Are there exceptions for Safeguarded Spell?

The Safeguarded Spell sorcerer feat (APG 139) says the following: You bring the magical wavelengths of your spell into sync with the ones produced by your own body. If the next action you take is to Cast a Spell with an area, you aren't affected by the spell even if you are within the area.

It's pretty straight-forward when using energy-based attack spells that directly effect creatures, such as fireball (the fire doesn't burn you), or spells that bring things into being, such as black tentacles (the tentacles simply ignore you), but how does this work with more "physical" environmental spells that don't directly effect creatures? Spells like transmute rock and mud or darkness for example.

Do you not sink into the mud? Does the stone not trap you? Or are you effected despite the metamagic feat?

In the case of darkness, do you just ignore the lower illumination level?

Here's a rough list of some of the area spells in the game. Many would seem to interact with this feat in some really odd ways.
