn a Spell activity or seek out a scroll or mentor to teach them a spell they already have in their repertoire at a lower level. They would simply pick it at their ne level or retrain an existing spell to the new higher level spell.

Example: Bob's sorcerer has invisibility as a 2nd level spell. Bob could make it a signature spell, thus gaining the 4th-level spell option at 7th-level. But since another 2nd-level spell has his eye for that coveted "signature slot" he instead decides to take invisibility AGAIN at 7th-level. Now he can cast it as a 2nd-level spell or as a 4th-level spell, but since he didn't make it a signature spell, he cannot cast it at any other spell level.
