I'm reading up on book 1, and I see that at certain levels, the PC's signature trick grows and allows them to use different kinds of checks.
What's the purpose of this? Is this just flavor? I would assume that for the vast majority of cases, the PC would stick to their one check that they're good at.

Occasionally, the party will go over the amount of Excitement that they need for the show to be a critical success (Excitement = Anticipation). In that case, the performers may need to try for a critical failure on the Perform a Trick check and having additional skills presents a way to use a much worse skill so that their Excitement is lowered.
That may be an unintentional interaction however, and there are also random circumstances that may make certain checks preferable to others (Maybe in a town of physical laborers Athletics trick checks get a +2 bonus).
