I sent an email about this a few days back, but thought it might get better attention here:
I know that subscription customers get a PDF as soon as a book ships; is there any way for preorder customers to get this benefit if they aren't subscribers? Since you folks don't do preorders on pdfs, I don't see any obvious way, even if you are willing to also preorder the physical book.

There isn’t any way to do that. Paizo received pushback early from brick and mortar stores for releasing PDFs early to subscribers. If they were to do so for everyone, it would be worse.
Note that you can subscribe-then-cancel. So if you are ever going to preorder a PDF and preorder the print copy, you should instead just subscribe for that book and then cancel once it has shipped.
You’ll get the PDF when your subscription copy ships (usually early, although not always).
This will also be cheaper, since the PDF is free.
The main downside of buying through Paizo direct (imo) is high freight costs, since they don’t subsidise shipping and handling costs.

I'd thought of that. It seemed...cheesy, but if that's the only way...
Paizo have explicitly and repeatedly said they’re fine with it. So don’t feel you’re taking advantage or anything. :)
Their subscription model is not intended to be binding for more than one purchase. It helps them anticipate demand (since often we do remain subscribed) and no doubt the increased margin from a direct sale is good for them too.
At this stage, you have to have CS involvement to cancel - via email, forum post or phonecall (currently unavailable due to COVID). So once the item has shipped and you’ve got your PDF, make sure to cancel quickly - the current backlog means it can take a few weeks for that cancellation process to trickle through the system.
This is also problematic in months where there are two releases in the same product line. The default will be that you get both, but if that looks like it’s going to happen, CS can sort that for you too.
There are plans to give customers more control, over cancelling subs, but it’s not currently possible.
