Reputation and Held Chronicles

Prior to everything being tracked online, if I held a Chronicle from GMing, such as assigning a Tier 5-8 Chronicle to a Level 2 PC, I didn't receive either the Fame or Reputation until that Chronicle was applied.

But when I GM now, I have those AcP available immediately, regardless of whether the Chronicle I earned is being held until a higher level. I can even spend those AcP on Boons for that PC, even though previously, I couldn't do the same with Fame.

Are we to treat Reputation the same way?

I have a few lower level PCs who are now "Liked" by their Faction, and qualify for downloading Boons with that requirement, even though on paper their Reputation only adds up to being "Ignored".

I can't tell if this is intended, or if it's benefitting from a glitch. I would love for my Level 1 Grand Archive PC to download Off-Hours Study and start learning languages a level earlier than most PCs, but I don't want a math-savvy GM to raise their eyebrow and question how my 8 Reputation character qualified for a 20 Reputation Boon.

Shouldn't you just adjust the gold award from those chronicles down to the level of the character and apply them now? With item access being restricted until you reach the "legal" level of play? Since AcP, Prestige and XP does not scale with level, it would seem a better solution than to have mismatched/floating credits.

Oh when did that change? I've had held Chronicles for... probably over a year at this point.

My understanding is that you _may_ reduce the held chronicle to a level 1 one and apply as per usual pre-gen rules which GM chronicles follow. You can't downgrade to an arbitrary non-first level.

If you are holding the chronicle, then no you haven't applied it, so they wouldn't have the reputation yet and its simply a bug in Paizo's website that would let you buy the faction boon.

Is it confirmed to be a bug?

You don't get the Rep until you apply the sheet. The website just doesn't have anyway to tell.

Do people hold off on spending their AcP in the same way?

Apologies if this seems obvious to everyone else; I have zero concept of what makes sense and what's "too good to be true" anymore.

You gain The AcP immediately.
You gain the rep when you apply the sheet.

My understanding is that the fact that the web site cannot understand or record "hanging rep" qualifies as if not a bug, at very least a limitation of the system.

It is probably not intended that you buy boons whose Reputation thresholds the system only *thinks* you qualify for.

Ive only "held" module/AP GM credits from PFS2 so far, so I admit to not being overly familiar with the rule as it applies to scenarios. IMO GMs should be able to apply chronicles no matter what level they are to a PC of any level up to the max that could play the adventure. In fact, IMO, it should be mandatory to assign chronicles when they are reported and eliminate the idea of "hold" chronicles, but I know I am in the minority on that last part. Opening up the option to assign it to any character regardless of level should in theory significantly reduce the number of held chronicles. Because of the way wealth was done in 1E, this would have been a problem, but since wealth is very standardized in 2E, no reason not to do it and create more options for GMs. It certainly wouldn't discourage GMing, and if it encouraged it even a little bit, that's good for the community.

As far as restricting the "held" chronicle, I guess the solution would be to not report it until you actually apply the chronicle to the character. Then again, are those boons that require 'Liked' so good that we should be concerned that your character got one a little bit earlier than they should have? I know I'm not and wouldn't even blink if I happened to notice it on a character during a full audit. If you were holding back 10 levels worth of chronicles and your 1st level PC had boons that required 'Admired' I might be a bit more objective. This sounds like a glitch that's not worth a whole lotta headtime to correct.

Basically.

I actually suggested this. The concern was that there might be an unforeseen consequences to doing this, and if we did it, it would be almost impossible to undo it.

This situation recently came up "locally" (online) here. A player with "held" chronicle sheets from playing iconic pregens and GMing had enough reputation to be eligible for a boon even though the character would otherwise not qualify.

The player in question purchased the boon because the website allowed it, not knowing that it (probably) shouldn't be allowed until that boon came up in conversation.

The word "Reputation" appears 96 times in the Online Guide, but I can't find anything restricting what Boons you qualify for.

This is all I could find:

"Character rewards unlocked by Reputation are found on the Boon Tab of your My Organized Play page"

"The various factions make the following boons available to their agents who have earned the appropriate reputation level."

So if your Level 1 PC qualifies for Boons that require 20 Reputation, it sounds like nothing is stopping you from purchasing and using them.
