Thinking about the recent "illusion of choice" kerfluffle. I wonder if real choice could be expanded fairly easily with a house rule. Let a player roll their key ability against DC 15 to perform an activity that normally requires a feat they haven't taken (but for which they qualify). Results depend on roll.

Crit Success: You perform the action as if you have taken the feat.
Success: You perform the action with a handicap (essentially clumsy, drained, enfeebled, or stupified)
Fail: You lose the number of actions the activity would normally consume.
Crit fail: Lose the actions and bust out the crit fumble deck for some amusement.

The success handicap could be a fixed value or if you're more tolerant of light math, it could be based on subtracting the DC from the roll:

Roll:15 = penalty: -5
Roll:16 = penalty: -4
Roll:17 = penalty: -3
Roll:18 = penalty: -2
Roll:19 = penalty: -1

Liberty's Edge

Could be a good use of a Hero Point too "gain a Feat you meet the prerequisites for" with say a minute duration for a Hero Point?

Alternatively, your system could take advantage of the simple DC by proficiency.
