High level features issue

Magus Class

Our level 19 capstone feature seems bad to the point where I'd ask the GM for it to not exist at all for my character potentially and just have no 19 feature at all.

It's basically weaker striking spell, but degree of success is worse. The problem is some save spells have *negative effects on critical fail*

So this is one of the only high level features I've seen where you can get a power decrease from.

Beyond that the ability itself, disregarding this wrinkle. Is so weak, I wouldn't even take it as a level 1 feat.

dont really understand this. What is the scenario where this isnt a straight up improvement on base Striking Spell?

I guess there’s some spells like Charm (though obviously not charm because delivering Charm with a weapon seems like a bad idea) where a crit success on their save is bad for you compared to just a regular success? They’re pretty rare though, and, IIRC, mostly social spells which you aren’t going to use Striking spell on anyway.

The heightened chance of critical failure on attack spells only matters for monsters that have reactions triggered off crit fail, which are few.

I agree it needs some work though, when I playtested it, it barely did anything. Out of 39 attacks made by the magus, double spellstrike was only applicable to 3 and only did anything on one of those 3. That.. isn’t great for a level 19 feature unless it’s supposed to be more of a ribbon feature like the fighter’s given they get their DC increase at that level.

There’s also the question of how it interacts with Whirlwind Spell. If I cast electric arc into whirlwind spell and hit two creatures, does the second creature get affected by only the initial electric arc or the initial and the double spellstrike arc? I ruled it to be only the initial as the wording seemed to imply the spell was discharged once and affected every creature you hit, but you could also interpret it as being discharged once on every creature hit, in which case double spellstrike would apply to each hit beyond the first.
