Sorry if this has been covered, but I could not find it. I understand how improved knockdown works, but had a questions about the standard knockdown feat (level 4).
If you miss with the first attack action in knockdown, it fails and it counts as 2 actions. My question is, does it count as 2 attacks for MAP purposes? Or would it only count as 1? You wouldn't get the opportunity to attempt the trip, so what would happen?

Standard knockdown doesn't have a "counts as two attack actions" line. It has two separate subordinate actions that are both attacks and both count towards MAP.
If you miss the Strike, the Trip subordinate action never happens. So there's no reason that you would have two attacks worth of MAP.
"Both attacks count toward your multiple attack penalty, but the penalty doesn’t increase until after you’ve made both of them" requires both attacks to happen, in order to be relevant.

What Hammerjack said.
"Both attacks" do X is an irrelevant sentence if there aren't two attacks. In fact, if that sentence did apply even when you didn't make both attacks, then technically the MAP wouldn't increase at all from the activity, as "the penalty doesn’t increase until after you’ve made both of them." and you never made the second one.
