I'm looking to purchase RotR Base, but I'm seeing that no mint editions are available (some of the expansions have mint/non-mint option); does this effect playability or is it merely the shades of the cards? Should I get all non-mint or would getting non-mint and mint mixed matter?

At least in the past, non-mint basically meant the box was damaged, but the cards were fine. See this for example.
I think you can ignore the info from back then about non-mint being all first printings. I would suspect that by now they might be second printings.
